The motto of our founder J. P. Mascaro, Sr. is: “If it’s service, it’s us!” This hasbeen the guiding principle of our organization for over 50 years. The customer is themost important person in our business. Our existence is depend-ent upon them. We cannot meet the goals of our company if wedo not satisfy our customer’s needs first.

Our business mission is to provide our customers the highestlevel of service within our industry. This must be done in an ef-ficient and cost effective manner in strict accordance with gov-erning laws and regulations.

In order to accomplish our mission, we must employ a plan.This plan must be managed, evaluated and adjusted accordingly.There exists three principal ingredients to our business equation. They consist of su-perior management, excellent personnel and reliable machinery. We can attain ourgoals only if all three of these assets work in synchronization with each other. Twoout of three does not equal success.

The employees are our greatest asset. They must be united and cohesive as a workforce. To accomplish this goal, we must properly select the members of our team.They must be oriented with our expectations. They must be trained as necessary andgiven the proper tools to do their job. LOWER PROVIDENCE >> Collecting trash willprobably never be a glamorous business, butfew companies have made it as widely charis-matic as J.P. Mascaro & Sons.

It wasn’t always that way, of course. The mul-timillion-dollar jobs, impressive headquarterson Audubon Road, acres of prime real estateand the inexhaustible philanthropy the com-pany is known for were all half a century awaywhen Joe Mascaro Sr. opened for business in1964 with a minimalist approach: one pickuptruck and one client — the old General Electricplant in King of Prussia.

Since then, his five sons Louis, Frank, Mike,Joe and Pat Mascaro Sr. have taken solidwaste and recycling to heights unforeseen theyear the Beatles claimed America.

But to Pat Mascaro Sr., now president, it’s allbeen just a matter of building on his late fa-ther’s motto: “If it’s service, it’s us.”

“If you asked me why J.P. Mascaro hasachieved the success it has I would say it’s dueto the incredible work ethic from our parents… some real true, lead-by-example core val-ues, things that really help you in makinggood decisions, being ethical in your dealingsand being good, caring people,” said Mascaro,sitting in his handsomely appointed office,with walls lined with family photos and mem-orabilia.

Down the winding hall is the Mascaro Legacyroom, featuring framed photos of parents Joeand Ida Mascaro and numerous articles frompublications such as The Times Herald, a sisterpaper to The Phoenix.

“We literally worked when we were in high

school, at night. My brothers are all older thanme and worked from about 5 o’clock to mid-night on the truck serving the General Electriccontract. The only time I would get off is if Ihad an away basketball or baseball game toplay,” noted the Methacton High School grad-uate.

“I think we remained true to ourselves; we did-n’t try to be something we weren’t and knewwhat it would take to reach our goals. Weknew if we want to keep this business success-ful we need to keep the trucks clean, put thetrash can back on the curb properly and do theright thing.”

The measure of success in the Mascaro worldhinges on three touchstones, Mascaro said.

“We’re committed to our customers, employ-ees and the community. If we don’t achievethree out of three, it’s not a good year for thebusiness. If it’s a good year for the Mascarosbut not for the community, then that meanswe failed. And vice versa.

“Our operating approach is very simple also— we put a huge emphasis on service; there’sno such thing as poor service. It doesn’t matterif they pay us $25 or $25 million, every cus-tomer deserves the same level of service,”added Mascaro, who cited people as the com-pany’s most valuable asset.

“Regardless of our infrastructure, our financialcapability, our trucks, our landfills, our com-post and recycling centers … if we don’t havea unified work force, it’s never going to work.”

“Share the well-being” could well be anothermotto that’s evolved over the years.“This is a company that recognizes its people

very well,” said Mascaro, who seems just asproud of the blood drive orchestrated by sonPat Jr. in honor of his late uncle, Frank Mas-caro, earlier this year, as he is of the new $11million Pioneer Crossing Recycling Center inExeter, Berks County.

The company’s generosity is legendary.Through programs like the annual RESPECTcontest, which encourages artistic expressionat elementary schools throughout the area,J.P. Mascaro donates millions of dollars to ed-ucation each year.

