Oral Exam Format

• Groups of 3 (or 4) students will be examined at the same time for 10 minutes

• Come only for the time that is given to you – please come on time

Oral exam will have 3 parts: • Part A – Jazz Chants and Tongue-twisters• Part B – Autobiography• Part C – Opinions and Descriptions

Part A: Reading (Jazz Chant, tongue twister)Each student will take turns reading a jazz chant and a tongue twister.

Part B: Autobiography Each student is given a question to ask another studente.g. “What was your favourite book when you were young?” (past tense) e.g. “What do you hope to do after you graduate?” (future tense)e.g. “What do you usually eat for breakfast?” (present tense)e.g. “I hope you don’t mind my asking, but have you ever…?” (polite question). The student who answers the question is then given a different question to ask the next student, and so on.

Part C: Opinions, Describing things

Each student is given an opinion question to ask another student - “If I had a million dollars….?” (conditional), “Pardon me, what do you think of..?” (polite questions).

Each student will be asked to describe something – an object in the room, what another student is wearing, a member of their family (family, occupations), their hometown.

what language she’s speaking

or trying to speak.

Autobiography

Past Tense: (Simple Past, Past Progressive, Past Perfect)

With a partner, talk about:

(a) what high school you went to,

(b) what you were doing in 2010,

(c) what sports had you played before you came to university,

(d) what books you had read before you started high school,

(e) where your family was living when you were 10 years old,

(f) what hobbies you had when you were young,

(g) what food you hated when you were young,

(h) where your family usually went for summer vacations when you were young.

Present Tense:

With a partner, talk about:

(a) what time you usually go to bed,

(b) what you eat for breakfast,

(c) what you do in your spare time,

(d) what you do on the weekends,

(e) what your family usually does for Spring Festival

(f) what music you listen to,

(g) what books you read,

(h) what television programs you watch.

Autobiography

Future Tense: (simple future, future progressive, future perfect)

With a partner, talk about:

(a) what you will do for summer vacation,

(b) what you will do after you graduate,

(c) what you will be doing in 2018,

(d) what you will have done before you graduate,

(e) what you will be doing in your third year of university,

(f) where you will be living after you find a job,

(g) what you will have done before you retire,

(h) what you will eat for dinner tonight.

Present perfect, polite questions

With a partner, ask and answer polite questions using “Have you ever…” and the topics below:

(a) visit Shanghai,

(b) ride a subway,

(c) travel to another country,

(d) write a letter or send a gift to someone you liked,

(e) see a real elephant,

(f) copy a classmate’s homework,

(g) lose something very valuable,

(h) hit someone.

Opinions, Describing Things

Conditional: “If I had a million dollars…”

With a partner, ask and give opinions based on the conditional:

(a) have a million dollars, do

(b) buy a house, city

(c) travel, country

(d) can meet, any famous person

(e) can change, anything about yourself

(f) find a camera on the ground, do

(g) learn, musical instrument
