Beautiful blue-violet tanzanite is a relative newcomer to the gem market. It was discovered in 1967 in Tanzania, and subsequently popularized by Tiffany & Co.

Contributing to tanzanite’s rarity is the fact that the mines in the Merelani region of Tanzania are the only known source for this jewel in the entire world! Most other gems, even the very rare, have more than one origin.

Tanzanite ranges in color from pale lavender to deep cobalt blue, and the finest specimens are known to have a red flash. According to local legend, Tanzanite was discovered when a lightning strike near the Merelani Hills set surrounding grasslands afire in an intense blaze; the heat of the fire transformed the color of the naturally greenish-brown stone into the stunning blues and violets for which it is known.

Nearly all tanzanite is heated to 600 degrees Celsius to reveal its vibrant color; but heating does not diminish the investment value of this gem. Because tanzanite typically grows in large crystals, it is possible to find gems of awesome size, vivid saturation, and no inclusions whatsoever.

A fine Swiss watch can last for generations and still be running strong 100 years from now. Everyone considers cost, especially in this economy, but in the long run it is much more economical to buy a good Swiss watch that will last for years, rather than buying cheaper watches again and again. Unlike iPhones and BMWs, whose value drops as soon as you leave the store, a fine vintage Swiss watch may even gain in value over time.

Caring for the timepieces is important if you want them to hold their value. Just like a car, a Swiss watch needs to get a tune up for optimal performance. A full service is recommended every 3-5 years for maintenance. Our master watchmaker will perform a full clean and overhaul, which entails dismantling the timepiece to examine the movement and all parts. An estimate will be provided for any worn parts that need to be replaced. Lubrication, pressure tests, adjustments and regulation of the movement will be performed. We will also include a full exterior refinish, buffing and polishing the watch case and bracelet to look their very best.
