LEC is a member of the Confederation for Lighting and the French Association for Lighting (AFE).

In 1977, when Pierre VALANCOGNE, a road sign engineer, saw the first

light emitting diodes (LED) appear on the market, he immediately realized

how useful they would be in his profession: combining a remarkable

reliability and low energy consumption, they virtually make maintenance

and operating budgets obsolete.

Consequently, he developed his first LED system and started up LEC Lyon,

a company fully dedicated to the development of LED marker-lightings.

Many well-known specifiers - including the City of Paris - were quickly

seduced by the product characteristics and adopted it to give an original

look to prominent constructions such as the main courtyard of the Palais

Royal, the Place Vendôme, the Esplanade des Invalides and many more.

For the last 30 years, LEC has constantly worked on developing this

technology and created a range of products with high added value. Since

the creation of the ARACOLOR® system in 2002, LEC is providing lighting

designers with dynamic lighting solutions offering a wealth of possibilities.

Today at LEC, the latest generation of LEDs is used in a range of compact,

powerful and reliable spotlights specially conceived for accentuation and

dynamic lighting applications.

LEC' s know-how reveals itself by a close and permanent cooperation with

the project designers to answer all their safety-marking and decorative

lighting needs.

Today, “LEC” remains a generic term when referring to LED marker-lightings.

Since the 1960s, research in theLEDs substrates have greatlyimproved their light emitting effi-ciency. The latest developments inLEDs have produced a new gene-ration of high power diodes(Superwatt), allowing to widentheir scope of application wellbeyond marker-l ighting intoaccentuating, dynamic or safetylighting applications.

Soon, the many improvements inthese semiconductors physicalqualities will increase their fields of applications and thus theirpopularity.

Here again, the technologicalevolution gives ultimate freedomto the designers. The first genera-tion LEDs were only available inred and could essentially only beused as indicating lamps, todayhowever, the choice in colours has widened and LEDs are nowavailable in blue, green and (warmor cold) white.

When combining 3 diodes (red +green + blue) into one capsule andblending these three fundamentalcolours together, manufacturerscan obtain around sixteen millioncolours, which allows a solutionto very precise graphical charts.

LEC aims to act in compliance withall environmental requirementsand has developed an eco-conceptapproach to reduce its manufactu-ring impact on the environment.

The Light Emitting Diode offersconsiderable advantages in therespect of the environment, withlow power installations contributingto reduce the global energy

consumption. Thanks to its remar-kable longevity of up to 100 000working hours, the LED contributesto reducing maintenance costsand waste quantity. Less energy

consuming and always more effi-cient, LEDs will clearly be at theheart of tomorrows lighting inno-vations.

New generation LEDs are nowremarkably long lasting. Some tests also proved that LEDperformance is variable depen-ding on colour.

However, even after thousands ofworking hours, most LEDs will stillhave kept around 80 % of theiroriginal brightness.Thanks to these exceptional characteristics, maintenance operations are reduced or evenmade obsolete on a very long run.A great advantage when it comesto accessing hard-to-reach loca-tions or realizing maintenanceoperations in installations such astunnels, roads, car parks, ...)which would otherwise need tobe shut down.

In 2002, LEC obtained its firstISO 9001 version 2000 certificate,clearly making customer satisfactiona priority. Since then, the certificatehas been subjected to recurrentaudits with a triennial renewalobtained in July 2005.

LEC is also planning to implementan environmental managementsystem based on ISO 14001 certificate.

The new range of LEC's LED-basedspotlights stands at the forefrontof technology: conceived for thearchitectural accentuation of abuilding or to offer dynamic lightexperiences, they are equipped

with an electronic colour controland a cooling system to guaranteelongevity.Appealing lighting effects are obtai-ned with a simple monochromespotlight or a more sophisticated

Even if the LED has not yet replacedthe most frequently used lightsources in urban applications, ithas however created a revolutionin the lighting world by introdu-cing it to the diversity of dynamiclighting applications.

Everywhere in the world, engineersare working on improving the"trichromical" LEDs. These threefundamentals (green, red and blue)are blended to such a level ofhomogeneity that today, it is possible to obtain all the coloursof the rainbow just by controllingthe intensity in each one of thesethree fundamentals.

