Math Night sky math games -

Make your own felt night

sky or use printable stars

for these early math

games.

Planet patterns - Use the

printable pattern cards to

explore patterning. Chil-

dren can create their own

patterns, extend your pat-

terns, or copy patterns.

Rocket puzzle math - Cre-

ate a number rocket using

foam sheets and magnets.

Practice sorting in different

ways before putting the

puzzle back together.

Sorting stars - Sort star ma-

nipulatives by color and

size. The printable stars can

also be used.

Roll and graph planets -

Print out the planet graph,

along with the planet cu-

be. Roll the cube and then

record the planet on the

graph. Stop when one

planet “wins”.

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science Fizzing planets - Create

baking soda planets and

then have fun dissolving

them with this science ex-

periment. (TF)

DIY Constellations - Chil-

dren can make their own

constellations using tooth-

picks and marshmallows

(or toothpicks and

Styrofoam balls). Use num-

ber cards to challenge the

kids to make a constella-

tion with that many “stars”.

Planet hop - Use chalk out-

side or paper taped to the

ground inside. Draw the

planets in order and label

them. Let kids hop from

planet to planet, or give

kids clues to a specific

planet and have them find

the matching planet.

What’s in outer space? -

Shared writing of a list of

things you might see in

outer space (add pictures

and let kids use this list for

writing activities through-

out the week)

Making craters - After

reading about how craters

are made, place some

flour in a pan. Experiment

with making craters by

dropping marbles or rocks

into the flour. See how

throwing and different

heights affect the craters.

Literacy Night sky letters - Create

letters using play dough or

paint.

Star segmentation - Work

on concept of a word.

Place star manipulatives in

front of the child in a line

from left to right. Say a

sentence out loud, and

have the child push one

star forward for each word

said.

Star letter making - Use star

manipulatives to form let-

ters. Use star stickers to do

the same thing on paper,

as an alternative.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

rhyming - Create a chart

for the poem, and then

add printable rhyming

cards (or make up the

rhymes with the kids).

Name rocket ships - Cut

up construction paper

squares, one for each let-

ter in the child’s name.

Help write the letters on

the squares. Children use

the squares to make their

names. Add a triangle on

top and let the kids draw

an environment to show

the rocket blasting off. You

can see an example on

this name post.

Other Moon craft - Explore the

surface of the moon

with this three-

dimensional craft. (TF)

Outer space play dough -

Set out marbles or planet

balls, glow sticks, star ma-

nipulatives, and black play

dough for kids to create

their own solar system. (TF)

Coffee filter planets -

Use coffee filters, mark-

ers, and a spray bottle

of water to create the

solar system.

Glowing galaxy water

bin - Make a space-

themed water bin with

colored water, glow

sticks, etc.

Starry night glitter art -

Create a starry night

scene with straw paint-

ing.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

Math

Number cards - Use the printable

numbers to practice counting,

number identification, and nu-

merical order. Add marbles or

planet toys for one-to-one corre-

spondence.

Star patterns - Use star manipula-

tives or printable star cards to

make patterns.

Literacy

Starry night writing tray - Place

black sand and glitter in a shallow

tray. Add stars and marbles

(optional) to make a space-

themed sensory tray. Use printa-

ble letter cards as guides for let-

ters to practice in the tray.

Planet word making - Use mag-

netic letters, letter tiles, or other

alphabet manipulatives to make

planet words.

Science

Order the planets - Place non-

fiction books about the planets in

a basket. Include photos of the

solar system, along with printable

planet cards. Children can place

the planets in the correct order.

Sensory

Space Sensory Bin - Fill a sensory

bin with colorful rice and space

themed toys. Be sure to include

measuring spoons and cups. (TF)

Block Play

Design a rocket - Use wooden

blocks or LEGO bricks to make

rockets. (TF)

Build a space station - Use

blocks to create a space sta-

tion. Add astronaut-related

toys for imaginative play

alongside the building.

Arts and Crafts

DIY solar system - Draw with chalk

on black paper to make their own

mini solar systems. (TF)

Water resist night sky - Use crayons

or pastels to draw stars, the moon,

or planets. Go back with water-

colors and paint over the crayon

drawings.
