CoachJimGraverstartedtheLeoballrollingin1957andchancesarethatballwasabaseball.GraverwasthebaseballcoachoftheAbingtonHighSchoolinPennsylvania,USAandanactivememberoftheGlensideLionsClub.WiththehelpfromfellowLion,WilliamErnest,thefirstLeoClub,theAbingtonHighSchoolLeoClub,wascharteredonDecember5,1957.LeoClubofacronym-Leadership,Equality,Opportunity-andtheychosetheirschoolcolors,maroonandgoldtoserveastheLeoclub.Later,EqualitywaschangedtoExperience.InOctober1967,theboardofdirectorsofLionsClubsInternational(LCI)adoptedtheLeoClubProgramasanofficialprogramoftheassociation.Bythattimetheprogramhadgrowntoover200clubsin18countriesandbecomeanofficialyouthprogramofLCI.Inthefollowingyear,theLeoprogramspreadin48countrieswith918clubsbytheendof1968.TheLeoClubprogramhasbeengrowingstrongforover50years.Communityserviceremainsthecornerstoneoftheprogram.LiketheirLioncounterparts,Leoclubmembersenjoyservingtheirneighborsandwatchingpositiveresultsunfold.ThestatedpurposeofLeoClubis-To promote service activities among the youth of the communitywhichwill develop the individual qualities ofleadership,ExperienceandOpportunity.Touniteitsmembersinfriendship,fellowshipandmutualunderstanding.TherearetwoclubtracksintheLeoClubprogram.Alpha&Omega.

Designedforyouthbetweentheagesof12and18,thistrackfocusesontheindividualandsocialdevelopmentofteensandpre-teens.YouthwhojoinAlphaclubshavefun,makenewfriendsandexperiencetherewardsofservingothers.Designedforyouthbetweentheagesof18and30,thistrackfocusesonthepersonalandprofessionaldevelopmentofyoungadults.Omegaclubshelpmembersfurtherdeveloptheirleadershipskillsandpreparethemforalifetimeofcommunityinvolvementandcontributiontosociety.

TheLeoClubprogram’smaximumageofmembershipis30yearsofage,thoughitisasthediscretiontheLionsdistricttoenforcetheyoungerupper-agelimitsforOmegaLeoClubs.TherearenomajordifferencesintheoperationsorlogisticsofAlphaandOmegaLeoClubs.
