SAVING GAMES

You can save at any time duringthe game. Press the esc or R key topause, and select Save from the PauseMenu. Highlight Create a New SaveGame or an existing save slot andpress the enter key. All your progressto your current point will be saved.Your location at your last checkpointis also saved.

If an older Legacy of Kain: Defiance™save game exists in the save slot youselected, it will be overwritten duringthe save. Be careful: once data isoverwritten, it cannot be recovered.

• Each save requires 97kb forautosave and manual saves.

• To resume a saved game, selectLoad Game from the Title Menuand then select the save filefrom the Load Game screen. Youwill return to the game at the lastcheckpoint you reached priorto saving.

OPTIONS

Move the mouse or press the cursorkeys 1/2to highlight an option.Press the left mouse button orthe enter key to see a submenu,if available.

• Game Options – Set the gameoptions you require during play:Subtitles On/Off and In-GameHints On/Off.

1. At start-up, the game will scanthe hard drive for Legacy of Kain:Defiance™ saved game data.

Note: Legacy of Kain: Defiance™is an epic game. We recommendsaving your progress frequentlyand continuing your saved gamesfor the most satisfying gameexperience.

2. The Title Menu offers the followingoptions. Highlight your selectionand press the enter key:

• Start New Game – Startthe game from the beginning.

• Continue Game – If you havepreviously saved Legacy ofKain: Defiance™ game dataon the hard drive, you can selectthis option to resume the game.You will return to the game atthe last checkpoint you reachedprior to saving. (For informationon saving, see page 7.)

• Load Game – If you havepreviously saved Legacy ofKain: Defiance™ game dataon the hard drive, you can selectthis option, then highlightthe saved game you want to playon the menu, and then pressthe enter key.

• Dark Chronicle – Replaystoryline cinematics you’verevealed during your progressthrough the game.

• Bonus Materials – Review andselect Bonus Materials you’veunlocked by your successesin the game.

• Options – Adjust the in-gamesettings. (See page 7 for details.)

PAUSE MENU

During play, press the esc or R keyto pause the game and displaythe Pause Menu. From here you cansave your game progress, modify gameoptions, or quit the game.

KAIN’S EMPIREKain concluded with the realization that Voradorwas right — that vampirism is not a curse but ablessing . . . that vampires are dark gods whoseduty it is to thin the human herd. With intentional irony, Kain established theruined Pillars as the symbolic seat of his newempire, and the shattered Balance Pillar asthe base of his throne. In an act of calculatedblasphemy, Kain raided the ancient tomb ofthe Sarafan, a fanatical order of warrior-priestsonce sworn to eradicate the vampires plaguingNosgoth. From the desiccated corpses of theselong-dead knights, Kain raised his six vampiric“sons” to become the Lieutenants of hisfledgling empire.But the Pillars, Kain ultimately realized, weremore than just a human edifice — the healthof the Pillars was tied inextricably into the healthof the land. With the Pillars left unrestored,corruption seeped slowly into the land likea poison, turning his empire intoan irredeemable wasteland.

CONDEMNEDRather than evolving slowly over time,vampires experience periods of acceleratedmetamorphosis, entering dormant statesfrom which they emerge transformed. When Raziel, first among Kain’s Lieutenants,revealed his latest evolution — a pair of bat-likewings — Kain responded with an act ofseemingly egotistical sadism. Tearing Raziel’snewly fledged wings from his back, he orderedRaziel to be cast into the Lake of the Dead,where he would burn forever in theroiling Abyss.Raziel tumbled endlessly into the murky depths,his flesh dissolving as he burned with white-hotfire. After an eternity of torment, Raziel’s ruinedbody came to rest — and as the pain receded,he realized that he had not only survived thedescent, but had been delivered to the very seatof the Underworld.Like Kain before him, Raziel was saved from thebrink of oblivion by a mysterious benefactor —a preternaturally ancient god dwelling in thedepths of the Abyss, who transformed Razielinto a devourer of souls, and released him backinto the world to take his revenge.

VENGEANCERaziel, now the Elder God’s fledgling angel ofdeath, resurfaced to discover that centuries hadinexplicably passed since his execution. Kain’sempire lay in ruin, and Raziel found himself

