WOSU’s Exceptional Services Facing Challenges
Central Ohioans continue to pay rapt attention to news about COVID-19 with local news outlets like 89.7 NPR News a major source of virus news. Another important source is state and local officials. Since mid-March, WOSU has been dedicated to airing the Governor’s press conferences on all our services.
We cannot take for granted fact-based news in an environment of speculation about a crisis. That has been our goal locally with our intrepid reporters, All Sides with Ann Fisher news/talk programs and through our national partners at NPR and PBS.
However, surveys have also found that the news churn is having detrimental effects on the emotional well-being of many who needed to find ways to escape. We’ve seen a record spike in viewership on WOSU Passport with members watching over 38,000 on-demand programs in a single month. And members are turning to Classical 101 to soothe their senses either through our broadcasts or online posts like this one from the Carpe Diem Quartet.
Our community is sharing their reflections and thoughts about the impact of COVID-19 through WOSU’s Letters from Home project. Lynaya Elliott starts her letter from home like this: “After being stuck in my apartment due to the coronavirus, one of the things that I’ve begun to think about is certain points of my life where I can recall great detail about home or of a place deep within my memory in hopes of restoring its comforts.” You will want to read the whole piece!
Amid all the initiatives from the WOSU team to bring light to the virus and lighten the emotional toll, there are some dark days ahead. Public media stations like WOSU are facing record losses in revenue from members, corporations, small businesses and government entities. Ironically, this is happening at a time of unprecedented demand for our journalism and our local arts, education and cultural programming.
You can help us continue our mission to engage, inform and inspire our diverse community.
Contribute what you can to sustain WOSU, so we can continue to uniquely help our community as it emerges from this crisis.

Letters from Home is a collection of shared stories submitted by residents across Central Ohio about their day-to-day life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each voice helps us process what’s happening right now, as we all are living through it.
Letters from Home captures the ordinary and the extraordinary – the personal stories of coping, reflection, new realities, family, physical health and mental health as the entire world grapples with a public health crisis unprecedented in modern times. Read and submit your own story.
Now more than ever public media is essential and the NEW WOSU Headquarters is a space where great programming and trusted journalism can thrive. Be a part of the future of WOSU and give during the Big Give on June 10-11.

Meet the 2020 Winner: Keith Leonard
WOSU Classroom proudly names Keith Leonard, a teacher at The Wellington School, its 2020 Classroom Impact Award recipient. Leonard was recognized for his student podcast experience.
“Over the last couple of years my students and I have attempted to utilize podcasting as a way to make our English classroom more engaging,” said Leonard, who teaches grades 11–12. “I have no background in radio, but I've been shocked at how well my students have taken to the audio medium. They've created complex, well-produced audio pieces – two of which were national finalists in last year's NPR Student Podcast Challenge.”
Leonard learned the basics of podcasting from the pros at WOSU Public Media when he brought his students to the Student Podcasting Experience course offered through WOSU Classroom. Leonard said that with large projects like podcasts, his students are more engaged. “They have fun applying audio technology to their writing."
"Bringing audio projects into my classroom has reinvigorated not only my students, but also my love of teaching.”
Because WOSU Classroom is part of WOSU Public Media, teachers can have access to media industry expertise, tools and technology resources, and WOSU’s NPR reporters, broadcast producers and engineers for real-world, hands-on learning experiences for their students.
The annual WOSU Classroom Impact Award recognizes a passionate educator who displays a commitment to lifelong learning. The award highlights the variety of ways educators directly translate their professional learning through WOSU Classroom’s programs into their own teaching. From the podcast experience to digital wellness to using tech to promote a love of learning, educators who embrace a mindset of lifelong learning continue to explore creative and innovative teaching methods and achieve better student outcomes.

A rule of thumb in the WOSU newsroom is, “Good things happen to those who leave the building.” With all the tools at modern reporters’ fingertips – Google, online public records, email and texting – they can do a lot of work from their desks. But the best stories still are found by getting out into the community and talking to people face-to-face.
Not this spring. We’ve told our reporters and hosts to get the story but stay inside. They have risen to the challenge; transforming the way they work to bring you trusted information on how COVID-19 is affecting Central Ohio.
In early March we split our news department into two teams – the “home” team and the “away” team to reduce physical interactions in-studio. Our reporters have rigged up home studios and conduct nearly all their interviews by phone, Skype or Zoom.
All Sides with Ann Fisher (weekdays from 10am–noon on 89.7 NPR News) has devoted all of its programs to explaining the coronavirus pandemic. Ann Fisher hosts the show from WOSU, often wearing a face mask. She’s alone in the studio; all of her guests appear by phone or Skype.

89.7 FM NPR News can also be heard on our regional network stations on HD Radio as well as streaming online at wosu.org and on WOSU’s mobile App.

Covering COVID-19
With our audience’s new routines, we have seen increased use of our digital channels. People are visiting wosu.org to get the latest COVID-19 information, stream 89.7 NPR News and watch Governor DeWine’s daily briefing.
Reporters are eager to get back on the street and our hosts can’t wait to trade their home studios for real ones. It will happen, but in the meantime, we will continue to provide great coverage, and keep you and us safe.

Classical 101: Your Musical Companion
Meeting by Charles Ives, among other favorites and new discoveries by American composers. And it’s a Schumann Fest on Symphony Showcase. We know you will be glad to hear these familiar voices back on the air.
By the way, have you checked out our digital content? The hosts have been recording Quarantine Classics, a series of videos doing what they love most – sharing their favorite music with you. You will find them on our Classical 101 Facebook page. They have also been doing some excellent reporting about the effects of COVID-19 on our local arts and music scene – find it at wosu.org/classical101.
We are excited that Christopher Purdy is back on the air, broadcasting live each weekday from 9am–1pm. He will hold down that midday shift until our other hosts are able to return to the studio, then it’s back to early mornings for Christopher! Thanks for your patience as we work to keep our hosts and operational staff safe during the Coronavirus stay-at-home order.
While working from home, our hosts have begun producing some of our signature local shows. Starting this month, The American Sound and Symphony Showcase return to the Classical 101 schedule. June on The American Sound brings you An American Abroad by Michael Torke and The Camp
Thank you for your patience during this crisis. Some of our local hosts are working from home, so you may hear different national hosts during the day. Our local hosts are creating extra digital content and look forward to connecting with you at wosu.org/classical101 and on Classical 101’s Facebook page. Check out Quarantine Classics, daily Facebook videos with our hosts sharing classical favorites with you.
We hope you are staying well, and that Classical 101 has been a musical companion for you during an unsettling time.
