    LiAi Fieldtrip to Barcelona

This leaflet provides information, schedules, maps, directions and other details in relationship to the fieldtrip to Barcelona that will be part of the curriculum of the Master’s Program “Laboratory of Immediate Architectural Intervention” offered at UMA,in the Autumn Term of the 2012-2013 academic year.

Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University - 2012-2013

  • “[...] a radical political intervention [...] changes [the] very “objective” coordi-nates and thus, in a way, creates the conditions for its own success. An act proper is not just a strategic interven-tion into a situation, bound by its con-ditions - it retroactively creates its con-ditions.”Zizek, Slavoj (2010), Living in the End Times, (London ; New York: Verso) xv, 416, pp. 33

  • Architecting the Common: The Making of the City Today

As with other LiAi fieldtrips, the inten-tion is to explore the city we visit through a series of meetings with some of those we consider key actors involved in its ma-king. These encounters will take different forms: conversations, interviews, lectures, presentations, walks, lunches and dinners, and will be, of course, related to the pla-ces where they happen.

There is a logic in the construction of the trip and one could even say a narrative structure: there is also a time. Our presen-ce in the city is itself an event: a break, an interference, a disturbance, an inter-

vention. It is also a discourse, as we will be constructing our theories on the city on the basis of the intense contrasts that the trip will throw on us. In that sense, the ex-perience throughout the week will be one of negotiating antagonisms on the basis of an attentive engagement with the people, spaces and discourses we will encounter.

We expect you to have fun and enjoy it while being critical and avoiding “heroic” and “celebratory” discourses. We want you to think not only with your brains but with your whole bodies. We challenge you through an(other) trip.

M26TH// The first day is thought to allow us to walk/ride the streets ourselves, almost unmediated. We meet no groups or institu-tional actors but a sensitive observer that will join us and help us find our way. We land in Barcelona’s Poblenou, a district of the city that has been subjected to radical transfor-mations and tensions in the past years, from its industrial past as the “Catalan Manches-

  • ter” in the 19th century, through its absorp-tion as a neighborhood of the city, the first wave of intense urban redevelopment with the Olimpyc games, and the arrival of the Fo-rum 2004 as part of the ambitious and con-troversial 22@ urban regeneration plan that, starting in 2000 and still ongoing, aims at transforming 200ha of the city into Europe’s biggest “innovation district”.

These transformations did not happen free of numerous and heated conflicts that we will try to unpack and explore. The shiny and shouting “starchitectures” that have proliferated in the area will provide the bac-kground for our exploratory walks.

T27TH// The second day provides perhaps the most radical contrast: Vicente Guallart, the new Chief Architect of the City will receive us along his Head of Citizen Participation (Laia Torras) in the fancy offices of Barcelona’s Ur-ban Habitat - the Municipality’s Urban plan-ning headquarters - to tell us about his views

of the city’s future and his plans to move beyond the so called “Barcelona model”; in the afternoon, we will move to a town in the outskirts of the city, to meet LaFundició, a group that works at the crossroads of art, culture and education, understood as con-troversial and collaborative practices and with an approach informed by and interes-ted in radical pedagogies and direct action.

More than likely, their views of the city and its transformation will differ substantially, and this will provide us good grounds for further discussion on what it means to make the city and who has such a right in today’s landscape of “strong discourses”.

“Agents of change have already descended into the streets and occupied city squares, not only threatening and toppling rulers but also conjuring visions of a new world. More important, per-haps, the multitudes, through their logics and practices, their slogans and desires, have declared a new set of principles and truths. How can their declaration become the basis for consti-tuting a new and sustainable society? How can those principles and truths guide us in reinventing how we relate to each other and our world? In their rebellion, the multitudes must discover the passage from declaration to constitution.”

W28TH// Wednesday will take us over the Collserola hills to visit the ETSAV School of Architecture, a public and somewhat expe-rimental school that is part of the UPC (Uni-versitat Politécnica de Catalunya). We will have the opportunity to visit the prototype built by a group of students for the Solar De-cathlon competition 2011. They will also tell us about the whole process and the expe-

  • rience of this year’s edition where they also took part. In the process, conceived and led by them, they have also redefined the limits of their own education, while approaching construction and practice.

After a short visit to the institutional cen-ters of art and culture in the city (MACBA and CCCB) we will meet the art educator Ja-vier Rodrigo to discover Poblesec: the next neighborhood to fall under the pressure of the ongoing process of urban gentrification and branding in the city. We will have the chance to visit the other “cccb” (centro de cultivos contemporáneos del barrio) and dis-cuss the ways in which the area is changing.

F30TH// Friday takes us to the well known Park Güell by Antoni Gaudi, although we will take a different perspective on it, one that is based on a reading of Gaudi’s project from the point of view of water management and hydric strategies. It is then easy to slowly move eastwards towards the hilltops of “La Rovira” where, from what used to be an an-

  • ti-aircraft battery (built in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War) one can now enjoy one of the best views of the city.

Secretely, and slowly since we will be tired, we can “slide” down towards a small, lo-cal restaurant, still quite high up in the city hills, where we can eat simple, grilled, medi-terranean food until we decide to dive down again into the best bookshops of the city to complete a quieter day and approach the last bits of the trip. Perhaps a special dinner in a special place? =:-)
