COUNSELING & CURRICULUM NEWS

Curriculum

Letting go of the freedoms of summer is a challenge for us all, yet I love the excitement of starting a new school year and enjoying the promise of a new be-ginning. I hope this summer has left your family refreshed and your student invigorated for the opportunities ahead.

Dimond High School continues to offer excellent, unique academic opportunities for our students. Students can choose from 20+ Advanced Placement courses, one of five world language programs, an outstanding fine arts program, the larg-est JROTC program in the state, on-line coursework, and lots of other great core and elective options.

Another opportunity worth highlighting is our engineering program, which cel-ebrates its third full year and now enjoys the distinction of being the only four-year, nationally accredited Project Lead

the Way program in the state of Alaska. Students at any grade level interested in adding an engineering class to their schedule for this year should visit with a counselor during registration.

In addition to a host of great classes and programs, we will again offer a number of evening opportunities throughout the year for juniors and seniors to learn more about the college admittance process. These practical information nights cover a variety of topics from how to choose a college, when to apply, how to apply, how to register for financial aide, how to seek out scholarship opportunities in our community, and more. Here are a few first semester dates to add to your cal-endar: College Planning Night, October 5th at 7pm & Scholarship Folder Work-shop Night, November 9th at 7pm. For more information, please contact Shirley Reeves in our Career Resource Center, 742-7020.

Parent Connect—the on-line district service that allows parents to see their student’s schedule, monitor student’s progress, access quarterly and semester grades, and view current contact infor-mation—will again be active on August 1st. If you utilized Parent Connect last year, you can continue to use the same pin and password information this year. If you still need your access information, or if you are unable to locate your infor-mation from last year, please contact the curriculum office at 742-7026.

We are also anticipating the addition of a Student Connect option later this fall, which will allow students to monitor their own individual progress in their classes. Look for more information in future newsletters once this Zangle fea-ture goes live.

What was your summer like? If you were a Dimond JROTC cadet you might have had the most fun a kid can have for the summer!

Over 90 JROTC cadets participated in DHS sponsored annual JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) other-wise known as “Summer Camp.” The camp started on May 27th, 2010 and ended on June 1st, 2010. 68 of Dimond High School’s cadets in addition to 21 in coming freshman from Mears Middle School, 16 East High School Cadets, and 5 cadets from a small village in Bethel were in attendance for this year’s camp. The JCLC Camp’s objectives is not only to challenge ones physical and mental strength, but also to learn new things, develop leadership skills, and most im-portantly have fun.

Day one of camp saw the cadets partici-pating in Jump Tower operations and ac-tually learned what the “big boys learn” when exiting an aircraft with a parachute correctly. The cadets performed admira-bly over coming the fear of heights as well as the mental fear of performing the exercise. Congrats Cadet Bolender! The cadets also participated in a Repel Tow-er block of instruction. The Repel Tower has been a cadet favorite for years be-cause of the varying levels of difficulty the tower on Fort Richardson provides. Cadets may utilize the ease of a slopped structure that allows one to walk down or conquer the 60 foot wall with reck-less abandon! In either case cadets had a blast!

Day two saw the cadets conquering and challenging themselves on the 29 station Obstacle Course. It was an awe inspir-ing time for instructors and Fort Rich-ardson Soldiers, who participated as the hosts for the camp, to watch both boys and girls attack 60 foot inclines, 20 foot trenches, splinter covered logs and a plethora of ropes, handles, bruises and abrasions on their way to king of the hill or conqueror of the course!

After the O- Course the cadets partici-pated in what can only be explained as a young teen’s return to childhood behav-ior; the famous (or infamous depending on your point of view) Mud Run.

This particular event hasn’t been con-ducted for about 5 years, because the weather simply hasn’t permitted it. It is just as it sounds, the cadet’s buddy-up and run through a huge mud filled pond about 20 or so meters long and continue through a couple of small feeder creeks

until they arrive to a designated road side pick up point. The cadets had an amazing time with the mud run and many didn’t want to stop when it was time to go back to the barracks for hose off. The Alaska Army National Guard had a great cook-out waiting for us when we returned from this messy but fun event.

In addition to these great events ca-dets learned how to work as a team on several team building events scattered through out the time during the camp. Events like an orienteering course. This requires teams to move from point A to point B on a carefully mapped out and well planned course set up by MSG Shelley. Speed and accuracy was the word of the morning as the cadets got a scenic and not so scenic tour of Fort Richardson proper! But the best was yet to come. On day three; in an unprecedented planning ef-fort MSG Shelley managed to get the El-mendorf Morale Welfare and Recreation facility Arctic Oasis to allow the cadets sole access and use to the recreational fa-cility. It is full of play ground equipment, putt-putt mini golf, a virtual archery range, a virtual golf course, Skateboard Park, ping-pong tables, pool tables, air hockey tables, video games and a rock climbing wall. Yes, a veritable “oasis” of fun and frolic for all. The cadets even had time to recognize a couple of birth-days during the camp at the end of the visit to Arctic Oasis.

