Front cover photo: Winter Hedge: a potent symbol of a change that has hap-pened in our countryside since the 1970s.

My very first issue as editor of the magazine! I’m looking forward to working on it and I’m sure Jill will be relieved to step back from this task. She’s not going to be totally off the hook, however, as she is going to be your contact for advertising, she keeps track of the finances and I expect I’ll be running to her for advice on how to put this thing together successfully… she has more than 9 years experience in preparing our magazine and latterly the newsletter, and I know it has proved to be such a useful ‘go-to’ for many of us in Lezant Parish and the surrounding area. We all owe Jill a big debt of thanks!

At the same time, let’s remember the ‘backroom team’ who also help with the magazine: for example the proof-readers who will no doubt have their work cut out whilst I get the hang of this.

In coming issues, I will include a section on the natural environment in the Parish. I’m prompted to do this after hearing about the terrible decline in British farmland birds, hedgehogs and other fauna and flora. Hence my picture of the severely trimmed hedge on the front cover. At the same time it will be nice to report on the good things that many farmers and land-owners in Lezant Parish are doing for the environment, so please do tell us what you are up to in this regard. Just the other day, I was walking near Beals Mill, overlooking the river valley, and it was great to see that someone had been practis-ing traditional hedge-laying, something that will pay off later this year with improved cover for nesting birds.

Despite the limitations on space with our magazine, your contributions are needed, whatever they are: photos, recipes, articles, etc. If they aren’t used immediately I prom-ise they will be at some future time. I might need to trim your article a little but only in or-der to get it to fit, so please don’t be disappointed if this happens to your contribution.

If you are new to the parish, please feel free to join any of the organisations listed on page 20—either phone the contact number or just go along. You will be very welcome.

The Committee would be glad to receive any comments or suggestions you wish to make about the magazine, whether complimentary or otherwise. It is your magazine and we want to please as many of you as possible with the content. Contact me on [email protected] or 01579 370151. Any potential advertisers are also welcome and should contact Jill at the telephone number on the cover. The views of the contributors are not necessarily those of the Editor or Magazine Commit-tee and we reserve the right to reject contributions which are libellous, encourage ille-gal behaviour or contravene the Equalities Act.

LEZANT LUNCH CLUB

On Wednesday 31st January 2018, members met for their first lunch of the New

Year. We were entertained at the beginning of the meeting by Brenda, who amused us all with a very humorous anecdote. We then enjoyed a delicious meal of beef casserole (prepared by Steve Jones – thank you Steve) with potato, carrots and cabbage followed by a gorgeous bread and butter pudding from Jo Rider – thank you Jo. After the lunch several games of Bingo were played and the several prizes won. A good afternoon was enjoyed by all. If you would like to join us, please tele-phone Ruth on 01566 782286 or Audrey on 01566 773062 for more details and to reserve a place. Jill Price for Joy Holter [email protected]

TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH

It seems an age since we last reported in the magazine on our many events and we are very thankful to Rob Petch for taking on the editorship of this important publication as it is so valuable to our community. Christmas was celebrated at various events as we looked forward in Advent to the day that commemorates our Saviour’s birth. Our annual Christmas meal and entertainment was very well attended and the programme went without hitch (well, nearly!). Of course, as usual, the various acts had been well rehearsed (??)! The supper was enjoyed by all and the enter-tainment drew much laughter from the audience. A very good evening for all. On the 17

th December we had our Carol Service – the children enacted a Nativ-

ity and the service included many traditional carols. The church looked beautiful with the decorated and lit tree and the flowers on all the windows. A special Christmas Eve Café Style Service was held in the Hall on 24

th Decem-

ber with carols sung along to the Kings College Choir’s Christmas Eve carols. A beautiful service to mark the Eve of Christ’s birth. On Christmas Day we held our usual Christmas Morning Service when the chil-dren brought along some of the presents they had received and entertained the congregation with demonstrations of their particular gifts. January was a quiet month except for the Family Party which was held on the 5

th

January – even though it was held after Christmas it was the usual seasonal get together with lots of games and a traditional tea. February was also a quiet month but we look forward to our quarterly Charity Coffee Morning on Saturday 4

th March when we will be supporting Launceston

Hospital League of Friends, a local charity which does much, not just for the hospital, but for the community around it. Please see the advertisement for this event on page 5 in this issue. Our Mothering Sunday Service on 11

th March will be led by David Pett and will

include Kids Aloud instead of that being held on its usual first Sunday. Then for Easter, we are organising an Easter Discovery Trail which will take place from Monday 26

th March for the whole of Easter Week leading up to and

including Easter Sunday on 1st April. There will be depictions of the stations of

the cross all around Trebullett and its surrounds and children in the parish will be invited to travel around the various presentations and have a book that they can fill with stickers provided at each presentation. Easter Sunday will be Easter Praise to which the children can bring their sticker books and be presented with a small Easter gift. Coffee, tea and hot cross buns will be served after the ser-vice and we look forward to seeing you there. See Page 33.

