THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Book of the Chronicles Chapter 36 beginning at the 14th verse

All the leading priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place; but they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, till the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, till there was no remedy. Therefore he brought up against them the king of the Chalde'ans, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged; he gave them all into his hand. And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate it kept sabbath, to fulfil seventy years. THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Ephesians Chapter 2 beginning at the 4th verse. God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God -- not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

At that time the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a multitude was coming to him, Jesus said to Philip, "How are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?" This he said to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, "There is a

lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are they among so many?" Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place; so the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the fragments left over, that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten. When the people saw the sign which he had done, they said, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world!" Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Greetings

The Fourth Sunday in Lent is traditionally known as Mothering Sunday.

Amid all of the changes we are experiencing we may easily note that the observance of this day with such a caption is going out of vogue.

This in indeed a pity. Mothering Sunday is totally different in character from the modern invention of Mother’s Day.

It carries the Mothers Day theme and more for indeed there is a deep spiritual and theological notion to Mothering Sunday.

This day reminds us of the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of all faithful. The spiritual motherhood of the mother of Jesus is hailed in the church and acknowledged in the hymn texts of the Hymnal (CPWI)

Shall we not love thee, mother dear, whom Jesus loves so well? And, to his glory, year by year, thy joy and honour tell.

In the Acts of the Apostles, we see the Blessed Mother together with the Apostles in the Upper Room after our Lord's Ascension.

She is present on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came down mightily and the Church became a true and historical reality in the world.

Which brings us to another Mothering Sunday theme, that as Church as Mother.

It was St. Cyprian of Carthage who famously said, “you cannot have God for your Father unless you have the church for your Mother.”

Jean Calvin in The Institutes was known to have written in relation to christians and the church

‘that they may be guided by her motherly care until they mature and at last reach the goal of faith…so that, for those to whom he is Father the church may also be Mother.’(Gal. 4:26). (Inst. 4.1.1).

In the past there was the tradition of visiting the mother church of the Diocese on Mothering Sunday.

There is of course in Mothering Sunday the role that natural and adoptive mothers play and have played in our lives.

We thank God today for all mothers.

We offer a special prayer for mothers who seek in the midst of tremendous difficulty to raise their children, that even with scant resources they may bring bring their young ones to know and love God.

Red grapes are famous for r e s v e r a t r o l , a n antioxidant, but they only produce it in response to a FUNGAL infection during their growth.

One of the world’s most expensive food items is made from bird saliva. Bird’s nest soup is made from edible nest of the cave swiftlet. It is made

entirely out of the bird’s saliva and is high in calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.

Rosemary oils can be used as a natural meat preservative. In natural preservatives, essential oils research has presented great advances in their usage; their compounds are used to reduce microbial and chemical spoilage.

More than 90 percent of all soybeans grown in the United States are genetically modified (GM) for herbicide resistance.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the antioxidant activity of oregano is between three and 20 times higher than that of any other herb.

The chemicals in garlic are so potent that you can suffer severe burns just by placing a garlic clove against your skin long enough.
