Leave No Trace: Leaf Knife
The Leave No Trace: Leaf Knife is a camping knife
designed to reflect the cultural and ecological
values of the camping enthusiast. With the majority
of camping knives on the market designed with
violent aesthetics and impossible to disassemble
bodies, we put the consumer at the heart of our
practice to design a knife and product-service
system that is safe for both the users and
the environment.
With only two materials the knife is designed to
be easily disassembled. Whether it be personal
maintenance, part replacement, or end of life
recycling, everything is straightforward and visible.
Our product service system offers users options
for care and equipment while keeping all materials
moving through the technological sphere.

PRODUCT MANUFACTURER
The Leaf Knife is the first product offering
of Leave No Trace, a camping gear company
designed for the Circular Economy. We offer safe,
reliable, and regionally specific gear you can keep
for a lifetime. Our company utilizes a product-
service-system in tandem with simple and easy to
use tools and guides for at-home repair.
For minor repairs and maintenance, users will
receive a kit of parts for at-home fixing. You can
also opt to replace the whole product if you were
to, say, break your knife in an epic bear fight.
When your product reaches the end of its life, we
send you a box to return it in and we reclaim the
materials for reuse in future products.

Material Overview
The Leaf Knife is made from recycled steel and
aluminum. The blade itself is recycled tool steel.
The fasteners and spring-back are recycled mild
steel. The handle is made from recycled aluminum
that is anodized for color.
A quick disassembly using only a screwdriver
allows for this minimal knife to be easily recycled.
Steel and aluminum are two of the most widely
recycled materials because of ease and value.
The knife can be infinitely recycled at any
municipal recycling or scrap yard.
Material Reutilization
Material Health
All materials used are biologically inert. For color,
anodizing aluminum is a safe and chemically
contained process used on early iPods.

Autodesk Use
We used Autodesk Fusion from start to finish
of our project. From early prototypes through
to the development of the current iteration. The
straightforward feature tree and live view features
unique to Fusion enabled us to iterate and
collaborate freely, even when working remotely.
Designing Cradle to Cradle products involves
input from a wide range of experts. Fusion’s
collaboration and sharing features empowered
our team to quickly and intelligently adapt to
problems and expert feedback along the way.
