ENGLISH AT GEORGIAN COLLEGEWe offer English programs with fast and efficient progression that combine intensive studies with social and cultural activities. This provides international students with deep cultural and social integration. Our English programs at the Barrie Campus provide the necessary skills for students to succeed in higher education, work and life in Canada.

Our multimedia classrooms and computer labs, TESL-certified teachers, and college activities create an ideal environment for non-native speakers of English to practise and improve their English skills in class and online.

Students who successfully complete levels 7 and 8 gain direct entry into most postsecondary programs and obtain an Ontario College Certificate.

GENERAL ARTS AND SCIENCE CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES

Levels 5 to 8In this program, English language learners develop English proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and listening. Students also focus on essential skills for success and communication skills in various contexts. Language learning is facilitated through interactive activities, assignments, group work, multimedia materials, and in-class instruction.

To graduate from this program, the passing mark is 60%. Additionally, a student must attain a minimum of 50% or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester. Upon successful completion of levels 7 and 8, graduates can enter directly into diploma programs. For students completing level 8 only, the passing mark is 80% (diploma program). There are other programs, such as degree programs that require a higher average.

Students in level 5 or higher receive academic credits for their program plus a General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate in EAP on completion of levels 7 and 8.

Level 7-8Students enrolled in a full 14-week semester and who start on certain dates in September, January or May are eligible to earn a general academic credit from the first year of a diploma program in place of the two optional courses. Please ask for details.

Levels 1 to 4English as a Second Language (ESL) students are prepared for success in general English. Students are provided with an introduction through intermediate level English language courses in reading, writing, speaking, grammar, vocabulary and listening. The curriculum includes classroom and technology-assisted ESL learning. ESL students explore Canadian and intercultural contexts through everyday situations.
