denly fell into the hole of a hollow tree. They poked m vainto get it out, when one of their number. Wen Yen Beh,had the bright idea of pouring in some water. He ran to geta pail, filled the hole with water, and the ball was easily se-cured. He later on became a ruler.

This time the boy went to the bridger;ght after his supper, and spent the night there ! When theSag; came ar dawn he was greatly pleased to find Djang Liangthere ahead of him. and gave him instruction of such valuethat when he grew up he became a reat general.

So,he got down and crawled between the legs of the youngman ! Han Hsin lost face so he hac to retire, but not for long,as an enemy lord soon attacked his overlord and he wassummoned to help. He soon led the army to victor/ andwas raised to a very high position. Then, saying that hewould rather be the friend than the enemy of Hsiao Nien,he ?ent for him and made him ruler over a small section ofthe country.

HOW THE FROGS GOT THEIR CROAKAn old man and his wife were walking over a bridge.

Stooping to look over the railing, the woman drooped hermelon (t-wa) and in trying to get it back the man lost hssstaff ("Gwer" in N. China). Then in attempting the rescueof his staff the man fell into the water. The woman triedto save him and also fell in and both were drowned. Thegods in pity changed them into frogs, and now the old womancries "Gwa, gwa, I want my gwa," while her husband hoarselyshouts, "Gwer, gwer, gwer." The combined sounds come tobe "Gwa-gwer, gwa-jwer. gwer- gwer.-gwer, gwa-s;wer-r-r" tothe end of time.
