Our Guild
P A G E 2
The Lone Star Leather Crafters Guild was established in Fort
Worth, Texas in 1986 by a small group of leather enthusiasts.
Today, our Guild has grown into an international organization with members in the
United States, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden and The
Netherlands. Our skill levels range from novice to master, hobbyist to professional,
with all members willing to share their ideas and skills with other leather enthusiasts.
If you are interested in learning more about our Guild, we invite you to visit a
monthly meeting which is held on the second Tuesday of the month. Membership in
the Guild is $20 for a single membership, $30 for a family membership, or a one-
time $150 for a lifetime membership (U.S. funds). Dues are payable in January.
All submissions for the Newsletter should be submitted to the address or e-mail to
your left. Submissions must be accompanied by the name and address of writer and
are subject to editing for clarity and/or length. The deadline for submission is the
25th of the month prior to publication.

During the sale of Ken Neal’s tools, the question came up about how to remove rust from older tools. Rick Ellenberger had the solution. Put 2 table spoons of Cream of Tar-Tar into water and bring it to a
boil. Drop the rusty tools into the water for about 5 minutes, then remove them. Dry them thoroughly and
they are ready to go.
I guess we should throw in a caution here, just in case. So here ya go ….
CAUTION # 1 - WATER THAT HAS BEEN BOILING FOR 5 MINUTES IT IS HOT. DON’T STICK YOUR FINGERS
IN IT! USE SOME SORT OF THONGS TO REMOVE THE TOOLS.
CAUTION # 2 - THE TOOLS WILL BE HOT TOO!! LET ‘EM COOL BEFORE YOU USE THEM.

WOW!!
A special "THANK YOU" to all the Lone Star Members and Friends
who helped make the Ken Neal Tool Collection Sale such a success.
You should have seen the smiles on the faces of David Smith and
George Hurst on the days that they did the inventory of my
Husband's Leather Tools.
They were like Kids in Tool Land!
No one would have believed that Ken had such a Collection.
I am truly amazed and very appreciative of the Love and Support
shown to my Family and to myself now and during Ken's illness.
I know you miss him, and his wonderful sense of Humor.
I am glad that his Tools are with his good friends.
Please continue to keep me in your prayers.
Thank you again,
Linda Neal
As you know, we had a special sale of the tools and goods from Ken
Neal’s collection at Hide Crafters the two Saturdays before we left for Indy. Your response was tremendous and overwhelming. I am happy to
say that because of your purchases and the sales at the Indy Show, we exceeded any and all expectations. We received the following letter from Ken’s Wife Linda. To this, I’d like to add my personal thanks to each
one of you.

Each year The Log Cabin Village has their Harvest Homecoming and Lone
Star was invited to participate. Due to the IFOLG Show in Indy being the
same weekend, we had to split our resources but were well represented in
both places. Cartie, Pat, Jo, Marlon, Mitzi, and Dezi did a fantastic job on
behalf of the Guild.

Karnes, some of us got a special tour of the Indianapolis Motor
Speedway. Jane Hurst, Randy Gustafson, Kathy Flanagan, and Dave Smith got to visit the tower
called the Pagoda and the “Yard of Bricks” on the starting line. A real
thrill for yours truly.
Recognize this logo? Yep, that’s King

due to the weather they weren’t out.

The internet is a great thing. I just received an email from our friend Rene Berends, so I thought I’d include
it. I also included a couple of pictures of his beautiful daughter. Rene, keep your shotgun loaded pardner.
You’re going to need in about 14 years.
Hello Dave and Guild members,
Long time no see or hear. What can I say but SORRY !!!!!!!!
Here are some photos of my daughter Bianca, the youngest lady leatherworker and she sure has got the hang of
it. She is two years and two months now. Time just flies. She is tri-lingual, sings in German, Dutch and English.
We do everything singing and I can spend a lot of time with her. Still busy teaching in Germany and Austria, also
to a lot of younger people ( t een-agers ) . Made some nice new projects. There is a lot of interest in Austria.
Hope all is well over there.
Big HUGS, René

FROM THE PRESIDENT
I’m going to spare you a boring President’s Letter this month in
favor of more space devoted to the IFOLG Show in Indy. My hardy
congratulations to everyone the had an entry at Indy. Even if you didn’t win a ribbon or trophy, you are a winner for having competed
at the show. That says that you want to learn and expand your
expertise by allowing your work be scrutinized by your peers in the
craft. None of us should ever want to stop learning because we will
never know it all. While we were registering the contest items, I was
so very proud of every entry that I saw. No matter what the item was, it was a piece of you and an expression of your passion for the
craft. As I see people take their first few cuts with a swivel knife or
the first few strikes of a tool on a piece of leather, I always wonder
where it will lead for them. Will be a passing fancy or become a true
passion for them? We never know and only time will tell. I do know that if we continue to reach out to others with our craft, we will find
more and more people that have the passion for leathercraft.
Keep on Toolin, Dave

This hot box made by Lone Star Member Marcelo Dario of San
Palo Brazil created quite a stir. It won First Place in it’s
category. It won Best in Category, AND Best in Masters. It
Marcelo and Alessandra with the Best of Category and Best of Masters Trophy.
Marcelo isn’t the only one in the family that can tool. Pictured on the right are
Lone Star member Tim Kleffner of Corpus Christi Texas also won a First Place (Blue Ribbon) in Advanced for his Chinks. Tim also won a best in
Category (Black Ribbon).
George Hurst’s Hollywood Gun Rig won a Second Place in Masters. He was bested by Marcelo’s hat
box. George is not going to let us forget that Marcelo was one of his students. Actually that’s one of
the greatest rewards for a teacher.
Right George?

Lone Star Member Arihiro Inada of Japan was very kind and sent us this
money clip for the guild display. When we opened the box we all had the
same reaction. This ain’t going on no display. It’s going into competition. He won First Place in his Advanced category and Best in Category. We
took some extra pictures so you could see some of the detail work on this
piece. Unbelievable!

Category trophy.

George Hurst Winner of the International Federation of Leather Guilds
Hall of Fame Award
One of the true highlights of the Indy show was seeing
George Hurst presented with the IFoLG Hall of Fame Award. He is only the eight person to receive this award. George has also received the IFoLG Life Time Achievement Ward and the Al Stohlman Award. As far as we can determine, George is the only person to have won all three of these awards.
In order to receive this award, a person has to nominated and that nomination be presented to a review board for evaluation. The nomination is then sent to all the guilds to be voted on by the president of each guild. A majority vote is required. It’s not easy to even qualify for this award much less pass the review and votes. I was fortunate enough to be sitting beside George when the award was announced and if you can believe it, George was stunned and truly speechless. Yes, George, speechless. A well deserved award to a fantastic person.
It is said that behind every good man is a good woman. That woman is Jane Hurst. Congratulations to Jane for putting up with George.