Page 7: Letter from the Principal - Dimond High School · 2011-05-11 · , Attn: Nurse. If for some reason you are unable to fax directly to the Nurse’s office, please fax to the A.J. Dimond

Day four MSG Shelley’s planning prow-ess proved incredible once again as the entire camp and staff was treated to the H2-Oasis facility in South Side Anchor-age!

The cadets had an amazing time on the master blaster, in the lazy river, in the hot tub, and in the wave pool. Former cadets Diamond Burgess, Michael Yea-mans and Jordan Johnson from the new-ly graduated class of 2010 were selected as chaperones and assistant trainers for camp this year. All of them said that this year’s camp was by far the standard in summer fun Day five proved that “fun” can be a thing called physical training! The P.T.-athon is considered the “mother” of all physi-cal training sessions. If you like events like the “Davey Jones” Relay conduct-ed in a swimming pool, the rock wall to climb, an inflatable obstacle course climb,a quiz on first aid treating a chock-ing cadet (mannequin), a 60 meter Run, Dodge, and Jump station, a paddleboat race across Otter lake and back and a 15 meter pacer test then the P.T.-athon is for

you! By the way the distance covered for the entire course is just over 2 ¾ miles and yes you are running or walking very “swiftly” to get your team from Buckner Fitness Center to Otter Lake first! The night ended with a great dinner out at Otter Lake complete with camp fires and S’more making. (whew!)

The final day is considered to be the “pièce de résistance”. After some Water Survival training by the Buckner Pool staff, the cadets were taken to Bryant Army Air Field and got the chance to ride in the “Cadillac” of helicopters the UH-60 series Black Hawk Helicopter.

Camp staff and a few parents of cadets got an opportunity to participate in this event. An amazing piece of U.S. Army aviation, the Black hawk ride was the most anticipated event of the camp and well worth the wait. The camp concluded at DHS with a small awards ceremony that promoted most of the eligible in-coming freshman to Cadet Private First Class for their participation in the camp.

The summer camp would not have been possible without the awesome planning of the DHS JROTC Senior Army In-structor Master Sergeant (MSG) Shelley and all of the staff that assisted him.

We are looking forward to the 2010-2011 school year and it is not too late to sign up for JROTC. Cadets will be at the school during registration week and reg-istration is open for JROTC through the first 10 days of school. If you would like to speak to a JROTC instructor we will be at the school starting the first week of August. Give us a call at (907) 742-7010 and ask for MSG Shelley or MSG Watts.

photographs or class rings, often seek contact information for students. To meet this need, FERPA

allows the District to designate as “directory information” any personally identifiable information in a

student’s educational records that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy

if disclosed. School officials may release directory information about a student without first obtaining

parental consent, unless you object by returning this form.

The District has identified the following categories of information as directory information: student’s

name, address, phone number, e-mail address, year of birth, enrollment, dates of attendance, grade

level, degrees, awards or honors, scholarship eligibility, date of graduation, name of secondary school

most recently attended, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, and height and

weight of members of interscholastic athletic teams. This list is found at Anchorage School Board

Policy 343.34. A copy of this policy is available for review in the office of all of our schools or on the

District’s website.

In two instances, the District is required by law to release certain contact information regarding junior

and senior high school students, unless you object. First, the District is required to provide to the

University of Alaska the names and addresses of those students eligible for UA scholarship programs.

Second, upon receiving a request from military recruiters and/or institutions of higher learning, the

District must provide names, addresses, and telephone listings. The form below specifically allows

you, as a parent, to object to release of phone numbers and directory information to military recruiters

and colleges.

If you do not want the District to disclose directory information from your student’s education records

during the 2010-2011 school year, you must notify the District, in writing, by returning this form by

September 15 or upon enrollment after that date. If you have no objections to the release of

directory information, you do not need to take any action.

Thank you for your cooperation.

As a parent or a student 18 or over, you have the right to request that student directory information is

not released to military recruiters and others. Complete this release and disclosure of directory

information form and give it to your Principal or School Administrator.

If you have no objections to the release of directory information, you do not need to take any

action.

If you would like to limit the release of directory information, please check below all the situations in

which you would like to deny release of directory information:

___ Deny all Directory Information Releases EXCEPT local publication of the student’s name in

graduation programs and listings. Checking this option ALLOWS this limited publication.

