Noun Genders. Masculine Gender.

All Russian singular nouns no matter whether denoting a living thing or an object have their gender. There are three genders in Russian: masculine, feminine and neuter. You can usually determine the gender of a noun by its ending. Here are some basic rules, although exceptions exist:

• Nouns ending in the soft sign -ь can be either masculine or feminine. The best way to tell the gender of such nouns is to memorize them or to check the dictionary.день (a day) - masculine жизнь (life) - feminine

Noun Genders. Important Notes.

1. There is a group of masculine nouns ending in а/я. These are nouns denoting male persons, so the biological gender is more important here than formal endings.Папа - (Daddy, Papa) - masculineДядя - (Uncle) - masculineДедушка - (Grandfather) - masculineМужчина - (Man) – masculine

2. Neuter nouns generally refer to nonliving objects and abstract notions. Only a small group of animate nouns are neuter. Дитя –(child)-neuter,Животное -(animal)-neuter
