New Manufacturing Equipment Unveiled During Ribbon Cutting and Open House
Event promotes PATH programs at Lehigh Carbon Community College On April 20, Lehigh Carbon Community College hosted a ribbon cutting and open house to showcase new equipment that will be used by students in the advanced manufacturing training program. The college’s state-of-the-art manufacturing training facility and newest pieces of training equipment were on display during the event. LCCC’s industry partners and PATH advisory board members were also recognized for their dedication to supporting the development of the PATH manufacturing program which included: B. Braun Medical Inc; Coca-Cola North America Group; Enterprise Systems Partners, Inc; Fisher Clinical Services, Inc; Just Born Quality Confections; Lutron Electronics Co., Inc; Mack Trucks, Inc; Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc; and Walmart eCommerce. The new equipment was purchased through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Pennsylvania’s Advanced Training and Hiring (PATH) program. The enhanced training lab will enable students to develop the technical skills sought by businesses in the areas of industrial, electrical, mechanical, Programmable Logic Controller and robotics. LCCC offers short-term certificates in advanced manufacturing training that feature the new equipment. Courses are offered through a hybrid of online and hands-on instruction, offering maximum flexibility to participants in the program. Alumni Food Drive Successful LCCC’s Alumni Association invited faculty and staff to participate in the fifth annual food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. On April 15, Paul Lynch, director of Second Harvest Food Bank, revealed the results of the food drive in which LCCC came in third overall for donations among the other participating colleges. Lynch also gave representatives from each of the participating colleges a tour of the organization’s new facility in Nazareth, Pa. The food drive results were as follows:

Since the launch, the College Alumni Food Drive Challenge has collected a total of 83,185 pounds. This equates to more than 69,320 meals. Second Harvest distributes nearly 7 million pounds of food and grocery products to low-income families and individuals each year. The organization also participates in the SUNshine Boxes program which is distributed to over 1,800 senior citizens each month and the Backpack Buddies program which provides children a weekly package of kid-friendly food to supplement their meals.

Justice Society Hosts Panel
The LCCC Criminal Justice Society (CJA) student group hosted a criminal justice career panel with the Career Development office. The panelists included representatives from the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehigh County Department of Corrections, Lehigh County Adult Probation, Monroe County Correctional Facility, the Allentown Rescue Mission and Abraxas Academy. The panelists provided information about their agency and careers, followed by a formal question and answer discussion for students.
Pantano Scholarship Awarded
Dr. James and Penny Pantano held a private luncheon at Lehigh Country Club to award scholarships to Ryan Dzojko, majoring in computer and information systems; Breanna Quinn, majoring
in occupational therapy assistant; and Michael Lackman, majoring in health information technology. The students each received a $1,500 scholarship. Pantano scholarships are awarded for the spring semester to continuing students within Lehigh, Carbon and Schuylkill counties who show academic promise and demonstrate community involvement. They must be enrolled in the School of Healthcare Sciences, Mathematics and Science or Technology.
NursingABC Scholarship Congratulations to nursing student Josue Pimentel, who received a $1,000 scholarship from NursingABC. NursingABC provides academic preparation to students applying to nursing programs. The company awarded scholarships to only four schools nationwide this year, including LCCC. The scholarship was presented to the LCCC Nursing program in recognition for its commitment to non-traditional adult learners. Josue was selected by the nursing faculty. LCCC students Trisha Bankowski of Germansville, Pa., and Samantha Eden of Slatington, Pa., have been named members of the 2015-2016 All-Pennsylvania Academic Team, which is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the Coca-Cola Corporation, the State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges. Trisha Bankowski is a general studies major andplans to continue her education at East Stroudsburg University this fall, majoring in public health. She plans on joining the Peace Corps. Bankowski is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. In addition to her studies, she is a customer service representative at Wells Fargo Bank
and volunteers at The Sanctuary at Haafsville, a no-kill animal shelter in Fogelsville. Samantha Eden majors in psychology and plans to continue her education at West Chester University this fall. She is a member of LCCC’s student government association, having served as the programming chair and currently as the vice president. Eden is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Psi Beta. She has worked as a peer mentor and student worker at the Wellness Center at LCCC. Selection is competitive and students must have completed at least 36 credits at a community college and earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus. An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process. Each member of the All-Pennsylvania Academic Team receives a full, two-year scholarship to any of the universities in PASSHE and competes at the national level for scholarships from the All-USA Academic Team and the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team.

LCCC Director of Athletics, Andrew Johnson, was named president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC). The EPAC was formed in 2012 and is comprised of two-year colleges in Pennsylvania that compete in Region 19 of the NJCAA. As president, Johnson will provide leadership for the member colleges as well as serve on the executive committee. Johnson has been with LCCC since 2015. He has led several teams to success throughout his career.

LCCC’s Athletic Director Named EPAC President
Jennifer Kalenkoski, of Shenandoah, Pa., has won a national office in the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Kalenkoski, a first-year ADN student at LCCC and current president of SNAP (Student Nurses Association of PA), will take on the position of Breakthrough to Nursing-Director. She will be addressing the adequacy of health care services for minority group members, which include:• The need to increase the number of minority group health care providers.• The need to provide opportunities for minority nursing students to develop leadership skills.• The need for the nursing education system to be more responsive to the needs of the minority group students. “I am very proud of Jen’s dedication to our chapter and to nursing. She has proven herself to be an outstanding student leader. Her election to this position provides our chapter, program and school with national recognition,” states Gail Cummings, associate professor of psychiatric nursing and SNAP faculty advisor.
Student Wins National Office
LCCC Student Ambassador Iulia Tibrea has been volunteering with Teach RWANDA, an organization that builds schools and provides supplies for poor children in Rwanda. With the help of the Intercultural Student Association at LCCC, Teach RWANDA is having a fundraiser on Saturday, July 30, and will be collecting donations on campus.
