Lesson Plan # 9 Lesson: What does not belong? Grade Intended: Kindergarten Length: 15-20 minutes Academic Standard: K.3.1 Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, and other attributes. Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group. K.4.2 Identify and describe different kinds of jobs that people do and the tools or equipment used in these jobs. Performance Objective: Given five pictures, the students will identify the two pictures that do not belong with 80% 'accuracy. Assessment: Students will be given a worksheet with ten pictures, split in two groups. In the first group the students will be expected to circle the items that a firefighter would use, and in the second group they will be expected to circle the items that a police officer would use. They will then turn in this worksheet. Advanced Preparation by Teacher: Prior to teaching this lesson the teacher will need to teach students about firefighters and police and the equipment that they use to do their jobs. He/she will also need to make copies of the worksheet in advance, and make sure that they have posters of equipment as well. Procedure Introduction/Motivation: "Do you remember how we have talked about police officers and firefighters? (Bloom's Knowledge) (Verbal Linguistic Intelligence) We even had them come to our classroom to show us what kinds of equipment they have to use to do their jobs. Well today we are going to learn about how we can group these objects into similar categories. Step-by-Step: Review with students what tools each job would use. Lesson Plan # 9

Lesson: What does not belong?

Grade Intended: Kindergarten

Length: 15-20 minutes

Academic Standard:

K.3.1 Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, and other attributes.Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group.

K.4.2 Identify and describe different kinds of jobs that people do and the tools orequipment used in these jobs.

Performance Objective:

Given five pictures, the students will identify the two pictures that do not belongwith 80% 'accuracy.

Assessment:

Students will be given a worksheet with ten pictures, split in two groups. In thefirst group the students will be expected to circle the items that a firefighter would use,and in the second group they will be expected to circle the items that a police officerwould use. They will then turn in this worksheet.

Advanced Preparation by Teacher:

Prior to teaching this lesson the teacher will need to teach students aboutfirefighters and police and the equipment that they use to do their jobs. He/she will alsoneed to make copies of the worksheet in advance, and make sure that they haveposters of equipment as well.

Procedure

Introduction/Motivation: "Do you remember how we have talked about policeofficers and firefighters? (Bloom's Knowledge) (Verbal Linguistic Intelligence) We evenhad them come to our classroom to show us what kinds of equipment they have to useto do their jobs. Well today we are going to learn about how we can group these objectsinto similar categories.

Step-by-Step:

• Review with students what tools each job would use. (Bloom'sKnowledge)(Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence)

• Show students a picture of each tool, and have them tell you if it issomething that a firefighter would use or something a cop would use.(Visual-Spatial Intelligence)

• Pass out worksheet. (attached)

• Tell students that you want them to circle the pictures of tools that afirefighter would use and those that a police officer would use. (Bloom'sComprehension) (Logical Mathematical Intelligence)

Closure: "Can someone tell me one thing that they saw on their worksheet thatdid not belong with the other objects? How did you know it did not belong? I am reallyproud of how you guys did today; tomorrow we will be taking our field trip to the bakery.I hope you behave just as good tomorrow as you did today."

Adaptations/Enrichment:

Theadvanced student will be given the opportunity to label each tool, as well ascircle them. For the student with a learning disability, they will have the teacher walkthem through what they are to do for the worksheet.

Self-Reflection:

What went well? What should I do differently next time I teach this lesson? Didthe students have a problem picking out the items that did not belong in the group?Should I give the student more objects to choose from next time? The next time I do thislesson, would it be more beneficial if I just showed the students pictures of the tools andhad them name them and tell me when they see a picture that does not belong?