TREBURLEY SOCIAL CLUB

Many events have taken place at the Social Club since I last put pen to paper or to be more precise fingers to keyboard. Christmas was a busy period for the Social Club: it started with the Christmas Fair - where you had the opportunity to buy an early Christmas present; Carol Night - when the sherry flowed and the mince pies oozed with clotted cream; Early opening - when we had drinks promotions and free bar snacks and later on the same evening the Prize draw when lots of goodies were won. We also saw the New Year in with entertainment from Jonny M with his brilliant guitar playing alongside friendship, dancing, eating, and drinking! The committee continues to plan events throughout the year, including the quiz nights which are becoming a frequent monthly Saturday evening fixture. Several different quiz masters have brought their own unique style of quizzing to these evenings. All very good light hearted fun and well worth the very reasonable entrance fee of £1.50 per person. We look forward to the next quiz on March 17th. It will start at 8:00 pm, with no more than 4 to a team. In February we had the St Valentine’s evening meal which was followed by entertainment from Phil G. I’m sure this was enjoyed by everyone who went. Many events are planned over the coming months: quizzes, enter-tainment evenings and of course the very popular monthly bingo. The Social Club is often open for significant sporting fixtures and many mem-bers took advantage of this for The Six Nations rugby during February. The Social Club has been fortunate in being awarded a grant for a defi-brillator which has been fitted to the outside the Social Club building. In fact some of you might have seen it when you have passed that way. This will benefit the whole community and hopefully save lives. One of the advantages of being a member of the Social Club, is that you can use it for private functions. Please see or speak to Cindy for more details to celebrate your birthday, anniversary etc. Dates and times of upcoming events are detailed on the What’s On Posters displayed on the notice boards around the local villages and in the Lezant Newsletter. CHARITY COFFEE AND CAKE MORNING FOR LAUNCESTON LEAGUE OF FRIENDS WHO SUPPORT THE WORK OF LAUNCESTON HOSPITAL

AND THE COMMUNITY.

SATURDAY 3rd MARCH 2018 -10.30 TO 12 NOON AT TREBULLETT HALL

Launceston Hospital League of Friends was formed in 1971 to provide extras for pa-

tients. When the Medical Centre moved to Landlake Road we changed our constitu-

tion to include the community, allowing us to provide equipment for the Surgery and

Community Nurses. We have spent many thousands of pounds over the years on

equipment for the hospital ensuring we have one of the best in the area. We give

Birthday, Christmas, Easter cards and Gifts to all patients in the hospital. We provide

money for doctors and medical staff to purchase equipment: to benefit us, the patients

who use the surgery and the many departments at the hospital. A few of the depart-

ments which have benefited from our work are Ward Day Rooms, Wards, Physiother-

apy, Out-patients, Consultants’ rooms, Midwives and Community Nurses, Occupa-

tional Therapy Department, Bereavement Counselling Room and all departments at

the Medical Centre. Money for all our projects is achieved by fund raising, donations

from groups and individuals in our area, and the many people who give donations in

lieu of flowers. Our thanks and appreciation to all who support us in this valuable work.

LEZANT PARISH CHURCH

With January and February already behind us, the Church year seems to be racing along. One excellent addition to the Church has been our new sound system, which went live for Christmas. Like all new things, we are still getting to grips with operating it and the hearing loop has still to be installed, but overall it is proving a great boon to everyone, even those who have no hearing loss, as it is providing clarity as well as increased volume. March is looking to be a busy month, with Lent courses already in full swing (see the Bulletin for full details) and Mothering Sunday on the 11

th. Revd Heather will be taking this service and as usual

there will be the blessing and distribution of flowers during the ser-vice. On Saturday, 24

th March, we will be holding a Beetle Drive (back

by popular demand) starting at 7.00 p.m. in the Church Room. Re-freshments will be available during the evening and donations will go towards the clock repair fund. Please ring Christine on 01579 370436 to book your place. Further details will be on the Church noticeboard in due course. Our fourth Sunday 6.30 p.m. service last month was held at James and Jo Rider’s house and took the form of Compline. It was a very enjoyable service and in March, on the 25

th, we are meeting at

Christine Stone’s house, Briochus for a similar service. Everyone is welcome to come and join us. April will see us returning to the Church for the 6.30 p.m. Eucharist as the weather (and the Church) warms up. Looking ahead to Easter, there will be the usual Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at 10.00 a.m. and Canon Richard Maynard will be taking the 11.00 Communion Service on Easter Sunday. Veryan.

RECIPE CORNER - BE BRAVE AND SEND IN YOURS!

Brenda's CANADIAN MUFFINS Preheat oven 180C, 350F, Mark 4 NOTE: Canadians use 'Cup' measurements, i.e. 1 Cup = 8 fl oz. Lightly butter 12 muffin tins (or use new plastic-like cupcake liners, but do not use paper liners as they will stick to the muffins. Melt ½ Cup Butter.

