The Surprising Health Benefits of Giving Back

Selfless deeds are good for the world – but they’re also good for your own well-being! Studies have shown that helping others encourages your body to release dopamine, creating a surge of happiness whenever you do something generous. Those who regularly give back tend to have higher overall life satisfaction and a decrease in depressive symptoms. They can also experience lower blood pressure, reduced stress levels and better heart health.

Additionally, volunteering with others can be a great way to build new friendships and keep your mind and body active. Giving back can be as simple as donating to a food pantry, walking some shelter dogs a few days a week or simply donating to a charitable cause or paying it forward for the person in behind you at the coffee shop. (We even have plenty of volunteer opportunities here for families and friends who would like to share their time and talents!)

So why not try to work small acts of kindness into every day – and know that you’re helping make someone’s day in the process!

It’s apple season once again! Whether you’re venturing off to pick your own apples, or simply picking your favorite variety off the grocery store shelves, this popular piece of fall produce is ripe with culinary possibilities. As many true Wisconsinites know, apples and cheddar cheese make an excellent pairing. So why not go crazy and top your

freshly grilled hot dog with some cheese and sautéed Granny Smith apple slices? If you’re looking for a healthier application, grab a tart-sweet apple like Ginger Gold and add it to a fresh brussels sprout slaw along with some toasted walnuts, oil, mustard and a bit of parmesan cheese. For something sweeter, toss Honeycrisp apples slices in sugar, lemon juice, ginger

and salt and arrange on store-bought puff pastry. After 30 minutes in the oven, you’ll have a tasty apple crostata!

We recently welcomed a new cook to the Lexington Heritage team: Kristina Moore. Kristina comes to us from Village at Manor Park, where she had worked for the past two years. She has worked in the culinary field for over 13 years, spending the last seven years in health care specifically. Kristina has been married

to Kevin for the past 10 years, and together they have two sons, who are 1 and 3. They also have two dogs, two cats and two fish. In her spare time Kristina likes to garden, and do canning and pickling. She also enjoys reading. So far the residents are loving her cooking! Welcome, Kristina!

Once a month our new friend “Lexi” comes to visit us. She is a 9-year-old Chiweenie, which our residents have learned is half Chihuahua and half Weiner dog. She is a certified therapy dog owned by Shelly Runte. Shelly also comes to us twice a month to hold our Catholic communion service. We are so blessed to have her and Lexi join us.

The Beautiful Outdoors

Sitting out on the patio or on the front porch is a favorite pastime here at Lexington. Our residents can help themselves to some of our home-grown produce – or even help to harvest veggies to be included in our vegetable soup. The flowers are also all in full bloom, which also makes the patio most inviting.