assailed by the degenerate offspring of hisformer brethren, who had long sincedevolved into monstrous forms.Undeterred by these revelations, Raziel pursuedKain across Nosgoth’s blasted landscape,galvanized by a hunger for revenge, and arelentless new thirst — not for the blood ofhumans, but for the vampires' apostate souls.Kain, however, had other plans for Raziel.Seemingly unsurprised by Raziel’s miraculousreturn, Kain baited Raziel along the course of hissingle-minded vendetta, channeling him intobattle with his mutated brethren, and intoa fateful confrontation at the Pillars, whereinKain raised the Soul Reaver against Raziel.The ancient blade, believed to be indestructible,shattered when Kain attempted to strike Razieldown. The soul-devouring sentience captive inthe blade was thus released, and binding itselfto Raziel as a wraith-blade, became hissymbiotic weapon.Kain seemed not stunned but strangely satisfiedwith this shocking outcome, and lured Razielfurther into Nosgoth’s northern wastes, leadingto their final confrontation in Moebius’s long-abandoned Chronoplast chamber.Driven by the fatalistic visions revealed byMoebius’s devices, Kain activated the time-streaming portal that would propel him andRaziel centuries into Nosgoth’s past. Free will,Kain feared, might only be an illusion — but heknew their fates were intertwined in ways thatRaziel had not begun to fathom.

REVELATIONSSwept back into Nosgoth’s early history, Razielbegan to unearth the secrets of his past …… how his coming was foretold by an ancientrace, Nosgoth’s original Vampires, who forgedthe Reaver for their champion, as the weaponof their salvation.… how he himself slaughtered the SarafanLieutenants, and was his own murderer, andhow he thus became the catalyst not only ofKain’s future empire, but of his own dark destiny.… and finally, how he was fated to become theravenous spirit imprisoned in the Soul Reaverblade — that this was, and always had been,the purgatorial cycle of his destiny. The wraith-blade, he finally understood, was his own soul,twinned and bound eternally to him.His motives still a mystery, Kain sought to changehistory by preventing the blade from consumingRaziel’s soul. But Raziel, nearly obliterated bythe Reaver, realized that he could never escapethis terrible destiny — Kain had merelypostponed it.

THE PILLARSIn the centuries before Kain’s birth, the landwas protected by an oligarchy of sorcerersknown as the Circle of Nine. These guardianswere sworn to serve and protect the Pillarsof Nosgoth, the ancient edifice towering overthe earth as a manifestation of the mysteriouspower that preserved and gave life to the land.But the Circle was infiltrated by dark forces, andAriel — the Balance Guardian — was cruellymurdered. Her assassination sent psychicshockwaves throughout the Circle, and in theirderangement the remaining sorcerers turnedtheir powers to dark purposes, poisoning theland with their sorcery and abandoning thePillars to stand like silent, decaying sentries.

DESTINYInto this dying world Kain was born. The sonof an aristocratic Nosgoth family, he lived theprivileged life of a nobleman, never realizinghis undiscovered destiny — that he wasmarked from birth as Ariel’s successor, fatedto take her place as the Guardian of Balance.Ignorant of his destiny, the ambitious butdirectionless Kain roamed the land — andduring one fateful journey, he was ambushedby brigands and murdered, cruelly impaledon his assassin’s sword.

A DARK COVENANTPlucked from the brink of oblivion by theNecromancer Mortanius, Kain awakened inthe underworld, still transfixed by his enemy’sblade. Tormented by his hunger for vengeance,and heedless of the spiritual cost, Kainrecklessly accepted the Necromancer’s offer ofrevenge — and rose from his tomb to discoverthat he had been resurrected as a vampire.Kain quickly tracked down his assassins andexacted his bloody revenge. With hisvengeance and hunger sated, he sought onlya cure for the vampiric curse that afflicted him.Guided by Mortanius and the specter Ariel —now bound helplessly to the decaying Pillarsshe once served — Kain hunted down each ofthe corrupt sorcerers now poisoning Nosgoth.Only with their deaths could the Pillars behealed — and only by restoring Balance wouldKain be released from his vampiric curse.At first reluctant to live the horror of anexistence blighted by a thirst for human blood,Kain soon adapted and discovered, withinhis darkened soul, a growing disaffectionfor humankind as he embraced hisnewfound immortality.

During his journey, Kain discovered andclaimed the Soul Reaver, an ancient soul-devouring blade, and stumbled across — notso coincidentally — a time-streaming devicecreated by Moebius, the Guardian of Time.

FRAGILE HISTORYAgainst the counsel of the ancient vampireVorador, Kain found himself embroiled inhuman events, caught in a bloody battlebetween Ottmar’s Army of Hope and theruthlessly advancing armies of the Nemesis,from the north. As the tide of the battle turned,Kain used his only means of escape — thetime-streaming device, which swept him nearlyfifty years back into Nosgoth’s past.Hoping to alter the course of Nosgoth’s history,Kain assassinated the young King William theJust, who would become the diabolic tyrantknown as the Nemesis. After sating himself onhis victim’s blood, Kain returned to the present— only to discover that his murder of thebeloved King had ignited a genocidal waragainst vampires, led by the time-streamer,Moebius, himself.Upon his return, Kain witnessed the future thathe had wrought — and the final, triumphantact of Moebius’s cold-blooded mob. Vorador,the last of the era’s vampires, was guillotinedand his head held aloft for a cheering,bloodthirsty crowd — leaving Kain the solesurviving vampire in Nosgoth.

