Welcome back from the Holidays! I hope your children are excited and

ready to accomplish their goals for this semester. We continue to work

hard to make TES the best learning environment possible.

We are very excited about the future and all of the upcoming possibilities!

The new building construction will begin this year on Hwy. 44 East, Little

Mt. Road, just outside of Taylorsville. Our goal will be to open in our new

school location in August, 2017!

Let’s make it a GREAT 2016 for TES!

Induction The Taylorsville Elementary and Spender Co. Elementary joint Jr. Be-

ta Club induction will be held on Thursday, January 28th, 6;30 pm in

the Spencer Co. Middle School Auditorium. If you have any ques-

tions, please contact Crystal Little or Janet Allen.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

In December classroom visits, we concen-trated on career/social skills, and making good decisions. January lessons have moved more into specific lessons about using our manners, show-ing empathy, and using self-control to get along with others. This February I will be wrapping up with final visits to the primary classrooms, and begin the set up for small group lessons. These small groups will be for students that may need additional help in areas such as: anger, dealing with divorce, coping with loss, social skills, etc. I will let you know if your child has been referred by their teacher to join one of these groups. If you would like to request that your own child be included in a group for help in a certain area, please let me know by sending a note addressed to me, through your homeroom teacher or the office. You can also e-mail me at hei-di.heiss@spencer.kyschools.us or call the school 477-3339 (ext.3240).

The December Family FLIP Night had a fabulous turnout!!! We loved seeing all the fami-lies engaged with their children’s projects, and learning about available programs to support them. This was also the night that students could be registered for next year’s Kindergarten class. We will have another week of registration in the spring. We look forward to seeing these future students at our school events between now and the start of next year. If you haven’t yet regis-tered your future Kindergarteners for coming to school next year, please make sure you contact our front office ASAP. You don’t have to turn in all the paperwork right away, just getting the basic information in our records is very im-portant.

Nurse Jackie’s Healthy Habits

February is Dental Health Month.

Our teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and our tooth enam-

el is the hardest part of our body—even harder than our

bones! In order to keep our teeth for a lifetime, we need to

take care of them by brushing, flossing and seeing the

dentist.

Brush 2 x a day for

2 minutes

Dental floss can do a much

better job of removing food

from between your teeth than

a toothbrush alone can do.

So, don’t forget the floss!

One of the worst things to

drink for the health of your

teeth is sugary drinks! Yes,

Mountain Dew, Pepsi, fruit juices are loaded with sugar. To

understand the damage keep reading:

Your teeth and gums are covered by a sticky layer of bacteria

better known as “plaque.” Bacteria feed off sugar, which is

plentiful in a can of soda. When bacteria come into contact

with soda in the mouth, they start metabolizing the sugar and

create acids as byproducts. These acids attack the tooth

structure and enamel for at least 20 minutes, increasing your

risk of tooth decay. Every time you take a sip of soda, this 20-

minute acid attack starts over. Teenagers and children are

especially vulnerable to the tooth decay caused by soda be-

cause their enamel is not yet fully developed.

Most sodas also contain phosphoric acid

and citric acid, which are both highly dam-

aging to your teeth. Acids can soften the

enamel on the teeth, increasing the risk of

cavities and tooth decay. Although drinking

diet soda solves the problem of exposing

your teeth to the damaging effects of sugar,

diet sodas are still acidic, so they are not a

safe choice.

So, what can you drink for better oral

health? Water, milk or have a piece of fresh fruit.

Remember…. Brush, floss and see your dentist regularly.
