Environmental Awareness

Page 7: lecture on envi awareness
Page 8: lecture on envi awareness

Let us define awareness…• Awareness is the state or ability to perceive,

to feel, or to be conscious of events, objects or sensory patterns. In this level of consciousness, sense data can be confirmed by an observer without necessarily implying understanding (http://en.wikipedia.org, retrieved on August 28, 2011).

Page 9: lecture on envi awareness
Page 10: lecture on envi awareness

Environmentalism (Awareness + Action)

• Developing concerns for environmental conservation and improvement of the health of the environment.

Page 13: lecture on envi awareness

Awareness should be…• Cognitive reaction to a condition or event

Page 14: lecture on envi awareness

Environmental Literacy• Environmental literacy is a difficult concept to

define.• Environmental literacy goes on to say that in

addition to the ability to read and calculate (literacy and numeracy--both indoor activities of education), intimate knowledge of our landscapes, and an affinity for the living world is included.– i.e. thermal inversion

Page 15: lecture on envi awareness

Environmental Literacy

• It present the environmental issues in terms of systems and in an interdisciplinary fashion.

• Students should be taught how to ask three questions that include "what can happen," "what are the odds," and “what can we do."

Page 16: lecture on envi awareness
Page 17: lecture on envi awareness

Environmental Literacy

• “Environmentally literate" students will have the knowledge, tools, and sensitivity to properly address an environmental problem in their capacity, and to routinely include the environment as one of the considerations in their work and daily living.

Page 18: lecture on envi awareness

How can we induce Environmental Literacy to our students?

• Integrated as part of the curriculum (i.e Environmental Science as elective subject)

• Improve our students ecological vocabulary.• Networking (link with research institutes)• Develop a research culture through a

comprehensive research program.

The PSHS Research Program• And God said,

• “Those ungrateful humans! They want to • know more? I’ll give them more.”

Then God created STR (Science and Technology Research)

• as punishment • for eating the fruit of knowledge…

• Pity the Pisay scholars,

• those who suffer• the punishment of mankind…

The PSHS Research Program

"The Philippine Science High School Scholar, nurtured by competent faculty and staff,

has a scientific mind and a passion for excellence, is dedicated to the service of the

country, and committed to the pursuit of truth."

Page 22: lecture on envi awareness

PSHS Research Program• The PSHS Research Program aims

to enhance the students' critical thinking and communication skills while instilling the value of discipline and patience in doing scientific research.

Page 23: lecture on envi awareness

PSHS Research Program• The program starts with a one-unit course in the third

year (STR1) which covers training in basic research skills such as information search, topic generation, and scientific writing. The third year curriculum's main output is a full research proposal.

• In the fourth year level, the students are expected to implement the proposal and write the scientific paper for the project. Also a one-unit course, STR2 includes requiring the students to participate in the annual Research competition held as a culminating activity of the program.
