learners, including modeling, contingency managing, feedback, instructing, questioning,

It all starts with gathering information about your student(s).

The most basic tool to do this is observing.

Why observing? To get to know your student(s).

Level of development Character Talent Social behaviour Intelligent etc…

To become aware of the development of your student(s)

To adjust your actions/behaviour as a teacher.

Observing. The only thing you can observe is observable behaviour

within a specific environment .

Describe this behaviour in an objective way. (avoid prejudices)

After observing try to describe the behaviour. Again as objective as possible.

Think of questions you could ask in order to explain that behaviour.

Try to indentify the need that was the drive behind the behaviour.

Workgroup assignment

Prepare a short individual vocal/instrumental lesson:

Make use of the following instruction forms: show-imitate show-join Verbal – non verbal instruction By asking questions By giving feedback.

Make a list with things you can observe in a lesson.

Give the lesson to a peer.

Discuss the lesson (use the observing criteria you made)

Select 2 point of attention based on the feedback you get.

Work placement assignment

Observe three lessons of three pupils (9 lessons in total for this assignment) and observe these lessons using the three observation methods (unstructured, semi-structured and structured).
