lesson objectives• By the end of the lesson, you will

learn:

• The parts of a levels marking paragraph

• The different command words

• How to write introduction and conclusion

DEEP-C

• In each paragraph, you should use DEEP-C as a check list to ensure that your content is complete.

D• At the beginning of the paragraph, define/

describe the measure.

escription/ definition

For Example

Reforestation is the method whereby trees are

replanted in areas that used to be forests but

have been cleared.

Page 5: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

E• Continue by explaining the method further,

or elaborate on relevant points.

xplanation/ elaboration

For Example

The Ministry of Forestry of Kalimantan has

implemented a Forest and Land Reclamation

Initiative Project whereby local people and

companies come together to replant trees.

Thursday, April 26, 12

Page 6: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

E• This is one of the most important

components! You need to give named examples

xample

For Example

For example, logging companies are required

to replant 25 commercially valuable trees for

every hectare they log.

Directive Explain/State the example

Thursday, April 26, 12

Page 7: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

For Example

This method is effective as forests are

regenerated quickly as teak trees are planted. Teak

trees take 5 years to mature, as compared to 25

years for other species. Therefore, it has helped to

restore 90 000km2 of forests in the year 2000.

Directive be very specific

P• State/explain the PROS of this method

ros (benefits/success)

Thursday, April 26, 12

Page 8: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

For Example

However, this method is not effective as

deforestation still takes place and it is taking place

faster than reforestation. In the same year,

250 000km2 of trees were cleared.Give evidence of limitations & be specific

C• State/explain the CONS of this method

• Because Cambridge values a balanced answer

ons (limitations)

• The purpose of the “Introduction” is to create the setting for your essay, as with all of your EL Compos.

• You would like to introduce the:

• Reason why these management strategies are needed

• Give background information about the scenario

Introduction

Page 15: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

• Reason why these management strategies are needed

• Give background information about the scenario

Forests are very important resources as they regulate the Earth’s temperature and water cycle. They also

provide us with valuable resources like timber. Therefore it is very important to manage our forests

carefully.

Making the link to my content in the following paragraphs.

• Reason why these management strategies are needed

• Give background information about the scenario

Forests have been exploited by Man for food and resources in the past. However, this exploitation is now

taking place at such alarming rates we are losing our forests. Therefore, it is important that we manage our

forests carefully. In this essay, I will be discussing 3 such management strategies.

Page 17: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

• The purpose of the “Conclusion” is to sum up your essay. This is also one of the factors that will “build an impression” on your marker.

• You can conclude by:

• Summary of methods

• Giving judgement statement / Comparison

• Establishing new insight

Conclusion

Thursday, April 26, 12

Page 18: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

In conclusion, there are several ways to manage our forests. They are reforestation, controlled logging and

conservation.

• Summary of methods

• Giving judgement statement / Comparison

• Establishing new insight

easy peasy, yea?

Thursday, April 26, 12

Page 19: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

In conclusion, I feel that reforestation is the best method out of the 3 mentioned in the essay.

This is because reforestation is a good balance between allowing logging to take place as well as ensuring that

trees are being restored as a sustainable way to manage our forests.

kinda like SS?still manageable lah!

• Summary of methods

• Giving judgement statement / Comparison

• Establishing new insight Judgement statement

Explaining my judgement briefly.

Thursday, April 26, 12

Page 20: Levels marking Natural Vegetation

In conclusion, I feel that there is no single best method to manage forests as each of the methods have their own pros and cons. Different methods can be more

effective in different places, so it is important to analyse the situation in a particular place before using a specific method. Sometimes, a combination of methods

could be used to maximize their benefits.

New insight;something out of the

norm
