NEWSLEEMING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Recently you may have read about the release of the 2016 NAPLAN results. The Year 9 results across the state were an improvement and our school improvement was even greater. Congratulations to Year 9 students for their outstanding results. Our school averages were above “like schools” in reading and writing and on par in numeracy. These are the only three areas for which “like school” results are produced. Our like schools are the top academic government schools in WA and the results reflect our long trend of continual improvement.

This month, after a 29 year career at Leeming Senior High School, Graeme Roberts, Science’s Head of Learning Area has decided to take his long service leave and wind that up with retirement. His final day was on Friday 16 September, where he basically walked out of school and into the airport to head off for a well-deserved holiday. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Graeme for his remarkable contribution to our school and wish him a long and happy retirement.

With our recent Sports Carnival it was fantastic to see so many students involved. Thank you to all the parents that volunteered in the canteen for the P&C and also those that dropped in to see all the events. Both attendance on the day and participation were very high. The enthusiasm and cheering lasted from the first event to the last.

(Continued from first page)

You may have noticed that there was a large coffee machine in operation at the Sports Carnival, selling delicious coffees. This machine was recently donated to the school along with a coffee grinder by Leeming’s P&C Committee. Next year the coffee machine will be situated in the newly renovated HE3 room where it will be available for students to do a barista course. This will give students the opportunity to complete further studies and/or a career in hospitalities. A special thank you to the Whitwell family for their assistance with the purchase, installation and running of the machine at the sports carnival.

With the growth of both the High School and the Educational Support Centre the morning drop off of students has become busy. Please do not drive into either the staff car park or the service road. Both of these are located off Aulberry Parade. Neither has the available space for you to easily or safely turn around. The best options are the Recreation Centre car park, Aulberry Parade pedestrian gate or Ramsdale Loop.

As we wind up Term 3 I would like to take the opportunity to wish the Year 12 students all the best for their completion of studies and upcoming sets of exams. It is a very stressful time and families are reminded there is help and support available at school through student services.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY – AN APPROVED SPECIALIST PROGRAM

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY ROAD SHOW

This terms challenge was to develop a series of Science demonstrations that could be presented at our local primary schools. The students attended after-school workshops where they practised the experiments and worked on their presentation skills. In Week 7 we visited Leeming Primary School to present to Year 5 and 6 students. The highlights for the young students were the dry ice experiments and the hydrogen balloons. In Week 8 we had the opportunity to go to West Leeming Primary School where we presented to Year 4, 5 and 6 students.

Five Year 10 students, Hayley Finlayson, Alice Blackwell, Grace Lim, Kerry Baker and Madeleine Turner have been running time series experiments germinating particular varieties of Wheat and Barely. The students conducted the experiments at school and spent the day at Murdoch University in the laboratory of Adj. Assoc. Professor Chris Florides who is an expert in grains research, extracting the proteins from the grains and using MADI-TOF Mass Spectrometry to analyse the protein composition of the grains.

The students have also participated in a Presentation Skills Workshop run by the Murdoch University Out-Reach team who

visited in Week 7. During this workshop the students developed their skills to speak at the forthcoming Pre-Harvest Sprouting Cereals Symposium taking place at the Sheraton Hotel in Week 10.

The students are in the process of analysing the results and producing a poster and oral presentation which they will present at the Pre-Harvest Sprouting Cereals Symposium. Their findings will be presented to over 200 international delegates who work in this field of research in Week 10.

Our thanks go to Adj. Assoc. Professor Florides for the opportunity the students have had to conduct ‘real life’ scientific research and for the support and guidance he is providing the students.

SCITECH CODING WORKSHOPS

In Term 4, as a collaboration between the Library and STA, we will be running a series of coding workshops on Tuesdays from 15 November until 29 November. Priority will be given to those students who are currently working with Ms Steel in the Library on Tuesdays, and then to members of STA from Years 7 and 8. The cost of the program will be $30 per student.