“You get rewards when you give,” Mascarosaid. “That’s what I’m most thankful for in thisbusiness, that we’re able to share our successwith people in need. That’s really important tous. We don’t participate in philanthropy tomake the business better. We shouldn’t give amillion dollars to this one or that one to makethe business better.”

In its 50th anniversary year, the brothers, whoare not huge fans of accepting awards, werehappy to receive a Lifetime AchievementAward in Entrepreneurship from the NationalItalian-American Political Action Committee(NIAPAC).

And what better time is there than reaching a50-year milestone to reflect on the challengesthe company has faced, Mascaro said.

“When I reflect on what we had to contendwith through the years I shake my head andwonder how we got past all the hurdles. Thisindustry is extremely political, extremely bu-reaucratic, regulatory-oriented, dominated bymulti-national corporations … and quitefrankly,” Mascaro added, “I feel those corpo-rations are just a compilation of inferior Mas-caros. I truly believe that we have one of themost premier — if not the premier — waste re-moval companies in the country. How thiscompany does business is at the forefront ofso many different things. We’re self-insured,we have our own in house legal department,in house engineers, we build our own build-ings, our own environmental compliance de-partment, we really operate outside the box.But all this would not be achievable if not forthe loyalty of our customers. And we neverforgot that.”

Mascaro was only 28 when his father passedaway, in 1981, moving him to forefront.

“My father died young. As far as I’m con-cerned, this business is still my father’s. Meand my brothers are just carrying forward myfather’s dream of his boys working together.We’re probably 75 times bigger now but myfather knew we were on our way.”

Montgomery County’s J.P. Mascaro & Sons Pledges$10 Million for Area Education Programs

NORRISTOWN >> J. P. Mascaro andSons, a solid waste removal companywith headquarters in Audubon, an-nounced Wednesday a pledge of $10million to fund educational programs,scholarships, and grants for studentsand teachers in area schools over thenext five years.

“My father and company founder,Joseph P. Mascaro, a man of limited ed-ucation himself, was a strong proponentof education in others. He firmly be-lieved a well-rounded education to bethe key to individual and societal devel-opment,” said company President PatMascaro in a release. “Our companyhas been actively involved in this seg-ment of the community for many years,and we are happy to be in a position toincrease our level of participation.”

The $10 million pledge will almost dou-ble the $6 million the company has al-ready donated to schools in recentyears. The programs range from envi-ronmental education tours of the com-pany’s waste treatment plant to theRespect Program, which offers interac-

tive assemblies to students focusing onrespect of parents, teachers, the com-munity, and the environment.

Bill Fox, an attorney for Mascaro, saidthe environmental tours have becomeso popular that Mascaro purchased aschool bus to accommodate the 3,000to 4,000 students who visit the planteach year. The tours not only serve asenvironmental field trips for elementaryschools, but also as a destination forMontgomery County Community Col-lege students looking for research op-portunities.

Respect for the environment, Fox said,is also one of the valuable payoffs of theRespect Program, which has reachedmore than 300,000 students in public,private, and parochial schools. Schoolsin Mascaro service areas can apply tohave the program visit their schools withfun activities designed to impress uponstudents the importance of respect fora thriving community.

“It’s fun and the kids like it,” Fox said.“It’s not a boring assembly. The children

participate in contests where they drawenvironmental posters to win prizes. Itends with kids having a greater respectfor the environment and an understand-ing of the importance of recycling andreusing waste.”

Recently the program has expanded toMorris County, N.J., after Mascaro wona contract to service the area.

Lindsay Mascaro Ptaszenski, director ofeducation and community relations forMascaro, cited the programs as win-wins for the community and the com-pany.

“Nothing but good comes from such ini-tiatives, whether at the school or com-munity level, and my job is to make sureour company maximizes its support ofbeneficial educational initiatives,” saidPtaszenski in a release.

“Our company’s continuing commitmentto the educational sector has also hada positive business benefit as well,”Ptaszenski continued, “with Mascaronow providing waste-related services toa growing number of schools and edu-cational institutions.”

In addition to educational initiatives thatimpact the classroom directly, the com-pany has funded several capital im-provement projects for local schools,including donations to Visitation BVM inLower Providence and the completerenovation of Methacton High School’sbaseball field into Robert Childress Me-morial Field.
