Cover picture: Remember the chestnut flowers from a couple of months back and Neil Burden’s explanation last month about the colour change showing they’d been pollinated? Well, now we have conkers swelling where once there were flowers. You can see the stalk which was the ‘support spire’ for the flowers: some of the baby conkers have fallen off, which is nature’s way of ensuring that the ones that do develop there will have enough nutrients to grow to a viable size in order to be successful seed.

Perhaps there is a parallel here: too many people using up too much of the Earth’s resources means that some will die off prematurely. That sounds very harsh but I am thinking of course about the global heating which is being accelerated by our fossil fuel consumption: desertification and wildfires, sea level rise... Even people in this country are finding themselves with nowhere to go as their homes are swallowed by the sea. As this begins to happen more and more on a global scale and we see mass migration of people to avoid starvation and wars over water, what are we going to do... pull up the drawbridge? Change the way we live to make room? What would the Christian thing to do be? It will certainly make the current travails of Brexit seem like a storm in a teacup.

What a dilemma. Anyone have some ideas? Please email them to me!

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO OUR STANDING STONES?

Here’s a thing. One for the new Parish Archive group, perhaps. Did you know that there used to be a row of standing stones (technically, called an ‘alignment’) in the parish? As old as Stonehenge, as old as the pyramids. They were originally spotted in some high resolution RAF aerial photos. Yet they aren’t there now, because around 1980, the then owners of Greystone quarry found that they were in the way of quarrying works and bulldozed them to the edge of the field. Archaeological sacrilege! During a parish walk near the quarry some years back I was told by a past member of the parish council that the stones were still there, buried under some rubble at the side of the road, near the bungalows next to the quarry. We had a quick look

over the hedge but couldn’t see them. So this is a plea: do you know where they are? Can we have them back, perhaps to put in a public open space and pointing at the solstice sunrise once again?

I’m mentioning this because before long the quarry is going to swallow that road as it expands and those standing stones carved out over 5,000 years ago will end up in the crusher if we can’t get them back!

TREBULLETT CHAPEL

On Sunday morning 21st July we were very happy to welcome Angela, Linda and Brian

to membership of our church and in the afternoon we

entertained over 60 people at our Strawberry Tea. A very good

afternoon with delicious strawberries and, of course, the usual

array of cakes. A relaxed afternoon for those who came with

plenty friendship and a rather busier time for the chapel ladies

who organised the Tea! See you again for next year’s Tea!

The Church and Chapel are combining to have a stall at the

Horticultural Show on the 10th

August with the theme The Fruit

of the Spirit. Please take the time to come along and say hello

and chat to Sheila and Richard and others who will be there to

welcome you. There will be several activities for the children to

enjoy together with photos showing how we have both occupied and enjoyed ourselves

over recent years.

Our Summer Sunday Lunch this year is on 25th

August when we will be offering our usual

delicious lunch together with home made desserts – please come along and enjoy the

food and the company. See advert on page 5.

Our September charity coffee morning is in aid of Myeloma UK and will be organised by

Leah Docherty and Ian Morrison. This is an excellent cause to support and we hope that

lots of you will come along to the event and enjoy the coffee and the cake and excellent

company as well as offering a donation to the charity. See ad on page 18.

More to report in October! Jill P.

ST. BRIOCHUS CHURCH, LEZANT

Reverend Heather West had her Licensing Service (to be Priest in Charge of the

Benefice of The Three Rivers and Altarnun with Bolventor) on the 26th June at St

Martin’s Church, Lewannick. The Bishop of St Germans, the Right Reverend Dr Chris

Goldsmith and the Archdeacon, the Venerable Audrey Elkington took part in the service

which was attended by many other clergy and parishioners and friends from across the

Benefice and beyond. Following the service, celebratory drinks and nibbles were

enjoyed in the village hall.