THE FATEFUL DILEMMAAs his quest brought him full-circle, Kainconfronted the destiny that Mortanius and Arielhad hidden from him — that he was theBalance Guardian, and that only by sacrificinghimself could he restore the Pillars. Arielpresented him with a final, climactic decision— sacrifice himself to heal the land, but ensurethe extinction of the vampires; or refuse thesacrifice, and seal the world’s corruption.Revolted by the machinations of the humansorcerers and alienated from his formerhumanity, Kain chose the latter path — optingto rule the world in its damnation rather thancommit himself to oblivion. This apocalypticact completed the Pillars’ destruction — themighty columns toppled as Kain sealed theirruinous fate — and damned Ariel toceaselessly haunt the dilapidated Pillars sheonce served. Until the Balance is restored,she can never be released.

Cunning and relentless, the vampire Kain battles theoppressive agents of Fate that seek to destroyhim. For centuries, he has ruthlessly pursueda singular ambition — to take his rightful

place as Balance Guardian, thus returning Nosgothto vampire rule. And Raziel, he believes, is the key to

fulfilling this goal. Armed with the legendary Reaver blade— the weapon fated to become Raziel’s eternal prison —

Kain seeks to reclaim their true destinies from thewreckage of history.

Kain wields the Reaver in its physical form, a blood-drinkingblade forged by Nosgoth’s ancient Vampires as the weaponof their prophesied hero.

Once the greatest of Kain’s vampire Lieutenants, Razielis now only a ruined specter of his former glory. Armedwith the wraith-blade of the Soul Reaver, he strivesto unravel the truth behind his enigmatic fate,a destiny apparently foretold in the earliestcenturies of Nosgoth’s history. Raziel seeksonly to escape the bonds of his one-timebenefactor, now turned adversary — themysterious Elder God that resurrected himas a reaper of souls — and to somehow avertthe terrible destiny appointed for himwhen the Reaver was forged.

As his weapon, Raziel bears the sword that the Reaveris fated to become — a soul-devouring wraith-blade.

RAZIEL’S ON-SCREEN DISPLAYTK Meter — Stores energy in its green Runes for performing Telekinesis.

Health Gauge — Holds Raziel’s health. This gauge is a coiled spiral, whichunwinds as Raziel is damaged or loses energy. The gauge is filled by devouringvictims’ souls. While in the Material Realm, Raziel gradually tires and mustregularly restore his energy. In the Spectral Realm, his health declines onlywhen he takes damage. Increase Raziel’s health capacity by finding HealthTalismans, which allow Raziel to build up a larger supply of energy to counterincreasing dangers. To devour souls, press and hold the I key with an enemyin your grasp, or to draw the soul from the body at a distance. If you releasethe key too early, the soul may escape. (See page 17 for more details.)

Reaver Gauge — Holds the Reaver’s energy charge. (See pages 10 and 18for more details.)

Reaver Menu — Displays various Elemental Reaver empowerments Raziel hasgained at Elemental Forges. The colored pips next to the menu show whichelemental Reavers Raziel has acquired so far. Press the 4 or 6 key (num-pad)to select and press the J key to activate any available enhancement.(See page 19 for more information on Elemental Forges.)

Shift Menu — Press the 5 key (num-pad) to display the Shift icons, whichRaziel uses to shift between the Material and Spectral Realms. Press the J keyto activate realm shift. If Raziel is in the Material Realm, he can shiftinto the spectral plane at any time; if he is in the Spectral Realm, he must benear a host-creature in order to shift. (See page 16 for expanded informationon realm-shifting.)

KAIN’S ON-SCREEN DISPLAYTK Meter — Holds energy in its green Runes for performing Telekinesis. Each TK

use expends some energy, and overuse depletes the reserves. The metergradually refills when not in use. You can extend your TK power by finding TKRunes, which increase the meter’s capacity. (See Telekinesis (TK) on page 13for expanded information.)

Health Gauge — Holds Kain’s health. This gauge is a globe of blood, which isdepleted when Kain is wounded or as his hunger grows. The gauge is filled bydrinking enemies’ blood, and drains even as Kain searches for more victims. Youcan increase Kain’s health capacity by finding Health Talismans, allowing Kainto build up a greater supply of health to meet increasing dangers. To drink blood,press and hold the I key on a vulnerable enemy. The longer you hold down thekey, the more blood Kain will drink. (See page 14 for more details.)