FIRE TECH CAMPS

For 2017 we are exploring the possibility of having a term-long program of coding workshops which will culminate in a parent presentation evening where the students will demonstrate the projects they have been working on over the term.

The sessions would run from 3.00pm – 4.30pm on one afternoon for 10 weeks. The cost of the entire series is $200. If students are interested in participating in this kind of program then please visit the following website for more information http://www.firetechcamp.com.au/courses/teen-coding-with-python-i and email Dr Janes ([email protected]) so we have an idea of the number of students who would like to participate.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK: WOMEN IN PHYSICS LECTURE

On Friday 19 June Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to attend the Women in Physics lecture which was hosted by visiting award-winning physicist Dr Catalina Curceanu.

The lecture was organised by the Australian Institute of Physics and Murdoch University and held in the Kim Beazley Lecture Theatre at the University’s Perth campus.

The lecture, Modern Quantum Technologies: The offspring of Schroedinger’s famous cat; explored everything from the structure of molecules and the forces which shape proteins, to the physics which form the foundations of computing.

Dr Curceanu explained the theory of quantum physics defined by Erwin Schroedinger, who created the famous paradox known as Schroedinger’s cat – which is simultaneously dead and alive.

AURECON BRIDGE BUILDING CHALLENGEOn 3 August, Kieron Pang, Joshua Bell and Josh Sturrock participated in the Aurecon Bridge Building Challenge at Scitech. Their bridge was built with efficiency in mind, using as few of the materials provided as possible to hold the most mass. The judges commended the students on the functionality of their bridge.

2016 YEAR 12 HUMAN BIOLOGY PERTH ZOO VISITThe annual Perth Zoo visit that Year 12 Human Biology students undertake was held on Monday 22 August this year. We were very fortunate that the weather favoured us and we had a wonderful day as always.

The students spent the day observing primates up close to support the Primates and Evolution part of the syllabus. They completed an observation booklet and also attended a one hour lecture on Primates by one of the Zoo education staff. The lecture was excellent and a valuable addition to the usual course material.

Due to the wet weather the previous week, the animals seemed to be making the most of the fine day. We had excellent opportunities for viewing many of the zoo animals up close as they sunned themselves.

Perth Zoo is a leader in Orangutan breeding program and we had a wonderful chance to see many of their animals at close quarters. Students were able to observe and record their behaviours.

Once again the café and coffee shop got lots of our business and overall an excellent day was had by all.

LIBRARY

UPGRADE UPDATE

Term 3 has been very busy with quite a bit of disruption from tradesman and furniture changes. We have arranged the areas so they can still be used, but hopefully all the work will be completed by the beginning of Term 4 with the arrival of new furniture.

DIGITAL LITERACY & INQUIRY SKILLS

Year 7s are progressing through the program with this term focussing on Cyber Safety, learning some new apps and working on a research task through HASS. This helps to reinforce the inquiry skills they have been learning all year.

CODING CLUB

The Coding Club meets every Tuesday afternoon in the Library. They are currently building their skills, learning about coding by playing purpose built games such as Minecraft and Star Wars.

Any students interested in joining are welcome to come along, it’s loads of fun and there is always afternoon tea.

LEEMING SHS CHESS TEAM – FIRST IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT

A huge congratulations to the Leeming SHS Chess Team for winning the Regional Chess Tournament on Friday 2 September. It was a fantastic effort by all competitors – a team will now represent Leeming at the State Finals.

DRESSING UP HISTORICAL FICTION

SUSTAINABLE CITY GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

WE'LL MAKE HISTORYHistorical Fiction has long been a fun way to learn about our past. Humanities and Social Science teachers recently embraced this idea by dressing up as characters from the Historical periods their classes have been learning about this term. An improbable Stone Age Heroine, Ruthless Romans, Medieval Royalty and Pernicious Pirates joined the Book Week parade through the library to high acclaim. Despite stiff competition from some snappily dressed librarians and English teachers, student judges decreed that HASS was the best dressed learning area and Queen Ms Turner won 1st prize!