We have recently welcomed the Parish of Altarnun with Bolventor into the Benefice, in

line with the reorganisation of the Deanery (Trigg Major). Hope this might be

interesting! We will have more news on the arrival of the new Priest in Charge at

Launceston later on. His Licensing Service is in August, so I’ll report back on that in

October’s issue. Bridget P.

entitled to a subsidy of £4.00 for any taxi journey at any time, so long as a taxi is available.

To take advantage of the scheme the taxi must be pre-booked through Launceston Taxis on

07340 813434. The taxi driver will have a form that he will complete. You sign the form and

pay the reduced rate to the driver. Please note that the single fares quoted below are for

guidance only, if you live outside one of the villages the fare may differ slightly:

Lezant £8.00 Subsidy £4.00 You pay £4.00

use the taxi whenever possible although it is appreciated that a

taxi is not always available. Pre-booking the day before can sometimes help. Remember,

the taxi cannot be used on a regular basis for commuting between home and

work, nor as a school-run vehicle.

News from Lawrence House Museum and Cafe Scientifique

The Museum is open on Saturdays now until the end of the season.

An extra chance to see all our wonderful exhibits!

For the rest of the season, we will be showing Otho Peter’s watercolours of bridges in North Cornwall and West Devon and photographs of bridges in North Cornwall and West Devon are back on display in our downstairs exhibition room until the end of October. The display in the inner hall is of the beautiful facsimile of a Book of Hours originally in use at St Thomas Priory and re-created for us by Felicity Hutton. Lost to Launceston after the dissolution of the Priory by Henry VIII, it surfaced in the archives of the University of Birmingham. We continue to celebrate our famous men: John Couch Adams the co-discoverer of the planet Neptune, Philip Gidley-King, the third governor of New South Wales, in whose honour Launceston in Tasmania was named and Charles Causley, the best poet laureate we never had. The Toy Room is still a magnet for younger visitors and there is an Owl Hunt for them too. Visitors are still amazed that we have a genuine silver penny dating from the reign of William the Conqueror.

There is no ‘Café Sci’ meeting in August, our next being on Tuesday 17 September when Professor Andrew Bunker of Oxford University will be talking to us about “Finding the most distant galaxies in the universe. Cherry Warne, Volunteer Publicity officer, Lawrence House Museum; also Treasurer & Communications Officer, CaféSci, Launceston. 01566 772701

We had a very successful visit to Andrew’s Corner Garden near Okehampton for our June visit and luckily the sun shone for us. We were graciously received by Robin and Edwina Hill and shown around this wonderful garden on the edge of Dartmoor. We weaved our way through the green garden paths which revealed many striking shrubs including many varie-ties of Cornus which were still in flower and also a large number of shade plants. Robin gen-erously offered us all the opportunity to take home some seed capsules from his Erythronium plants, with instructions how to grow them.

The visit was finished off with a variety of hot drinks and a delicious selection of home-made cakes, all served in the comfort of a cosy conservatory. It was difficult to tear ourselves away!

By the time this is published, we will have completed our final summer trip which will be to Gardens Cottage on July 17th. Note there will be no meeting in August. On September 18th, we will be back indoors (the Church Room) to listen to a talk by Tim Ellis on his specialist subject of Euphorbia.

We look forward to seeing you there.

LEZANT FLOWER AND GARDEN GROUP

PARISH ARCHIVE GROUP - NEW GROUP!

Interest has been expressed in forming

a Lezant Parish Archive Group to

research, gather and record items of

interest—the history of our hamlets;

memories; present day lifestyles;

anything you think should be recorded

for the interest of those who now live in

the parish and those who will be living

here in the future.

If this idea appeals to you, please come to the preliminary meeting at

Trebullett Hall on Tuesday 17th September at 7.30pm. We can then

discuss the form the Group will take, days and times of future meetings

and the venues. The group need not meet every month—perhaps bi-

monthly would be best? Ruth Burden

Leslie Baker

15th April 1933 – 25th May 2019.