Reaver Gauge — Holds the Reaver’s energy charge. With each strike, the Reaverabsorbs some of its victim’s energy, adding to the gauge amount. When the gaugeis full, the Reaver becomes charged and a Reaver Spell is armed. The amountdecays over time, so Kain must continually seek out and battle enemies tomaintain the Reaver’s energy. Press the U key near a stunned or vulnerableenemy to feed the Reaver with the victim’s life energy and fill the gauge.(See The Reaver beginning on page 18 for more information.)

Balance Emblem Menu — Holds the Balance Emblem fragments Kain hasdiscovered. Each shard empowers the Reaver with a different combat effect.Use the 4 or 6 key (num-pad) to select and activate any available segmentof the Balance Emblem. (See page 19 for additional informationabout the Balance Emblem.)

TELEKINESIS (TK)

TK USEBoth Kain and Raziel employTelekinetic force to hurl enemiesaway or shatter obstacles.

Initially, Kain’s TK powers are muchmore developed than Raziel’s. Fromthe beginning, Kain can swiftly blastenemies away, or lift them into the airand hurl them in any direction. Earlyon, he acquires the ability to igniteor douse certain flammable objectsusing TK.

Raziel’s telekinetic powers are muchweaker than Kain’s at first. Thoughhe can fire quick TK bursts to hurlenemies away or shatter obstacles,he cannot lift and throw enemiesuntil later on.

• Tap the L key to fire a quick blastof TK.

• Use the environments to inflictdamage. Blast enemies into hurtfulor potentially deadly obstacles.Propel enemies into fire, breakableobjects and solid terrain obstacles.Throw enemies onto spikes or hurlthem from ledges for instant kills.

• Hold down the L key to liftan enemy, use the movement orcursor keys to aim, and releasethe L key to complete the throw.

MANUALLY AIMING TKYou can manually aim your TK to targetspecific objects and solve puzzles.

• Hold down the O key or theright mouse button to displaythe targeting sight. While holdingthe key or button, move the mouseor the movement or cursor keysto position the sight over the targetobject. Release the O keyor right mouse button to launchthe TK blast.

• Use TK to clear obstacles, shatterbreakable objects, strike distantswitches, and ignite or dousecertain flammable objects.

THE TK METER

Each TK use expends some TK energy,shown by green Runes in the TK Meter.TK power regenerates gradually overtime, but overuse depletes your energyreserves. You can augment your TKpower by finding TK Runes to increasethe capacity of the TK Meter. (See page25 for more information.)

GAME PROGRESS

TWO HEROESThe game’s plot unfolds throughchapters, focusing alternately on Kainand Raziel as they pursue theirseparate quests. Whether their pathsconverge or veer in oppositedirections, their destinies areultimately intertwined.

While both heroes move through thesame worlds (though often on differentplanes) and share moves in common,each has a unique way of dealingwith puzzles, hazards and enemies,and surviving.

COMMON ABILITIESUse the movement or cursor keysto move both Kain and Raziel throughthe worlds. Use their common abilities(on this page) or see pages 14-17for each character’s unique abilities.

Jumping

• Press the space bar or K keyto jump up.

• Press the space bar or K keywhile using the movement orcursor keys for a running jump.

Climbing

• Jump (space bar or K key) onto aclimbable wall surface to grab on.

• Use the movement or cursor keysto maneuver up and down.

• Either climb to the top, or kick jump(space bar or K key) off the wall.

Manipulating Objects

• Press the J key to pick up objectsand interact with them. Someobjects can be shoved, othersrotated, still others can be broken.

• You can also grab (J key) ontomoveable objects and drag themusing the movement or cursor keys.

ARTIFACTS

Throughout their journeys, Kain andRaziel encounter obstacles where theirprogress is blocked without the aid ofsome object or artifact. These missingemblems and relics act as keys totrigger events and open paths thatare otherwise sealed.

• To pick up an artifact, stand nearthe object and press the J key.Note: Raziel can only pick upand use artifacts while in theMaterial Realm (see page 16).

• Collected artifacts are automaticallyinventoried, and can be viewedat any time in the Status Screen(see page 21).

• To use an artifact, stand in thedesired location, and pressthe J key. If the artifact isin the character’s inventory,it will automatically be used.

CHECKPOINTSDuring your journey, you will passlandmarks serving as checkpoints toyour progress. Checkpoints revealthemselves as a glowing symbolappearing on the ground as you crossthe checkpoint spot. Checkpoints markthe location you’ll be set back to if yourhealth is depleted, and where you’llresume the game when you continue itfrom the Title Menu.

When you resume a saved game, youpossess all the progress up to your lastsaved point. Your location, however, isat the last checkpoint you passedbefore saving.

