Legislators Visit Schools and Homes in Education Afterschool Program

LCCC’s Carbon County SHINE program, located at Carbon Career and Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe, hosted U.S. Representative Louis Barletta and Pennsylvania senators and representatives, who were learning about STEM learning at the after-school and summer program. Congressman Barletta was joined by Senators Ryan Aument, John Yudichak and Art Haywood; Representatives Mindy Fee and Doyle Heffley; the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network (PSAYDN) and the Pennsylvania Afterschool Caucus leadership team to view a holistic approach to STEM education. They visited with after-school students, parents, and school district and county leadership. Attendees learned about the seamless transition experienced by children from the school-day program to the after-school program. They also met Mr. Robotic, a five-foot-tall robot created by middle school students, who demonstrates the role STEM plays in the curriculum. Representing LCCC were Dr. Tom Meyer, vice president of Academic Services and Student Development and Rachel Strucko, director of the Carbon and Schuylkill SHINE programs. The Lehigh Carbon Community College Carbon and Schuylkill SHINE 21st Century After-School Program is a community success story. Its theme lies in how a community’s grassroots prevention efforts through a quality after-school program, along with effective early childhood programs, are increasing educational attainment, preventing juvenile crime and having a life-long impact on the communities and families it serves.

LCCC has received funding of more than $35,000 from the Northeast Regional Key of Community Services for Children (CSC), that will help practitioners in early learning programs take credential courses and individual professional development workshops. This award supports professional development of practitioners in early childhood teacher education who are seeking to complete their Child Development Associate (CDA) or director credentials, which helps to maintain the profession’s high quality. By developing and enhancing the skills of practitioners, the CSC helps to ensure the high quality of teacher education programs and childcare facilities in the area. More information about Community Services for Children and the Northeast Regional Key can be found at www.cscinc.org.

The team members for the Success, Engagement, Education, Determination [SEED] program, now in its second year, would like to thank all for continued support and assistance with SEED. From the mentors and coaches, to the faculty who allowed students to attend their credit/noncredit classes, your efforts are paving the way for all individuals to be productive and purposeful in society. As we continue to move forward with the program, the team looks forward to continued opportunities to make SEED grow even stronger, planting the seeds of success across the nation. Through SEED, students have overcome anxiety, social isolation, self-deprecation, lack of familial/social support, and significant disabilities in math/anxiety. Students are achieving entrance into the veterinary technician program and earning 4.0 GPA’s in college-level work. SEED offered individuals with significant disabilities, who needed vocational training and wanted the college experience, an opportunity to achieve the goals many take for granted. SEED is opening the door of an individualized college-level training certificate for those with intellectual disabilities and the like. Our data has shown our retention and success rates exceeding the national standard by over 30 percent. The Success, Engagement, Education, Determination [SEED] program started in summer 2015 with a $150,000 grant from the PA Developmental Disability Council.

Transportation Institute Hosts

Meeting

On August 3, LCCC hosted 80 individuals from government, transportation and logistics entities for the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission’s third Freight Advisory Board Meeting, held in the Community Services Center. Following the event, the guests had the opportunity to visit the CDL range and view a vehicle demonstration. The advisory board, funded in part by the federal government FAST Act program (Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act), was created in 2016 to bring regional stakeholders together to study and advise on the development of a functional and efficient freight system in the Lehigh Valley, now and for the future. Representatives from LCCC’s Transportation Institute are participating on the advisory board. Dante Staciokas, program director, authored and presented a white paper for the board analyzing CDL issues and opportunities for the region.