How sustainable is Perth? This term saw Year 12 Geography students leaping aboard public transport to find out. Their geographical exploration started with transit oriented development in Fremantle, urban infill in Subiaco and ended up in inner city redevelopment in Perth. By train, bus and afoot, they investigated the secrets behind planning liveable cities, including mysterious green blobs in public spaces, swanky cafes and repurposed water playgrounds.

With final exams looming, senior students of Economics, Career & Enterprise, Geography, Psychology and History and have all been working hard. Our cameras here reveal Year 11 History students busy working collaboratively, sharing and putting together their knowledge and realising they know more than they thought about German history! Benefiting from each other's expertise, as well as that of their dedicated teacher Ms Turner, is bound to help them ace the Term 4 exams. The HASS team wish the best of luck to all HASS subject students!

JAPANESE

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOMAS PERCSY (YEAR 11)

Thomas has won the prestigious Judges’ Prize at the recent Western Australian Japanese Speech Contest on 28 August. His performance was impressive and outstanding as he persuaded the audience to catch the moments of life and to maintain a balance between the real world and the virtual world (enabled by the 21st century technology).

Thomas contested against all the Year 11 and 12 participants from schools all over the state and all students were challenged by judges to answer questions in relation to their chosen topics in Japanese language. We all know success is no accident. Thomas was successful because he put in hard work, sacrifice, perseverance and above all, passion for what he was doing.

YEARS 10, 11 AND 12 ONLINE LITERACY AND NUMERACY ASSESSMENT (OLNA) AUGUST/SEPTEMBER WINDOW COMPLETED

Between Monday 29 August and Thursday 8 September, a number of Year 10, 11 and 12 students were involved in the sitting of the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments (OLNA) here at Leeming SHS.

The OLNA forms the basis for the successful completion of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) – upper secondary achievement across Years 11 and 12. Without the successful achievement of OLNA, a student cannot achieve WACE.

Any student that has not achieved Band 8 or higher in either the Reading, Writing or Numeracy elements of Year 9 NAPLAN must sit the OLNA assessment in whichever element/s they achieved lower than Band 8. Students that have achieved Band 8 or higher in the listed elements are deemed to have “prequalified” and therefore do not have to sit OLNA (they have already achieved the minimum requirements of OLNA).

During the August/September window of OLNA, Leeming SHS had the following numbers of students sit elements of OLNA:

WRITING: 24 students in Year 10 and 17 students in Years 11 and 12

READING: 20 students in Year 10 and 15 students in Years 11 and 12

NUMERACY: 28 students in Year 10 and 26 students in Years 11 and 12

Of this total number of students that were required to sit OLNA, only two students in total were unable to sit a required element due to legitimate sickness.

Can I firstly thank the students that were involved in OLNA for their diligence in both preparing for and sitting the relevant element/s of OLNA. This is an extremely stressful and daunting period for these students, as they understand the importance of what they are attempting to achieve.

Secondly, can I thank the English and Maths departments here at Leeming SHS for the work they did in both preparing their students for OLNA, and in managing the students during this assessment period. This is an additional responsibility on top of their already exceptionally busy educational workloads. My sincere thanks to these staff.

As a school, we will hopefully receive the students’ results from the August/September window of OLNA by late October (the assessments are marked centrally and then disseminated back to schools). Families will be informed of results once this has occurred.

Unfortunately, for those Year 10 and Year 11 students that have not achieved OLNA at that point, they will need to re-sit the relevant assessment/s during the March window of OLNA in 2017 (there is a March and September window of OLNA each year from Year 10 onwards). The relevant families will be informed of these requirements prior to the assessments.

If you require further information regarding OLNA, please feel free to contact me directly.

Regards,

Mr V. Bryan Student Services & VET Manager Years 10-12

Well done to you all.

AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS MENTORING EXPERIENCE

AIME’s Got Game

Throughout the year a group of Indigenous Leeming SHS students participated in the ‘AIME’s Got Game’ national talent competition. This competition gives a new generation of talented Indigenous youth the opportunity to celebrate their gifts and share future visions of Australia filled with hope, positivity and success. We are absolutely thrilled that Nicholas Baker in Year 10 has been announced as one of the national finalists for 2016 for his deadly beat boxing performance that blew judges away! He has also been invited to perform at the Western Australian AIME evening in October in front of hundreds of guests which is a great honour.

We wish him the best of luck heading into the finals! Mrs H. Wills

HAVE SUM FUN ONLINE - TERM 3

Once again this term our talented Year 7, 8, and 9 AEP students have partaken enthusiastically in the Have Sum Fun Online (HSFOL) competitions. MAWA, the Mathematical Association of Western Australia, placed three rounds of ten challenging questions online, allowing a window of an hour to complete each round. There were discussions, debates, laughter and grizzles in the process of problem solving involving some very intricate and complex mathematical questions. HSFOL is a wonderful opportunity for students with strong mathematical ability to work together to problem solve collaboratively whilst challenging other students across Western Australia.

In this round, Leeming SHS students’ performance was praiseworthy. In particular our 7_4 students, who were in the lead for rounds 1 and 2 (out of 49 schools) and were 6th position on the league table. There was a difference of only 2.4 points between us and the winning team! Our Year 9 teams also performed exceptionally well, finishing 10th and 14th respectively, amongst 36 teams. Once again, I am proud of all students for their laudable performance.

Our amazing students who participated in HSFOL this term are:

Year 7 Team: Varda Bhatt, Keerten Prabakara, Keeley Taylor, Sriram Sanjai

Year 7 Team: Janapriya Ramachandran, Charlotte Kester, Emma van Dongen, Rebecca Schulz

Year 8 Team: Ramsi Bunting, Cameron Beisley, Aaliyah Gnak, Sarah Sheehan

Year 8 Team: Joshua Bell, Priya Conrad, Sofia De Lacerda Barros, Isaac Blackwell

Year 9 Team: Joe Lao, Piper Bradwell, Alexander Hernandez, Fu Ming Gao

Year 9 Team: Yashasvi Lohan, Julien Gerard, Bryony Whitwell, Khaled Ali Zulfikar

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

A fun and enjoyable card game that involves skill, concentration, and most importantly MATHS! Over six weeks our wonderful teacher, Ms Keihani and a group of eight students (including myself) put in the time and dedication to practice and improve our skills for the game called Numero. For most of the participants, this was a new game, and some aspects were difficult but we kept working hard despite the challenges.

We were up against 16 other teams that ranged from Year 7s to Year 10s. There was a lot of team work and good sportsmanship involved on this day. There were four main games in which we were required to participate. The first was individual top take, the second was team top take, the third was the traditional card game, and the fourth was scramble. Some of these games we were quite familiar with, others not so much, but we all had a go and enjoyed ourselves.

When we arrived back at school we all sat down in the mathematics block and talked about the day. In the end it wasn’t about our placings and whether we won or not (even though one of our teams came 5th) but about the fun and love of Maths it brought to us. If you were thinking of getting involved come on down to M4 at lunch on Wednesdays and have a go, you never know how much you will enjoy it.

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

AMC is an annual competition run by AMT which provides students with opportunities to discover their own talent and inspire great interest in the subject. This year one hundred and sixty three students from Years 7 to 12 participated in this Australia wide competition. There were two high distinctions – Fangting Yu (Year 11) and Fu Ming Gao (Year 9), and 27 distinctions which are listed below.

NUMERO CHALLENGE

Numero is a game which develops number skills and problem solving skills in students. This term, Year 7 students have spent quite some time preparing for Numero Challenge which was conducted at Ellenbrook Secondary College. Ms N Keihani and Year 7 students have spent most of their recess and lunch time practising these skills. There was a skills development session run by Ms Julie Richards. Our students performed incredibly in this challenge and one of our teams secured 5th position.

