New online directoryfor jobseekersThe Directory of Employment Agencies in Leedsis published by Leeds library and informationservice as part of our service to jobseekers. Wealso offer work clubs and one-to-one advicesessions with qualified staff.

The directory contains details for over 230agencies, categorised by the areas ofrecruitment they specialise in. A new edition hasjust been published.

It’s an exciting time at Middleton leisure centre; amajor refurbishment is about to get underway. InApril 2012 the centre will temporarily close whilewe improve facilities for the local community.Work includes:

• replacing the current outdoor pitch with a brand-new 3G all-weather pitch;

• building a multi-use games area which will be freeto use;

• making the current bar area into a communityclub room;

• building two referees’ changing rooms;

• refurbishing eight internal changing rooms;

• creating a Changing Places standard disabledchanging room;

• upgrading six outdoor pitches;

• creating a new access route to the playing fieldsvia the rugby club;

• resurfacing the car park and creating disabled bays; and

• creating a new entrance and reception area(subject to funding from Sport England).

The centre is due to reopen in autumn 2012. Untilthen you can make the most of the facilities atother near-by leisure centres; John Charles Centrefor Sport, Morley and Rothwell.

Leeds' very own outdoor ice rink, the Ice Cube,returns to Millennium Square in January. This year, aswell as a smaller, family-friendly ice skating andnursery rink there are some exciting new attractionsto try. exhibition to be judged for the fifth

annual Northern Art Prize. It’s at Leeds

Art Gallery from 25 November 2011 until

The winner of the 2011/12 Northern Art

Prize will be chosen by a panel of experts

Performance in LeedsAbbey House Museum is celebrating the glory of sporting

success and the bright lights of the stage in its new exhibition

for 2012, Performance: Pitch, Platform and Podium. Exhibits

Punch and Judy puppets, souvenirs of the Leeds Festival and a

David Hockney poster for the 1972 Olympic Games. This

the fashion and furnishings styles that

dominated in the Victorian period from 1837

to 1901. From gothic to aesthetic, exotic to

Welcome to the Silver 70s

Gary Hume, one of the most vital

and interesting artists of his generation, is the

latest focus of the Arts Council Collection’s ‘Flashback’series. He’s the third artist they’ve featured, following on

from Bridget Riley and Anish Kapoor. Opening at Leeds

Art Gallery, Gary Hume: Flashback will revisit the

artist’s earlier pieces, using them as a starting point for

reflection on his wider, subsequent work. The exhibition

will include paintings and sculptures by the artist.

This free exhibition opens on 3 February until 15 April

Having started playing wheelchair basketball aged six, and inspired by hisidol Michael Jordan, Nick has gone on to play for the successful LeedsSpiders team. He was highly commended at the 2009 Leeds Sport Awards.

Nick’s success hasn’t come about by accident, his week is jam-packed withsporting activity, “I play basketball twice a week at Morley. Then there’stennis at John Charles Centre for Sport on Fridays, wheelchair racing onThursday evenings, then gym and swim training at Pudsey” he tells us.

He now also coaches young people and adults in sport, something hefinds incredibly rewarding “I like helping people progress and passing onmy knowledge, especially to disabled athletes as I can identify with them.”

“There’s a huge programme of sporting activities for disabled peoplein Leeds” he tells us, “I encourage anyone who’s disabled to check outthe programme at www.leeds.gov.uk/disabilitysport and have a goat an activity”.

A fighting chanceLeeds-born Nicola hopes for Olympic glory

Nicola Adams is Britain’s most successful female boxer. She’s a strongmedal hope for London 2012 in the flyweight class as her

sport makes its Olympic debut.

Nicola started boxing after enjoying boxercise classes withher mum at a Leeds gym. She won her first bout aged just13 and hasn’t looked back! Now 29 she’s one of the world'smost impressive boxing talents. She even makes use ofswitch-hitting, shifting from fighting in orthodox stance tosouthpaw – a technique only the best can master.

A world silver medalist in 2008 and 2010; Nicola won herfirst major tournament in June 2011, securing gold at theEuropean Union championships in Poland. Then inOctober 2011 she took gold at the Europeanchampionships, putting her in pole position for next year’s

Olympic qualifier.

Let’s hope the former Burmantofts ABC star continues her golden streak at London 2012.