___ Deny all Directory Information Releases. Selection of this option will also prohibit release of

information to military recruiters and post-secondary schools and universities and will also

deny publication of the student’s name in the graduation program and in the list of

graduating seniors in the local paper.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

___ Deny only release to Armed Forces and Military Recruiters, or Military Schools. Checking

this option allows all other releases.

___ Deny only release to Post-secondary education institutions. Checking this option allows all

other releases.

* * * Note * * * This form, requesting that the student’s private information not be released, must be renewed

annually.

Federal public law 107-110, section 9528 of the ESEA, "No Child Left Behind Act" requires school

districts to release student names, addresses, and phone numbers to military recruiters upon their

request. Students may then be called at home by recruiters about joining the military. The law also

requires the school district to notify you of your right to Opt-Out from this by requesting that the

district not release your information to military recruiters. The completion and return of this form

serves as your request to withhold directory information.

For the first time PTSA didn’t take the summer off! We kept the school store open for both the Teacher’s Academy AND Summer School. A lot of people – teachers, students, and other organizations at Dimond benefited from our store. Organizations that earned money through us included Gymnastics, Riflery, JROTC, Band, Football, Baseball, Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball.

A huge thanks to Carrie Smith for organizing and overseeing the operations of the store this summer. Our success would not have been possible without her dedication.

Thanks, also, to GAPCO Pizza for bringing in pizza every day to sell to summer school students. No other lunch is served and the students really appreciated it. GAPCO has really stepped up to help in our fundraising efforts.

The PTSA has also started work on our long-overdue Bylaws. A rough draft is complete and will be available for your review via e-mail soon. We have focused on restructuring our organization to help it run as efficiently for Dimond as possible. If you are a member of our group I urge and encourage you to look these over and

e-mail us your comments. Fortunately this document is not long or cumbersome and review is not a huge commitment of your time.

Our annual membership starts now. There is a membership form in this newsletter that you are welcome to fill out and mail in or bring to registration. We will also have a table at registration where you can also sign up. Be sure to include your annual membership fee of $7.00 so that we can get you on our exclusive e-mail list immediately. You must sign up every year to be a member.

We welcome Kathryn Eckhoff to our Executive Board this year. She has already taken over the daily operations of our School Store, which we all know is one of the most demanding jobs in our organization. She has already ready proven to be a huge asset.

If you would like an active role in PTSA please contact any member of our Executive Board. With our proposed new by-laws we have opportunities at every level for you. We look forward to your participation!

Summer always ends too soon, yet with the end of summer and salmon fishing comes the beginning of a new school year and another fall sports season. Di-mond is kicking-off our new year with the sports of Football, Football Cheer, and Competitive Cheer starting July 26. Mr. Chris Borst, Dimond’s new head Football coach, and his coaching staff are looking forward to the coming sea-son and bringing some new strategies to Dimond’s play book. Football Cheer coach, Mrs. Shelley Brewer, returns as Dimond’s Football Cheer coach and will be working with Mrs. Jami Bahmer, Di-mond’s new JV Football Cheer coach.

Monday, August 2, marks the start dates for Cross-country running, Tennis, and Flag Football. Coaches Mr. Nate Nor-mandin, Mr. Colin Gillam, and Ms. Kathleen Navarre return as head coaches for these respective sports along with their assistant coaches from last year. The following Monday, August 9, will

be the start of Gymnastics, Volleyball, and Swimming and Diving. We have a brief respite between new sports seasons until later in September when Riflery and Wrestling seasons begin on September 13 and 27, respectively. Mixed in between all of these dates are registration (August 2 – 5), the first day of school (August 18), club activities, sports competitions, La-bor Day Weekend, and the Lynx Invite cross-country running race and Dimond’s Homecoming on Saturday, September 11. As the title implies, Activities at Dimond keep us all very active.

Students who are interested in pursuing sports at the collegiate level should be en-rolled with the NCAA Eligibility Center by no later than their Junior year in high school. One very important change that has occurred this year is that the NCAA no longer accepts BYU correspondence courses. Please check the NCAA Eli-gibility websites (links below) for more information. Your student’s counselor is also an excellent reference for your NCAA questions.

Dimond has quite a legacy of student in-volvement in our activities programs that include opportunities far beyond athletics. If your student is new to Dimond or is ex-pressing a desire to take part in activities here at school, please ask them to stop by the Activities Office to learn what op-portunities are available (e.g., music, art, athletics, clubs, service organizations). You may also check our on-line calendar (link is available on Dimond’s home page under “Activities”) and the ASD Activi-ties calendar for updated schedules and information. In closing, I hope this new school year is full of academic and activi-ty successes for your student. If you have questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 742-6996.