KAIN’S UNIQUE ABILITIES

BLOOD-DRINKING

Kain’s ceaseless blood-hunger causeshis Health Gauge to drain slowly overtime, requiring him to feed frequentlyto sustain his energy and heal hiswounds. When an enemy is vulnerable(either stunned or otherwiseincapacitated), Kain can consume itsblood to restore his health.

• Hold the I key near a vulnerableenemy to bite into the victimor drain its blood from a distance.

• The longer the key is held,the greater the health benefit.

MIST FORM

Kain can dissolve briefly into mist topass through permeable barriers (suchas bars and gates). He also employs hismist form to dodge with supernaturalspeed in combat.

• To breach a gated barrier, use themovement or cursor keys tomaneuver Kain into the grate. Hewill automatically employ mist formto pass through.

SUPERHUMAN LEAP

In some areas, Kain can use hisvampiric strength to leap acrosswide gaps.

• Animated markers indicate ledgesthat Kain can use as jump-off points.

• While standing on a leap marker,hold down the space bar or K keyto charge the jump.

• Release the space bar or K keyto launch Kain across the gap.

FLOATING DESCENTWhen jumping or falling, Kain can slowhis descent to land silently and withgreater accuracy.

• While in mid-air, hold downthe space bar or K key to slowyour descent.

• Release the space bar or K keyto resume a normal descent.

BAT FLIGHT

Kain can fly rapidly between distantlocations by transforming into a swarmof bats. He must first concentrate hisenergy and mentally project himselftoward his destination, visible on thehorizon. For this reason, he can onlyemploy bat flight from specific sitesindicated by animated markers.

• While standing on a bat flightmarker, hold down the space baror K key to gather Kain’s energy.

• Release the space bar or K keyto transform into a flock of bats.

• Kain also disperses into bats whenhis health is depleted, coalescingagain at the last checkpointhe passed.

WATER VULNERABILITYFor vampires, immersion in water isdeadly. Kain must be cautious aroundwater obstacles. If he falls in, his healthwill be immediately depleted, and hewill be reset to his last checkpoint.

SPECTRAL AND MATERIAL REALMSRaziel is a denizen of the Spectral Realm,a shadowy underworld populated bynightmarish creatures and lost souls.To escape the spirit world, he must firstfind a host creature. Early in the game,he discovers spirit-gases rising from burialsites, and learns that he can employthe corpses within as conduits to enterthe Material Realm.

Once in the physical world, Razieltransforms the host’s flesh into his ownimage, but his energy is continuouslydepleted to maintain this physicalmanifestation. To restore his energy andremain in the Material Realm, Raziel mustfeed on the souls of his victims. Whenhis energy is exhausted, Raziel loses hisphysical form and is swept back into thespectral realm, to his last checkpoint.

By shifting between realms, Raziel cantake advantage of the unique propertiesof each realm.

• Raziel must be in the Material Realmto open doors, pick up or use artifacts,move objects, or break barriers. In thespirit world, physical objects are likeshadows, and cannot be manipulated.

• In the Spectral Realm, Raziel candematerialize to pass through gatedbarriers, which are impassablein the physical world.

• Some climbable wall surfaces appearonly in either the Spectral or MaterialRealm, requiring Raziel to shift beforehe can use them.

• The Spectral Realm is a darker, moretwisted version of the physical world.In some instances, the distortionof the terrain may open a path that isnot accessible in the Material Realm.

• Water in the spirit world has nobuoyancy. To swim, Raziel must enterthe Material Realm.

• Time passes far more slowlyin the Spectral Realm. Raziel can usethis to his advantage when solvingsome puzzles.

Shifting from Spectral to Material

In the Spectral Realm, spirit gasesindicate where a corpse is buried,which Raziel can use as a conduitto enter the physical world.

To shift from the Spectral Realminto the material world,

• Stand on or near a site where spiritgases are rising. Press the 5 key(num-pad) to display the MaterialIcon (the Reaver symbol). If no hostis available, the symbol will notbe displayed.

• Press the Action key (default: J key)to confirm your intention. Raziel willproject his energy into the buriedcorpse, rise and transform the fleshinto his own image as he entersthe Material Realm.

Shifting from Material to Spectral

Raziel can abandon his physicalmanifestation at any time and returnto the Spectral Realm.

To shift from the Material Realm backto the spirit world:

• Press and hold the 5 key (num-pad)to display the Spectral Icon.

• Press the Action key (default: J key)to confirm your intention and shiftinto the Spectral Realm.

DEVOURING SOULS

Raziel sustains his energy not bydrinking his victims’ blood, but byconsuming their very souls. Whenan enemy is vulnerable (stunned orotherwise incapacitated), Raziel candraw the soul from its body anddevour it to restore his health.

While in the Material Realm, Raziel’senergy constantly decays and must berestored. In the spirit world, his healthonly declines when he is woundedby spectral enemies.

