Project LifesaverBy Melissa Stemp, BPI Social Worker
I’m sure that many of you have asked this same question about your loved one who may have a cognitive impairment and wanders … “What can I do to keep them safe?” The idea of them wandering away from home or wandering away from us while in the community is a frightening thought. “What will we do?” and
“How will we find them?”are questions that run through our minds. Knowing that there are several things that we can do, security measures that we can put in place, provides some relief and a sense of security that we would not have otherwise.
Last Fall, I reached out to the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department to inquire about obtaining a radio frequency location device, on behalf of one of the family’s that BPI serves. One of our participants had started wandering and their loved one was concerned about maintaining their safety. Sheriff Schmidt recognized the need for this type of service and agreed to pursue purchasing this program and making it available to our community. Sheriff Schmidt has since worked through the process of having several of his staff complete the necessary training to be able to use this program called Project Lifesaver.
Project Lifesaver is an “organization that provides law enforcement, fire/rescue, and caregivers with a program designed to protect, and when necessary, quickly locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to the life threatening behavior of wandering (www.projectlifesaver.org).” This is accomplished through transmitting radio frequencies and location with devices that law enforcement use in conjunction with a device that your loved one would wear.
With this technology, the possibility of finding someone that has wandered away increases tremendously. “The search times for certified Project Lifesaver agencies have been reduced from hours, potentially days, down to minutes. Recovery times for Project Lifesaver agencies average 30 minutes, which is 95% less time than standard operations without Project Lifesaver (www.projectlifesaver.org).” The Bennington County Sheriff’s Department is still in the process of making this invaluable service available to our community.
Bennington Project Independence is excited to announce that we will be hosting an informational session about this program with the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department in the near future! This session will be held at Bennington Project Independence. We will be discussing this program as well as other measures you can put in place, in an effort to keep your loved one safe. If you are interested in attending please contact Melissa Stemp at 802-442-8136 x208. We will notify you when we have scheduled the session!

July 2019Bennington Project Independence
Every July, we celebrate our country’s spirit of independence. At BPI, every day we do our best to help people achieve their own personal sense of independence.
It’s easy to take for granted the simple things in life. Being able to do things ourselves or make our own choices, regardless of the physical, emotional or memory challenges that we may face, is essential to our
personal sense of independence and wellbeing. You can give an older person or younger adult with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the simple things in life and experience that sense of independence and personal wellbeing by making a charitable donation to
Bennington Project Independence, Adult Day Service today.
Giving The Gift of Independence...
Please give to BPI Todayand help our Participants celebrate that spirit of
independence!
