GOD ‘DISEMBARKED’...IN OUR ‘HOMELESSNESS’ AS HE BROUGHT PEACE AND BLESSING...

Let Us Bring the

Faith Home

A blessed 2019 to all!

We pray & worship.

We are a Priestly community.

Our direction for 2019– New Year Be nourished by the Word...Read the Word of God daily, Each ONE, Take TWO!....Each of us should invite/bring 2 people to church, and Be the Eucharist...When we come to church, smile! Be hospitable and ‘welcome

home’ everyone you meet.

To our Parishioners, Friends and Benefactors, Feast of the Holy Family! One Parish, One Family...Let our families be at home. Let us through the intercession of St. Lorenzo the Family Man, model our families by the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary & Joseph. We begin the year by continuing and embracing two very important endeavors in our parish. The first is ‘becoming and being church’ through our GRACE program —-the Generous Response According to Christ’s Embrace. Let us count our blessings and live a life thanking God for all our blessings. Second, is our quest to become a Diocesan Shrine. Our Shrinehood committee has worked tirelessly to make this dream into a reality. Let us continue to promote our dream, invite others to join us, continue to fervently pray together and most importantly live by St. Lorenzo’s example as a witness of the Good News. I bid you the blessings of a peaceful and spiritually nourishing new year. I pray that you had a wonderful Christmas season filled with memories to last a lifetime and beyond. Certainly, the rush of the holidays can be emotionally and physically draining, so as we begin this New Year, let us pause, give thanks, and ask our heavenly Father to cradle us in the warmth of His love. My prayers and blessings ushering us into 2019!

We LEARN AND EDUCATE.

WE ARE A PROPHETIC PEOPLE

HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compli-ment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation--to do his Father s work--but he also returned home with his parents. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

LAS POSADAS celebrated at SLR! For the second time here, we experienced the tradi-tional Hispanic celebration de-picting Mary & Joseph’s search for lodging in Bethle-hem. It is most commonly celebrated in Mexico although practiced in other countries as well. The word posada means “inn” or “place of lodging”. Las Posadas includes a series of responsive verses sung between a group of pilgrims asking for lodging and inn-keepers turning them away.

...As our Church continues to grow, so do our needs and our responsibilities. This is why, after many months of research and reflection, consultation, and prayer, we have decided to embark on efforts to renew our Church. Our aim is to ensure our parishes, schools, and ministries continue to grow and are able to make critical investments to serve our children, families, and neighbors for years to come...

HELPING OTHERS Thomas, Naomi, Valerie (9) and Alex (12). The Quintero family have been members of our parish for one year and their children are currently enrolled in our Religious Education program. They are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. The Quinteros were the only family who assisted in the final assembly and delivery of over 150 hot lunches and sweaters and blankets collected by our Religious Education program, It took over 2 hours to assemble the lunches, sort the clothes and load the 4 cars to make the deliveries. Once the items were delivered, Mr. Quintero shared that it was a great experience and one they want to continue to be a part of. He appreciated the experience offered to him and his family to serve the less fortunate.

Simbang Gabi—Dec 16 @ the 6:30pm mass. (L-R): Danny & Mell Bañez (Mass Coordinators, Art & Edith Malicdem (Mass Coordinators), Cecille & Alain Graziani (GRACE program coordinators) This 2018, St. Lorenzo celebrated 3 evening masses (instead of the traditional Dawn masses practiced previ-ously)

Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition. It is a series of nine dawn masses. The mass starts as early as 4:00 a.m. It begins on December 16 and ends on the midnight of the 24th of December, which is the midnight mass. This tradition was introduced by the Spanish friars to allow the farmers to hear mass before going to the fields early in the morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular Spanish name as the Misa de Gallo, or "Mass of the Rooster.'' Simbang Gabi is not just a tradition that is celebrated because we need to do so. But it is also the spiritual preparation for Christmas, in commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The celebration is also seen as a way of requesting blessings from the Lord, as most people believe that if one completes the whole series of nine dawn masses, wishes will be granted. As a welcoming community, we celebrate our life, conscious of our multi-ethnic traditions, vowing unity with Christ in our multi-cultural differences. We usher in our lives (being evangelized) and proclaim (as evangelizers) the reign of God as

Priests, Prophets and Kings, and in so doing, we celebrate our discipleship in Christ Jesus. We extol “being Church” through the formation of Small Faith Communities as a way of life in being priests, prophets and kings; thus, we become economical-

ly stable and self-reliant as we give special attention and solicitude to our youth and the needy.

“They were faithful to the teaching of the apostles, the common life of sharing,

the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42)

Gifts from an IRA If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly from your IRA account to the parish. This law allows you to transfer any amount up to $100,000 annually directly to a qualified charitable organization without paying income tax on the distribution. The transfer does not generate taxable income or a tax de-duction, so you benefit even if you do not itemized your tax deductions. Your gift can satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution. Gifts of Stock Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stocks may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of parish, school or favorite Catholic ministry. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits: • A possible charitable deduction to help you save on taxes • Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes • Avoidance of the tax on net investment income From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings and support our programs. Please contact Brooke Glazer at 213-637-7381 or [email protected].

Tax-Wise Year End Giving Options