To devour a soul:

• Press and hold the I key neara vulnerable enemy to tearthe victim’s soul out, or draw itfrom the body at a distance,until the soul is devoured.

• If you release the trigger too early,the soul may escape.

GLIDINGRaziel can no longer fly, but he canuse his ruined wings to glide acrossotherwise-impassable gaps.

• Press the space bar or K keyto jump.

• While in mid-air, press and holdthe space bar or K key again tograb your wings and glide.

• Release the space bar or K keyat any time to drop back downto earth.

PHASING THROUGHBARRIERSIn the Spectral Realm, Raziel candematerialize to pass throughpermeable barriers like gates andfences, which are impenetrableto him in the physical world.

• While in the Spectral Realm, usethe movement or cursor keysto maneuver Raziel throughthe barrier. He will automaticallydematerialize and pass through.

SWIMMING

In the spirit world, water has nobuoyancy, but in the Material Realm,Raziel can swim through flooded areasto reach otherwise inaccessible goals.

• To swim at the surface, use themovement or cursor keys to orientand propel Raziel.

• Press the J key to dive beneaththe surface.

• While underwater, use themovement or cursor keys to orientRaziel, and press or hold the J keyto propel him through the water.

• To exit the water, either swimtoward a low ledge, or pressthe space bar or K key to jump upfrom the water’s surface.

• Raziel cannot engage in combat,manipulate objects, or use TKwhile swimming.

THEREAVER

Both Kain and Raziel are armed withdifferent incarnations of the sameweapon — the legendary Reaverblade. Kain wields the sword in itsphysical form, a blood-drinking bladeforged by Nosgoth’s ancient Vampiresas the weapon of their prophesiedhero. Raziel bears the sword thatthe Reaver is fated to become —a soul-devouring wraith-blade.

Each bears the Reaver as his soleweapon, and both Kain and Raziel earnenhancements for the blade over thecourse of the game, enabling themto employ elemental sorcery in theirattacks. Like Raziel, the wraith-bladeis a spectral entity; but Raziel cansummon the wraith-blade into theMaterial Realm to wield it in combat.

FEEDING THE REAVERLike Kain and Raziel, the Reaver hasan insatiable appetite for its enemies’life-force. With each strike, the Reaverabsorbs a little of its victim’s energy,and the Reaver Gauge begins to fill.Because the energy in the ReaverGauge decays over time, Kain andRaziel must maintain an intenseassault to build the Reaverto a full charge.

When an enemy is reduced to avulnerable state, Kain and Raziel mayforego drinking the victim’s blood ordevouring its soul, and instead feedthe victim’s life energy to the Reaverblade, increasing its power temporarily.

• Press the U key near a stunnedor vulnerable enemy to finish itwith the Reaver, feeding its lifeenergy to the blade.

More elaborate combos and finishingmoves will fill the Reaver Gaugemore rapidly. (See Combat startingon page 22.)

REAVER CHARGE

When the Reaver Gauge is full,the Reaver becomes charged and itscombat performance is temporarilyaugmented. The effect varies based onthe current Reaver enhancement. Forinstance, the Reaver may temporarilydeal more damage, or inflict paralyzingor stunning force upon its victims.

When the Reaver Charge ends,the gauge is completely depleted.

REAVER CHARGE STONES

These arcane stones enable you tobuild the Reaver to a charge by strikingthe stone with multiple attacks.

REAVER SPELL

A second effect occurs when theReaver Gauge is full. A Reaver Spell isarmed, indicated by a glow aroundthe Reaver Gauge. The spell can betriggered at any time.

• Hold down the J key to gatherthe spell’s energy.

• Release the J key to launchthe spell.

The effect of the Reaver Spell dependson the current Reaver enhancement.

• Some spells inflict damage to allenemies in the area.

• Other spells affect Raziel or Kain,enabling them to turn invisibletemporarily or unleash a flurryof extra-dimensional attacks.

• Some Reaver Spells are usefulfor solving puzzles.

REAVER ENHANCEMENTSYou can unearth ancient Vampireenchantments that increase theReaver’s effectiveness in combat,and may help you solve puzzlesor defeat obstacles. These are BalanceEmblems and Elemental Forges.

BALANCE EMBLEM

Kain discovers fragments of theVampires’ Balance Emblem. Each shardof the talisman represents a differentprinciple that enhances the Reaver.Kain’s Balance Emblem appears onand can be activated from hison-screen display (see page 10).

ELEMENTAL FORGES

Within the ancient ruins of theVampire Citadel, Raziel discoversarcane forges that permanentlyenhance the Reaver with elementalpowers. Raziel’s Elemental Reaversappear on and can be activated fromhis on-screen display (see page 11).