Leslie moved to Burn Park, Lezant, in the

1950’s. He then farmed at Swelscombe close to

Treburley, before starting a market garden.

Following this, he ran his fruit and vegetable

business, trading at all the local markets. Leslie

had 5 children who were all Christened in Lezant

Church; their names are on the wall in the

church. Sarah Bayly.

In our June meeting, Lezant WI members including 7 guests visited Charlie Bears' teddy bear outlet on the Pennygillam Estate. Charlie Bears’ Head Bear gave us an informative and fun presentation on the gallery and we spent a very enjoyable hour walking around the exhibitions. Several of us were unable to resist the temptation to buy a bear. Afterwards we went to an excellent lunch at the Tre,

Pol and Pen farm shop. In our July meeting, Bernard Ballard, Director of the Wheal Jane Group, gave Lezant WI a very interesting presentation on the history of the Wheal Jane and South Croft mines from 1960s to the present day. At its height in 1969-1972, the mine employed 450 people, primarily min-ing tin but there were also seams of copper, zinc, tungsten, fluorite and silver.

The Tin Crash of 1985 brought the tin mining industry, not only in Cornwall but across the world, to a sudden end almost over night. Wheal Jane struggled on but closed in 1992 and South Crofty in 1998. In 1999 the two mines combined into one company under a manage-ment buyout from the Canadian owners. The site is now owned by the Wheal Jane Group. activities. Across the site there are now 150 employees, a large proportion of whom are gradu-ates from the Camborne School of Mines. The Group is closely involved with a wide range of community activities and organisations, including education links with local schools and the Camborne School of Mines, the Cornwall Butterfly and Moth Society and most recently has cre-ated a British Cycling events track on the site for the Wheal Velocity Cycling organisation.

Two of their achievements of which they are most proud are hosting the Man Engine and being chosen to produce the bronze medals for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The WI will be supplying refreshments at the Horticultural Show on 10h August.

At the 11th September meeting at 7.30 p.m. in the Church Room, the talk will be by David Mar-shall on the Globe Theatre.

CHARITY COFFEE AND CAKE MORNING FOR MYELOMA UK

AT TREBULLETT HALL SATURDAY 7th

SEPTEMBER 2019

10.30 am to 12 noon

Organised by Leah Docherty and Ian Morrison

What is Myeloma? Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is

a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. At any one time there are around 17,500

people living with myeloma in the UK. It accounts for 15 per cent of blood cancers,

and two per cent of all cancers. Myeloma mainly affects those over the age of 65,

however it has been diagnosed in people much younger. Is myeloma treatable? Yes.

Treatment for myeloma can be very effective at controlling the disease, relieving its

symptoms and complications, and prolonging life. Unfortunately, though, myeloma is

currently an incurable (terminal) cancer. Myeloma UK helps myeloma patients, their

family and carers, by using your donations to develop new approaches to myeloma

treatment through our biomedical research programme which includes translational

research projects and clinical trials. We also use our Health Services Research Pro-

gramme and patient advocacy to get patients the highest quality of care and access to

the best treatments. Please join us to raise funds for this excellent cause.

LEZANT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Well, the Show is nearly upon us (Saturday 10th August) and I hope you are all deciding what classes

to enter this year. There is a class for everyone to enter, be it vegetables, flowers, pot plants,

cookery, handicraft, photography, art, preserves, wine, floral art and of course the children's

classes. Please have a look at your schedule and decide what you would like to enter and make sure

that your entries are with our Chairman, Mrs Mary Crew, by Friday 2nd August. We cannot accept

any late entries unfortunately. The Show promises to be another good one, with plenty to entertain

the whole family. We have Launceston Town Band regaling us during the afternoon and Magic

Martin will also be there to entertain both children and adults alike. We have also been lucky to

have the lovable alpacas from Sunnyside Alpacas, who are based in Lowley Bridge, joining us. There

will be sideshow games for all to have a go at and various stalls to look at as and peruse. There will

also be the ever popular Boot Sale. If you would like to book a space, then please let either myself

or Mrs Crew know. Please do enter a few classes if you haven't done so before and enter at least an

extra one if you already enter. If you have children, then please do encourage them to enter as

without the children, there will be no Show in future years. We have a lot of talent in the

Parish. Please don't be shy, let everyone see what you can do!