This is what Emma van Dongen has to say about this day.

SQUASH

2016 saw the largest number of squash teams entered into the Interschool Squash Competition with 57 teams participating. For this reason the normal one day carnival changed to two separate days. Day One saw our girl’s teams and junior boy’s teams competing. With so much competition our best placed teams were third with fantastic performances by Abel Jin, Ashleigh Appleyard and Tess Anderson to name a few.

The second day of competition was for the senior boys teams. Our best placed team of Michael Boulos, Matt McCooey and Jordan Podesta was ninth. Unfortunately I didn’t realise until it was too late but their first game was recorded as a loss when they actually won. This meant they couldn’t get any higher in the standings than ninth. I would like to thank these boys for conducting themselves with good sportsmanship and continuing on with the competition without complaint. I believe these boys would have finished in third place if they were credited with a win in the opening round.

YEAR 8 LIGHTNING CARNIVAL REVIEW

Leeming SHS entered a number of teams into the SCAHPE Year 8 Lightning Carnival on Friday 12 August this year. We entered teams in Soccer, AFL, Netball and Basketball. The focus of the day is on enjoyment and participation. The fine weather on the day and excellent organisation of the teams and competition ensured that these goals were achieved.

The standout team performances on the day were produced by our AFL team who won the B Division after going undefeated and our Boys Soccer team who came second in the B Division after winning 3 out of 4 games. Congratulations to team members from these successful teams.

Our Girls Basketball team came third in the tough A Division after winning 2 out of 6 games. The Girls Soccer team came fourth in a large B division after winning 3 out of 6 games, with 2 draws. The Boys Basketball team came 5th out of 8 teams in B Division.

Our Netball teams also acquitted themselves very well in the difficult A1 and B1 Divisions, finishing 5th and 4th respectively.

Well done to all of the participants for representing Leeming SHS with pride on the day and also a big thank you to the Senior School coaches and umpires that helped to make the day possible.

We held our annual Straight Six race on 1 September. The Straight Six sees the 3 fastest boys and girls from each year group sprinting down the Administration Corridor. The Year 12 winners get their name engraved on the Garnett Cup. This year was the 25th running of this prestigious tradition at Leeming SHS. We had some close and exciting finishes and the atmosphere was great, with hundreds of keen spectators cheering on the competitors.

It is fitting that Amy Harburn gets her name on the cup as she completed the rare feat of winning the event in all of her 5 years at the school. Congratulations Amy for your amazing achievement. CHAPLAIN’S CHAT

12 August 2016 was the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast. It is an annual event that the Leeming Uniting Church pays for 10 tickets for students and staff from this school to attend. As a school we greatly appreciate their generosity. The event was held at the Crown Perth Grand Ball Room.

Six of our student’s in their best school attire sat down to a cooked continental breakfast, which was beautifully presented and tasted great. The Managing Director of Sonshine radio Bevan Jones was the master of ceremonies. The Key note speaker was Prof. Ian Harper – one of Australia’s best known economists. He has written, “Economics for life: An economist reflects on the meaning of life, money and what really matters.”

There were four prayers one; for Nation and State; one for business and work; one for the community and the public sector; and the final one for the youth. Each were meaningful and to the point.

These are the comment written by each student that attended this special event;

I thought the breakfast was great I learnt so much and met so many wonderful people.

It was an eye-opening experience and completely worth it.

No matter how crippled or poor we are , we are all loved by God, because we all have that sacred symbol, that he has died for us. Very good loved it so much.

Very good loved it still have my ticket from 2014 will never forget 2016 though, needed it for my job choices.

It was lovely to hear Prof Ian Harper talk about the Christian Life as being an Economist. And it was great to hear about everything that goes on in the job.

It was incredibly inspirational and a wonderful honour being able to attend.

The Governor’s Prayer Breakfast was fun and interesting. It was also very informative. Overall this was a awesome experience for me.
