DESCRIPTION

Inspired by program based principles, instructors are now designing fully integrated sequences of learning modules linked to learning outcomes were students are expected to post artefacts and associated reflexive comments. We show how this kind of learning environment can be implemented in Sakai 2.6 and hopefully Sakai 3.0 by adapting and extending the OpenSyllabus structured approach.

Context of the session

• MATI Montréal is a research center for HEC Montréal, École polytechnique and University of Montréal

• Started a strategic initiative on portfolios • After reviewing the needs and after discussing

with the community, we choose to concentrate on structured-guided-evaluation-semantic portfolios (vs free form or expressive portfolios)

Context of the session

• Related to many Sakai 2010 presentations:• Reporting (Monday, Lyn Ward)• Rubrics (Tuesday, Implementing the AAC&U

Rubrics, S. Keesler)• Sakai 3• Etc.

Outline

• Three use cases• Setting learning outcomes in a business school

program design• Communication workshop for engineers• Sequences of learning activities for health

practitioners • Possible extension of Open Syllabus as a

structured portfolio editor • List of requirements + Sakai 3 ideas + road-map

Use case # 1 : adding learning outcomes

• HEC Montréal has to comply to an accreditation process

• Will eventually need to collect the evidence• The most pressing need is to define learning

outcomes at the course level and make sure that the overall picture is right

• Currently using Open Syllabus

Use case #2 – Communication workshop

• Generic sequence• Workshop designed by the instructor – include

learning outcomes• Students submit an artefact with some comments• Tutors evaluate or grade the artefact• Students must post a comment about their

evaluation• Looks like OSP … but the engineering school is

using Moodle. Need someting along Web 2.0 tool

Use case #3 : learning sequences

• Joint project involving :• School of Medecine - CPASS center• BENA – Teaching-Learning-Technology group• CRIM• MATI Montréal

• Proof of concept in Sakai 3

Key building blocks and gaps to close

1. Organized content with learning outcomes library

2. Task manager linked to learning outcomes3. Forms (guidance, evaluation)4. Work-flow 5. Reflexive comments6. Standards (LEAP2A)

Road-map and questions

• Mock-up of the use cases available at the end of the summer

• Generalize Open Syllabus to a generic object editor and a Open Social Gadget to be included in Sakai 3(September). Blocks #1, #2 and #3

• Work-flow # 4 with Open Scenario Team (Savoie)• Leverage the work in Sakai 3 for the reflexive