In large bowl, combine dry ingredients: 1+1/2 Cup Strong White Flour (preferably Canadian flour from Tesco or Waitrose, other supermarkets are available...) 1/2 Cup Strong Whole Wheat Flour 1 tsp Baking Powder 1 tsp Baking Soda 1/4 tsp Salt 1 Tbsp ground Cinnamon 1 Tbsp ground Nutmeg 1 finely chopped Ginger ball (from jar of Ginger balls in syrup) or 1 Tbsp ground ginger. 1 Cup Raisins 1 Cup chopped Walnuts Mix well.

In a separate bowl, combine moist ingredients: 1/2 Cup melted Butter 1 Cup lightly packed Brown Sugar 1 large Egg 3/4 Cup Apple Sauce (a little chunky, or smooth) 1 Cup Whole Milk Mix well. Combine dry and moist ingredients, but do not over-mix or muffins will be tough. Mixture should be lumpy/mushy. Fill 12 muffin tins. Bake 15-20 mins (middle shelf) until inserted tooth pick/wooden skewer comes out dry. Variations: Replace raisins and nuts with blueberries, cranberries, ba-nana, grated zucchini (courgette), grated carrot...anything else you like. Or make savoury ones by adding grated cheese, a little crispy bacon ..... experiment - it's fun! Muffins are best when baked just before serving....fresh is best but can be warmed up (50 seconds in microwave, or wrapped in tinfoil in oven). And they freeze nicely. Enjoy freshly made muffins for breakfast, but anytime is always great - afternoon tea, a midnight snack.........enjoy!

LAWRENCE HOUSE MUSEUM

Who wore this little sailor suit?

Lawrence House Museum will be opening for the 2018 season on Monday 26 March but before we do, we have a question for you. Do you have any idea who might have worn this little sailor suit? It has turned up in an unlabelled box in Lawrence House Museum’s cos-tume collection and the museum has no information about when it might have been given to the mu-seum or by whom. It is entirely authentic, having been made by naval outfitters, C H Ber-nard & Sons Ltd, of Harwich according to the garment label. Fur-ther research has shown that the company was incorporated in 1938 under that name and had branches in every naval port from Invergordon to Malta and beyond. It certainly had shops in Key-ham, Devonport and Royal Parade, Plymouth. So have you seen a photo of a grandad or dad as a child proudly wearing such a suit, perhaps in the company of a proud dad wearing an identical one? If you have any information, please contact Rosemary Jackson, costume curator at the museum on 01566 773277 or email [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you. The museum will re-open on Monday 26 March 2018 at 10.30am with another wonderful exhibition of paintings from the collection of David Tovey entitled “Fishing around the Cornish Coast.” Entry to the museum is still free so you can come as often as you like. Opening times are 10.30am – to 4.30pm (last entry 4.00pm) Mon-day to Friday, all Bank Holidays and Saturdays 14 April, 12 May, 14 June, 14 July, 11 August, 8 September and 13 October. HAVING YOUR SAY ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR PARISH!

The Lezant Neighbourhood Development Plan Residents’ Questionnaire: what’s happening now?

The surveys are in, the results have being counted ready for analysis, we’re all waiting for Cornwall Council to distribute their Housing Needs Survey…

Andy Hudson will shortly be providing a progress report on this important proc-ess. Just to remind anyone new to the parish, the Neighbourhood Development Plan is not about a plan for a big housing development in the middle of your community, but part of a process by which residents get to have their say on what happens in the parish over many years into the future. Email [email protected] if you have any queries.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF THIS PARISH MAGAZINE?

I am really pleased that Rob Petch has taken over from me as edi-tor of the magazine although I will still be involved as a committee member and with the distribution of the magazines each issue.

However, for personal reasons, Sue has decided that she cannot undertake the job of liaising with the advertisers in the magazine and with the accounts. I really understand her reasons for this, but it leaves me with that job to do. It isn’t something that takes up very much time but as I have a lot on my plate already it would be good to be able to hand it over to somebody else.

The advertising part of the position entails contacting advertisers either by phone or by email when their contract ends and asking if they will continue to advertise and then sending an invoice. We have a spreadsheet list of advertisers and the dates their contracts end so it’s something that is quite easy to follow.

The accounts are also done on spreadsheet and the banking is done online except that cheques have to be paid in at the bank (NatWest in Launceston). The time taken for this is not much – per-haps an hour or less a week.

I am happy to continue doing the accounts and dealing with the ad-vertisers until the end of March as that is the end of the magazine financial year. I will do the year end accounts this year. Hopefully, we will have a volunteer by then to take over this part of the maga-zine.

Please contact me if you are interested and can spare a few hours a month.

Jill (01579 370835; [email protected])
