Without a home in which languagespeaking, listening, writing, and readingis valued,success both in school and later life may be difficult. Wehave put this book together to help you help your childacquire skill in reading and writing. Perhaps moreimportantly, through the activities in this book, you andyour child can form a closer, stronger relationship. Yourchild will gain not only skill but also life-long pleas:c inreading and writing, and you will gain your child'saffection and respect. We base these activities on fiveprincipal ideas:

1. Play Is the Essence of Learning

This past summer we had a particularly large andvery playful brood of chipmunks in our backyard. Theirentertaining playfulness, as is the case with all animals,serves a serious end. So it is with human beings. Playinvolves us fully, and we learn most effectively throughplay. Think, for instance, of your child learning to talk orwalk. You and your child made it a game, a kind of play.The two of you delighted in each gurgling sound andlaughed at each wobbly step. So, too, the activities in thisbook are designed to make learning to read and write anatural event, one in which play is the guiding principle.

Many of the activities in this book use orallanguage activities as the basis for reading and writing.Research in this area tells us that strong oral languageskills are necessary for most children to develop asreaders and writers. Frequently, you'll find that theactivities involve both writing and reading and alsoincorporate listening. Writing stories, reading stories,listening to stories, and telling storiesthese actions areintertwined and reinforce each other.

3. Learning Brings the Family Together

Moments shared through the activities in this bookwill draw your family together. Since all of the activitiesinvolve both you and your child, they help foster a close,caYing relationship. Many of today's parents hold jobsoutside the home, while at the same time trying to be a"full-time parent"; and there are many single-parentfamilies. In these circumstances, time and energy forextensive projects simply are not available. We havetherefore designed most of these activities so that theycan be done in shori. periods of timemany of them takeonly a few minutes. Some can be done while you are busywith another task, such as preparing a meal; others areespecially designed for working parents who must travelfrequently.

4. Home Is the Center for Learning

You are your child's first and best teacher. Whenyou show you-. child that reading, speaking, writing, andlistening are valued in your home, you send him or her animportant message. When you make reading and writinga part of your nurturing, your child will view them withpleasure. When you tell your child stories from your ownfamily history, life, and imagination, you reveal yourselfto her or him and give your child "roots." Just asimportantly, when you listen attentively to what yourchild has to tell, you are breeding a healthy ego andraising a confident, self-reliant person. Strong support forliteracy in your home will insure that your child gets themost out of formal schooling.

5. Las albanazas fomentan el aprendizaje

5. Praise Fosters Growth

Reading and writing are admittedly difficult skillsfor many children to master. One of the most importantthings you can do is provide bushels of praise. Just aswhen your child learns to walk or talk, the mastery ofreading and writing requires your encouragement andemotional support.

Don't be overly concerned about correctness. Whena child colors in a coloring book, there is no need to "staywithin the lines." Similarly, when your child writes,neatness and correct spelling are less important than thejoy and action of writing. We advocate "invented" spellingas your child struggles to learn to write. Let the childspell the words as best he or she can. Similarly, whenyour child reads aloud, don't worry if a few words getmissed or mispronounced.

What is important is that you share, praise, and bea model. Sharing in these 101 activities will pay off inhelping your child learn to read and write, speak andlisten; it will foster a strong, close relationship betweenyou and your child.

[A note about gender: Sometimes we write "he,"sometimes we write "she." This seems preferable to "s/he"or "he or she." You may change the gender of thepronouns to suit your child.]

Researchers are finally discovering what manyparents have known for years: From the moment yourchild was born, learning began. In this section you willfind activities you can do to help stimulate that learning,to take advantage of your baby's growing fascination withlanguage. During the nursery months, you can lay animportant foundation for the later development ofreading and writing skills.

1. Talk to Your Baby

Don't worry that she doesn't understand what youare talking about. She will associate your voice and thelanguage you speak with the comfort and care youprovide her. Don't be afraid to chatter away about whatyou are doing, whether you're driving a car, cleaning aroom, or doing the office work you had to bring home withyou. Hearing you talk will encourage your child toexperiment with sounds; this experimentation will helpyour child develop the oral language necessary for otherlanguage skills.

2. Cooing

When your baby starts to coo, go ahead and cooback, repeating the sounds he is making. This may verywell be your baby's first experience with the power oflanguage: He's making you make noise.

3. Imitation

4. Indulge Yourself

Hold, kiss, caress, play pat-a-cake and "This LittlePiggy." Physical stimulation is important for your child'slearning. Psychologists and sociologists assure us thatholding your baby will not spoil him. When a child cries,usually something is wronga wet diaper, a hungryfeeling, or just loneliness. As you would not enjoy beingleft alone in a dark room to cry yourself to sleep, neitherdoes your child.

5. Pretty Pictures

Just as physical stimulation is important, so also isvisual stimulation. Mobiles above the crib, attractivepictures in the nursery, and putting your baby where shecan see what's going on around herall of these thingswill keep her eyes filled with color and beauty, and hermind active and alert.

6. First Stories

Begin reading stories to your baby as soon as youcan. He won't understand the story, but he will befascinated with the sound of the words. He will also growup associating books with warm, pleasant times. A bonus:Bedtime stories that become a nightly ritual in thenursery make bedtime easier as your baby becomes atoddler.

7. Reading Habits

All language is interesting to your baby. Whenyou're reading the newspaper or a recipe or a novel, readsome of it aloud. A fussy baby will often quieten at thesound of your voice; and as she grows, your baby willwant to imitate your reading habits. It's not unusual todiscover a toddler sitting in a chair with an open bookupside down perhapsbut obviously wanting to bereading, just. like Mom and Dad.


8. Cantele a su bebe

8. Sing to Your Baby

Most of us can carry a tune, at least a little, andyour baby won't mind if you hit a few flat notes or can'tremember all the words. In fact, you can make up yourown nonsense song about an animal, or hum your ownlullaby. Find a couple of single lines and an easy melody,and you're all set. You might even want to write thewords down to give to your child when he is older.

9. The Name Game

Get in the habit of saying the names of objects thatyou use around your baby. For example, if you bottle-feedyour baby, say "bottle" each time you feed your baby.She'll begin to associate the sound of that word with theobject, and you may soon find her attempting to imitatethe sound of the word. Also, talk with your child abouther toys and stuffed animals, giving them names: Teddy,Dolly, Doggie, etc.

Your home is filled with opportunities to developyour child's reading and writing skills. The possibilitiesare nearly endless. In this section we present someactivities you can use at home. Many of the activities arebrief, but they could be extended if time permits. With alittle effort you can certainly devise numerous otheractivities on your own.

10. Author! Author!

Books written and illustrated by your child maketreasured gifts to grandpas and grandmas, aunts anduncles. For the very young child, offer to print or type thestory while she dictates. Take this masterwork to yourlocal photo-copy machine and make inexpensive copies ofyour child's book. If there is no copy store near you, postoffices, libraries, and sometimes even supermarkets havecopy machines available for public use. Authors love toget their works published: Your child will derive areinforcing sense of achievement from "gettingpublished."