RESTORING HEALTHBY FEEDING

Because they are vampiric creatures,Kain and Raziel’s health drainscontinuously and must be replenishedby the blood and souls of their victims.Note: Though Raziel’s energy does notdrain in the Spectral Realm, it decaysconstantly while he remains in thephysical world.

• To feed, hold down the I keywhile near a stunned orvulnerable creature.

• As Kain, the longer you hold downthe I key, the more blood Kainwill receive.

Kain and Raziel can also foregothe health benefit in order to feedthe Reaver instead, temporarilyaugmenting its power in combat.

• To feed the Reaver, pressthe U key near a stunnedor vulnerable enemy.

RESTORING HEALTHWITHOUT COMBATKain and Raziel have a few means torecover their health without engagingin combat or feeding on enemies.

• Blood and Soul Basins can bedrained to recover health.

• Kain and Raziel can feed fromchained captives without riskof injury.

• Raziel can also feed on the lostsouls of the Spectral Realm toreplenish his spirit energy.

SETBACKSBoth Raziel and Kain are immortal, andcannot be killed by ordinary means.But if they fail to feed, or are woundedtoo grievously, they are forced todematerialize and suffer a setback.

• Kain bursts into a swarm of bats,re-forming at his last checkpoint.

• Raziel becomes dissolute and isswept back to his last checkpointin the Spectral Realm.

COMBAT

COMBAT MODE

The combat system encouragesthe creative use of the characters’ coreattacks — slashes, lifts, slams, TKand dodging — enabling you tochoreograph your own combo attacksand develop your own uniquecombat style.

Kain and Raziel automatically entercombat mode when you press anyattack key while enemies are present.While in combat mode, the characterdraws his weapon and adoptsa combat stance while he moves.He remains in combat mode until allnearby enemies have been destroyed,or you manually exit combat modeby pressing the : key.

You can also manually enter combatmode by holding down the : key(though this is not required).The character remains in combatmode until you release the key.

TARGETING ENEMIESKain and Raziel do not lock onto asingle enemy during combat. Insteadthey automatically turn to attack thenearest threat, unless you indicate adifferent attack direction. To targeta specific enemy, maneuver Kainor Raziel in that enemy’s direction.

ATTACK TYPESSingle and Combination Attacks

Use the J, U and L keys to performsingle attacks. Create combosby linking different key pressesin sequence.

Slashing Attacks

Use the J key for slashing attacks,which you can link in sequenceto execute a three-attack comboon the ground or in mid-air.

Lift and Slam Attacks

Use the U key for lift attacksfrom the ground.

• Tap the U key to lift an enemyinto the air.

• Hold down the U key to liftthe enemy and jump up to follow it.

• While in mid-air, pressthe U key again for a powerfuldownward slam.

• Use lift attacks to set enemies upfor a TK-blast (L key) or mid-airslashing combos (J key).

TK IN COMBAT

Use the L key to launch Telekineticassaults during combat.

• Tap the L key to quickly blast awayan enemy. You can use Telekinesisas long as energy remains in theTK Meter.

• When playing as Kain, hold downthe L key to lift the enemy off theground, then release it to throwthe enemy. Use the movement orcursor keys before releasing the keyto hurl the enemy into deadly ordamaging obstacles, or to pull theenemy toward Kain to set up acombo attack. Kain will lose his TKhold after a short time if he doesn’tthrow the enemy.

• You can throw enemies onto spikes,into fire, into breakable objects,over ledges, and into architecturalobstacles. Some of these targets willbe fatal, others will inflict varyingdegrees of damage.

• Some enemies are invulnerableto TK attacks.

DODGINGUse the space bar or K key to evadeand maneuver around enemies.

• Use the movement or cursor keysto set a direction and press thespace bar or K key to dodge.

• To jump up while in combat mode,press the space bar or K keywhile standing still, or double-tapthe space bar or K key.

FINISHING MOVESWhen an enemy has been reduced to avulnerable state (stunned or otherwiseincapacitated), Kain and Raziel canfeed to recover their health, or finishthe victim with the Reaver to enhancethe blade’s combat function.

• To drink the victim’s bloodor devour its soul, hold downthe I key while near a vulnerableenemy.

• To perform a finishing movewith the Reaver, press the U keynear the victim.

REAVER ENHANCEMENTSAND SPELLS

Use the various Reaver enhancementsyou’ve collected for different combateffects. When the Reaver is fullycharged with its victims’ energy, itspotency is temporarily boosted.

When the Reaver Gauge is completelyfull, it glows to indicate that a ReaverSpell has been armed. The spell’seffect is determined by the selectedReaver enhancement, either inflictingdamage on multiple enemies ortemporarily embellishing thecharacter’s combat attributesin some way.

• To launch a Reaver Spell, hold downand then release the J key.

