The buzz at Barefoot Consultants has been incredible! And I’m very excited that you’re excited. ☺ One member’s email to me, kind of, sums up what everyone’s been writing in to say… “Winton, it feels so good to finally be taking control of my earnings!” Listen, it’s only gonna get better and better as we go along. Introduction

Sometimes our skills have been so buried, unrecognized, under-appreciated, or just plain unrewarded that it is hard for us to recognize them. This process, that we will lead you through today, will be very helpful in probing all the nooks and crannies in your brain in order to come up with a group of possibilities that will delight your soul! A few thoughts before you begin… This section involves writing, and we’ve found that handwriting works best. (You might want to read this blog post to understand why: http://lifehacker.com/5738093/why-you-learn-more-effectively-by-writing-than-typing) So, even if you are completely comfortable filling in these responses on your computer, please do it by hand on a printout of this document. You can also carry the document with you. Some of your best ideas occur when you are away from your computer. Doing these exercises in different settings will yield more insightful results. Remember, this is your process and neatness DOESN’T count! Write in the margins, on the back, change your mind, have a breakthrough!… This is your process and your future!

Step 1-- Activate…Your key to opening the door! (Part 1) In this step, you answer a lot of questions designed to help you remember skills and abilities you may have forgotten or might be blind to. Some of the questions might seem redundant… they are not… they are designed to help you dig deeper on an issue. Answer the ones that seem redundant from a deeper place in your psyche. Step 2—Broaden… Looking outside yourself. (Part 2 & 3) After you have answered all the questions, we want you to take a look as some of the links we have provided. They are links to lists of skills that are in demand on many of the job networks. If you are a master of a skill, write it down and put an “A” next to it. If you have the skill but are not yet a master, place a “B” next to it. If you think you could cultivate a skill, but are neither a master of it nor well-practiced in it, put a “C” Step 3—Concentrate… A Direction Emerges (Part 4) One of the things we see that stops so many global earners in their tracks is “paralysis of analysis.” They capture the vision and get bogged down in the detailed analysis and somehow exit the process and gravitate back to the couch and in front of the TV. Don’t let that happen to you! Don’t attempt to boil the ocean. Take everything you’ve learned and boil it down to the “Concentrate” section. Slash and burn! Make arbitrary decisions. This is the time to eliminate the marginal opportunities and focus on the options, skills, desires, and dreams that will bring out your best.

A Word About Multiple Streams of Income Many Barefoot Consultants and others earning abroad find it effective to have multiple streams of income. It is not uncommon to see someone who does proofreading and editing on Elance, and then writes a monthly article for a publication and helps a business client back in the states put together a new product launch. As you go through this process, you are not looking for the “perfect” thing… you are looking for possibilities. At the end of this process, we want to have a “starting point” of several skills to explore. As we work through these lessons, your progress will be your guide as to whether you are on track or not. Be sure to keep in mind that while some skills may seem mutually exclusive, each skill might be completely appropriate across a couple of streams of income. To do this, we want to approach the problem “indirectly.” So often, people “jump to the conclusion” that they have no skills to put on the global market. In our experience, as long as you can read, respond to email, and fill out forms on the web, you can earn a global income.

What Are The Skills You Never Knew You Had? You want to look closely at the skills you use “outside” your career. These are some of the most interesting for increasing your global earning power. Especially if you are mid-career or late-career, you probably have interests outside the workplace that you really enjoy.




For example, we know a “Soccer Mom” who didn’t work in the traditional sense although her daily schedule was as packed as any senior executive. She was involved in the band at the high school. She could plan great birthday parties or bowling tournaments. She was great doing all of the different kinds of things that moms get involved in. In fact, she was so good at it that a lot of the moms that did have careers turned to her quite frequently to do this. She never did it for money of course, but she was just great at coordinating things, keeping people up-to-date, getting schedules down, getting people to commit to dates, and all of that kind of stuff. When the ability to do work over services like Elance and Guru.com came along, she actually began putting herself into some of the networks as a project management consultant. What this means is she became a person that could take on any kind of small project. It could be developing a brochure. It could be planning for a trade show. It could be doing a simple construction project. Her jobs included anything that has a flow of activities over time, where you have multiple people involved, where they have to be kept up-to–date, and where they have to commit to completing tasks based on a schedule. She now makes a living doing different kinds of projects for people because her organizational skills are so good. Of course, she doesn’t have what I would call the content knowledge. She is not a developer, so she doesn’t know how to build a building or that kind of thing. But, the people that put these projects up for bid are the ones that do have that knowledge. They are able to provide her all of the knowledge she needs just to manage the content piece.

This systematic approach is suggested to reduce the chaos that you may be experiencing or feeling. It is designed to trigger your thinking and your planning. By reviewing your strengths and weaknesses and exploring your passions and talents, you should have some inclination of what career or income-producing activity you would like to pursue. You will know and feel whether a job activity is good for you, but you also need to be prepared to explore new avenues that may not have the comfort factor of the skills you have become comfortable with. If the income activity you have selected to pursue is closely related to your past income activity, the move will be less stressful.