ARACOLOR® dynamic colourcontrol system is a new tool tohelp lighting designers conveyemotions and fill the urban spaceswith light to positively change ourperception of cities at night.

In case of ground-recessed applica-tions, a simple cabling and a perfectwater-tightness are key-qualities tolong-lasting working operations.Keeping in mind simplicity andquality of installations, LEC hastherefore developed the ARAPILOT®

technology. The luminaires are fitted with a non-polarized 2-wirecable for a parallel connection, to

cancel any risk of connection error.The colour control informationcontained in the luminaires travel onthe supply cable “carrier current”. Each luminaire is equipped with acolour control card that reads thereceived information and providesthe LEDs in various intensity andcolours.

ARALOG® is a software for theprogramming of lighting choreo-graphies. The animation of singleor group of luminaires is based onpre-defined scenarios. These scenarios can be activatedthrough a clock, a cell phone orany colour control system compa-tible with DMX.

Together with EDP and SIGNE, the architectsBrochet, Lajus & Pueyo, wanted to mark thestreetcar path of the urban conglomeration ofBordeaux with a strong safety-lighting signal byintegrating light bars of specific conception alongthe line.

Placed perpendicularly to the rails, these light-barsanswer very precise requirement specificationsand take advantage of all the LEDs characteristics:quality and adapted brightness, easy installationand maintenance and long-lasting life… in the respect of the public request for tenders obli-gations.

Originally conceived as safety marker-lighting,these LED light-bars soon became a sign of identity.

A unique safety lighting brand, they contribute to give the new streetcar line its own identity,illuminating the path of millions of night-timestrollers.

Led by the agency Les Eclairagistes Associés,LEC has developed an innovating lightingdevice covering part of the 3.5 hectares of theJaude Place: the main area of Place Centrale deClermont-Ferrand (France) is now home to 250 LED ground recessed luminaires simulatingthe movement of lava in fusion.

Composed of delicate yellow and red lightdrops, each autonomous lighting flickers intothe basalt floor to create evolving ambiencesand to suggest the nearby volcanic territory.

A technical performance issued from a close-collaboration between the lightingdesigners and LEC engineers, the lighting ofthe Jaude Square is a realisation of telluricinspiration, the expression of an idea and atechnological innovation to further theidentity of a unique site.

For her International Time Zone Clock projectat the Millennium Square in Coventry, theBelgian artist Françoise SCHEIN chose LEC toensure that the scale and the originality ofher project would be respected.

The conception of floor recessed cast aluminium time zone bars encrusted withLED-lights was both a technological and anaesthetic challenge.

LEC went on to schedule a precise programme and collaborated with variousactors on a gigantic construction site, alwaystaking into consideration the variousconstraints of integration and the legitimatecolour rendering requirements.

Since 2004, this artist dream has permittedto simultaneously read the time of the 26towns twinned to Coventry... this symbolisesthe artist implication in the human rights,the city's actual dynamics and her dream ofa future full of imagination, innovation andpoetry.

The “Time Zone Clock” expresses a political point of view of the relationship between time and space.”Françoise Schein


“To escape the traditional frame of painting, by simulating painting”,was the original bright intention of French artist Daniel Tillier, whichturned into reality in collaboration with the designer Frederic duChayla and LEC, under the shape of floating lighting objects...

Equipped with electroluminescent lights, these floating colour dropsrecreate a bright multicolour work of art, strolling into the wavesand the waters reflection. A real invitation to travel, this installationwas first introduced to a public in 2002 during the "Fête desLumières" in Lyon, where they could be seen floating on the Saoneriverbed.

In 2004, they were subsequently staged as a static representationin the ponds of the botanic gardens of the Parc de la Tête d’Or inLyon. This time, LEC suggested to equip them with high-power(1W), “SUPERWATT” LED for more brightness.

Daniel Tillier's work of art has travelled lately to a new destination,since the City of Lyon and LEC offered it to the City of Canton,where they navigate today in the Yu Tai gardens, at the heart of theChinese City.

If LEC technological knowledge is fully expressed with specific projects, standards product ranges are alsobroadening to create always more audacious realisations. Todays prototype is tomorrow standard and vice-versa, the adaptation of a product or the deflection of itsusage opens the door to creativity... the actors of the light get their creativity out of such an exchange.
