How Close Are We to a 100% Clean Energy Economy?

 The prospect of driving home in an electric, self­driving car to a house powered by solar energy

may seem like an unrealistic daydream, but trends in the industry suggest that this may not be

the case.  Smart cities, renewable energy­powered homes, electric and self­driving cars are all

technologies that exist today, but they are just distributed and not ready to scale.  However,

clean energy technologies are attracting significant investment ­ $310 billion in 2014 – and

organizations continue to demonstrate their commitment to a clean energy economy with

investment in LED lighting, solar, wind, and more. 

 This month we feature articles, like creating a data center heat recovery system, that remind

us that small investments into energy conservation made locally have tremendous impact on

our country’s effort to move beyond fossil fuels.

Data center heat recovery is an attractive option for data centers of all sizesbecause it transforms the data center from an energy consumer into an energyproducer. 

Data center customers today care about energy efficiency and minimizing the environmentalimpact of their data center operations.  There are various ways to maximize the efficiency of adata center design with efficient cooling technologies,economizer strategies (i.e. “freecooling”), high voltage power distribution, and much more.  However, some customers arelooking to go beyond efficient design practices inside their data center and inquire about theability of reusing data center waste heat for other purposes in their facility.

Musco Lighting and Eaton’s Ephesus Lighting each have announced new high­profile, sports­venue, LED­based lighting projects that came to light with the dawnof the 2016 Major League Baseball season. Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres in San Diego, CA, has the new Musco Lighting installation. Globe Life Park,home of the Texas Rangers in Arlington, TX, has the new Ephesus Lighting installation. In both cases,the solid­state lighting (SSL) has raised light levels andslashed energy usage while DMX­based controls enable the teams’ production crews to generate special effects for the fans.

No, PUE is not dead. It’s alive and well, and the fact that an ASHRAE committee backed away from using a version of PUE in the new data center efficiency

standard that’s currently in the works hasn’t changed that.
