Perhaps moreimportantly, through the activities in this book, you andyour child can form a closer, stronger relationship. 1. Play Is the Essence of Learning

This past summer we had a particularly large andvery playful brood of chipmunks in our backyard. Theirentertaining playfulness, as is the case with all animals,serves a serious end. So it is with human beings. Playinvolves us fully, and we learn most effectively throughplay. Think, for instance, of your child learning to talk orwalk. You and your child made it a game, a kind of play.The two of you delighted in each gurgling sound andlaughed at each wobbly step. So, too, the activities in thisbook are designed to make learning to read and write anatural event, one in which play is the guiding principle.

3. Learning Brings the Family Together

Moments shared through the activities in this bookwill draw your family together. Since all of the activitiesinvolve both you and your child, they help foster a close,caYing relationship. Many of today's parents hold jobsoutside the home, while at the same time trying to be a"full-time parent"; and there are many single-parentfamilies. In these circumstances, time and energy forextensive projects simply are not available. We havetherefore designed most of these activities so that theycan be done in shori. periods of timemany of them takeonly a few minutes. Some can be done while you are busywith another task, such as preparing a meal; others areespecially designed for working parents who must travelfrequently.

4. Home Is the Center for Learning

You are your child's first and best teacher. Whenyou show you-. child that reading, speaking, writing, andlistening are valued in your home, you send him or her animportant message. When you make reading and writinga part of your nurturing, your child will view them withpleasure. When you tell your child stories from your ownfamily history, life, and imagination, you reveal yourselfto her or him and give your child "roots." Just asimportantly, when you listen attentively to what yourchild has to tell, you are breeding a healthy ego andraising a confident, self-reliant person. Strong support forliteracy in your home will insure that your child gets themost out of formal schooling.

5. Praise Fosters Growth

Reading and writing are admittedly difficult skillsfor many children to master. One of the most importantthings you can do is provide bushels of praise. Just aswhen your child learns to walk or talk, the mastery ofreading and writing requires your encouragement andemotional support.

Don't be overly concerned about correctness. Whena child colors in a coloring book, there is no need to "staywithin the lines." Similarly, when your child writes,neatness and correct spelling are less important than thejoy and action of writing. We advocate "invented" spellingas your child struggles to learn to write. Let the childspell the words as best he or she can. Similarly, whenyour child reads aloud, don't worry if a few words getmissed or mispronounced.

What is important is that you share, praise, and bea model. Sharing in these 101 activities will pay off inhelping your child learn to read and write, speak andlisten; it will foster a strong, close relationship betweenyou and your child.

[A note about gender: Sometimes we write "he,"sometimes we write "she." This seems preferable to "s/he"or "he or she." You may change the gender of thepronouns to suit your child.]

Researchers are finally discovering what manyparents have known for years: From the moment yourchild was born, learning began. In this section you willfind activities you can do to help stimulate that learning,to take advantage of your baby's growing fascination withlanguage. During the nursery months, you can lay animportant foundation for the later development ofreading and writing skills.

1. Talk to Your Baby

Don't worry that she doesn't understand what youare talking about. She will associate your voice and thelanguage you speak with the comfort and care youprovide her. Don't be afraid to chatter away about whatyou are doing, whether you're driving a car, cleaning aroom, or doing the office work you had to bring home withyou. Hearing you talk will encourage your child toexperiment with sounds; this experimentation will helpyour child develop the oral language necessary for otherlanguage skills.

2. Cooing

When your baby starts to coo, go ahead and cooback, repeating the sounds he is making. This may verywell be your baby's first experience with the power oflanguage: He's making you make noise.

3. Imitation
