3. Which of the effects (A/B/C) is most appropriate in describing Hong Kong’s culture today? Why do you think so?

• Suggested Answer:

• The most appropriate description is C because Hong Kong culture combines the characteristics of Chinese culture and Western culture.

• For instance, a lot of Hong Kong slang ( 俚語 ) originally comes from the translation ( 翻譯 ) of Western vocabulary. For example, carefree ( 茄呢啡 ), snooker ( 士碌架 ), fluke ( 符碌 ), etc.

• More examples can be found in local cuisine ( 烹調風格 ). In egg custard tarts, for example, the pastry ( 餡餅皮 ) is made of lard ( 豬油 ) (a Chinese cooking method) instead of butter, and for the preparation of steak ( 牛排 ), soy sauce ( 豉油 ) (Chinese seasoning) is used to marinate ( 浸泡 ) the meat.