The Society is also holding a Pasty and Puddings Evening on Saturday 31st August. This will be at

Knightsfield House, the home of Philip and Fay Knight. Tickets are £8 each and will be available from

any Committee member. The evening starts at 6.30 pm and promises to be a lovely one. These

evenings are always special ones as it is lovely to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. If

you are new to the Parish, please don't be shy, come along and see if you like us!

We are also having our Christmas Market on Saturday 23rd November in Trebullett Hall. This is your

opportunity to purchase some lovely Christmas gifts, cakes and have a coffee in convivial

company. More details will follow later.

Another advance date for your diary is that of our Daffodil Show. It will be held on Saturday 21st

March 2020, in Lezant Church Rooms. Now is the time to think about purchasing some extra

daffodil bulbs to plant so you have plenty to choose from. This is a lovely Show and always looks so

pretty. If you have never entered before, then please think about doing so. We will all have a few

daffodils that we can spare to enter at least a couple of classes.

The Chairman and the whole Committee look forward to welcoming you to the 41st Lezant

Horticultural Show on Saturday 10th August. It will be opened at 2.30 pm by The Rev Jo Smart.

Our monthly lunch club on 26th June was again well attended.

Ruth hosted and started the afternoon with a poem “My Bramble Tree”.

The Meal was delicious - Beef Casserole with Roast Potatoes and fresh Vegetables, (a tasty Vegetarian dish was also available) and pudding was a scrumptious Raspberry Pavlova followed by Tea & Coffee.

Our speaker this month was Mary Synott, who has lived in the parish for 4 years and also provided the vegetarian option for the lunch club. She spoke about ‘My Life In Books’. Mary started reading at the age of 4 years and her first book was Nip the Mouse. Her father read all the time and it was his books to which Mary had access, including WWll, History and Crime about which Mary became an expert. For her 10th Birthday Mary was given a copy of Tolkien's ‘The Hobbit’, and each year thereafter Mary was given a copy of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ until she had the whole collection.

When asked what she was going to be when grown up, she answered “An Author or Librarian”. Mary was made Librarian at both Junior and Secondary schools and even during school holidays she made use of the mobile library. On leaving school she did not become an Author nor Librarian, but a Bookseller in an antiquarian Dickens-style book shop and she catalogued books that were sold all over the world. She didn’t go to College or University but learned by reading the books in the shop.

Eventually cataloguing became spasmodic, and she started working with new books, working for a number of booksellers over the years.

In the 1980’s she got involved with a Peace Movement and following that worked for ‘Sure Start’, whose motto was “giving children the best possible start in life” and where Mary used Winnie the Pooh characters to help the children. Thank you to all the Cooks, Servers, Washer uppers, Hosts, Speakers and of course Diners, for when we all work together wonderful things can happen.

Thanks also too Godfrey for the much needed window blind, and Mary Crew for proof reading this article.

If you would like to join the Lezant Lunch Club please telephone Ruth on 01566 782286 or Audrey on 01566 773062 for more details and to reserve a place.

Trekenner School are fundraising for Ellie’s fund for BTRS

(Brain Tumour Research Support). Once 15k of plastic

pens are collected for recycling they are sent to this Char-

ity who make items such as watering cans etc. The char-

ity collects food pouches, wet wipes packets and other

packets but pens are something that we all get through

quickly and why throw them in the bin when they can be

recycled? Please don’t but keep and when you have a

few, pass them on to the school. For the full story of Ellie
