INTRODUCTION

Hi, this is Ben Hewlett and I would like to welcome you to the Blues Jam Factory.

This is Volume 3 of the Ben Hewlett Harmonica Course by yours trulyand Paul Lennon.

Most harmonica players love to play the blues, and I am no exception; in fact that was the reason I started to play the thing in the first place.

But I do have to tell you that you can also play other types of music onthe harmonica; rock, reggae, Celtic, classical, folk, funk, Cajun, jazz -music from just about anywhere in the world, so don't feel you have toget stuck in any one style.

As you use CD1 to play along with, you'll notice by panning right youfocus on my playing and reduce the band sound. Then by panning leftyou remove my playing - you are now on your own playing with theband. This means much more freedom but much more of a challenge.

CD2 contains only stereo mixes to use for your live performances.There is also some excellent teaching of improvisation techniques byPaul, and a call and response track which will give you a stretch!

I hope you really enjoy playing the blues and learning how to do it withus. As you play with this book and the two CDs you will notice howquickly you improve. This is intended to be an introduction to blues so ifyou want more in depth study about playing blues harmonica come toour website www.harmonicaworld.net

Ben Hewlett became a musician at the age of ten in 1969 learning thetrumpet. He went through the school system of exams and performances,finally escaping the mandatory classical repertoire with the discovery ofLouis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. He was a minor third addict at fourteen and still has a passion for jazz and blues. Godfather DennisCorble gave Ben a harmonica at the age of 7 thus unknowingly sowing the seeds of a lifelong love of this instrument!

Paul is a composer/arranger, multi-instrumentalist and teacher. He is aformer pupil of Bishop Wordsworth School, Salisbury and former memberand leader of the Wiltshire Youth and Salisbury Junior Orchestras on violin.He also played in rock and folk bands in the Salisbury areas from the ageof 15 onwards and later graduated from Trinity College of Music, London inviolin, piano and composition (1976-80).