COLLECTABLES

During your journey you can collectBonus Items that increase your healthcapacity and TK power. Some items arehidden in arcane containers that mustbe shattered with the Reaver to releasethe treasures within. You can collectHealth Talismans, Telekinetic Runesand Arcane Tomes.

HEALTH TALISMANS

Each Talisman is broken into threefragments. The character’s healthcapacity increases one level each timehe completes a Talisman by collectingits three fragments. Each character canfind a total of 12 shards, for a potentialtotal of four complete health upgrades.

TELEKINETIC RUNES

Each Rune enlarges the character’sTK Meter, increasing his capacity to useTelekinesis. Each character can finda total of eight TK Runes.

ARCANE TOMES

You can unlock special bonus materialsby finding Arcane Tomes hiddenthroughout the game. When you finda Tome, approach it to collect it.Each character can find a totalof ten Arcane Tomes.

SPECIAL ATTACKS

Over the course of the game, Kain andRaziel earn experience based on howwell they perform in combat. Theirprogress is tallied by the Reaver Meteron the Status Screen, and is acceleratedbased on the complexity of the combosperformed and how often the ReaverGauge is built to a full charge.

As Kain and Raziel reach eachof the five combat experience levels,they are awarded a new Special Attack.Each attack earned is shownby a colored pip next to the ReaverMeter on the Status Screen.

Click on the right arrow at the topright of the Status Screen to open thesubscreen where the Special Attacksare stored, along with descriptionsand controls instructions (see page 21).

PERFORMING SPECIAL ATTACKSPulling off Special Attacks requirestiming, skill and practice.

• To execute a Special Attack, tapthe movement or cursor keysin the attack direction,and simultaneously pressthe appropriate attack key —slash (J key), slam (U key) or TK(L key) — for the desired attack.

There are five types of Special Attacks:

Devastating Strike

A powerful slam attack that bouncesthe enemy off the ground, setting it upfor a follow-up attack.

• Tap the movement or cursor keysin the attack direction andsimultaneously press the U key.

Rapid Attack

A vicious flurry of attacks unleashedby rapid key presses.

• Tap the movement or cursor keysin the attack direction andrepeatedly press the J key.

Air Strike

A powerful mid-air slam attackthat bounces the enemy highoff the ground.

• While in mid-air, tap the movementor cursor keys in the attackdirection and simultaneouslypress the U key.

Rapid Air Attack

A vicious mid-air flurry of attacksunleashed by rapid key presses.

• While in mid-air, tap the movementor cursor keys in the attackdirection and repeatedly pressthe J key.

Telekinetic Stasis

Briefly locks an enemy in mid-airwith TK while still leaving Kainor Raziel free to attack.

• Tap the movement or cursor keysin the attack direction andsimultaneously press the L key.

COMBAT BARRIERS

You may find yourself trapped incombat by physical obstacles ormagical forcefields that block your exit.You must destroy all the enemies in thearea before the barriers will be lifted.

SPELL CASTERSSome enemies cast offensive ordefensive spells on themselves andtheir comrades. It’s often wise to takeout the spell-casters in a group first toprevent them from aiding their allies.

Some spells you will encounter are:

• Amplify Damage — Used by theSarafan and Vampire Hunters toincrease the damage caused bytheir comrades. Indicated by a redglow on the enemy’s weapon.

• TK Shield — Used by VampireHunters and Revenants to protectthemselves from Telekineticassaults. Indicated by a purplish-blue glow on the affected enemy.

• Regeneration — Used by theSarafan and Vampire Hunters toheal their comrades during battle.Indicated by a whitish glow aroundthe healed enemy.

• Berserk — Used by the Sarafan(and occasionally Revenants) toamplify their battle fury, turningthe affected enemy into a ruthlessopponent. Indicated by a reddish-orange effect on the enemy.

• Glyph Shield — Used by theSarafan, Vampire Hunters andCenobites as a protective shield that

repels attacks. Indicated by a ringof glowing Runes around theaffected enemy. You must destroythe shield before you can damageyour opponent.

• Fire Shield — Employed by someanimated Statues, the shield inflictsmassive damage on an attacker whostrikes the enemy while it is active.Indicated by a fiery orangeforcefield around the enemy.

• Summoning — Some enemies cansummon other creatures to do theirbidding. Summoners’ sorcery failswhen they become too wounded.

ARCHONS

These spectral foes latch onto Razielwhen they attack, siphoning his energythrough a spirit-tether. Raziel mustcounterattack or retreat to escapebeing completely drained.

TENTACLESThese minions of the Elder God striveto ensnare the characters. Kain andRaziel must attack rapidly to escapetheir grasp. When Raziel is in theMaterial Realm, Tentacles will try todrag him back into the spirit world.
