and especially CBC. I congratulate Music staff Mr Hamish Buckley and Ms Lisa Schultz, our senior vocal ensemble and soloist John Stoddart and the stars of the show our Junior Campus CSMF choristers.

Continuous Improvement

This term I have worked with staff, students and parents in the spirit of continuous improvement to ensure our students dress, behaviour, work ethic and values mirror the College values of Faith, Excellence, Community and Compassion. I thank all of you who continue to support the College’s high aspirations and expectations in this area.

Through the creativity of Mrs Sandra Mitchell the College engaged in some of our most important values education specially in the areas of bystander education, bullying no way and defining our masculinity by the way we respect women. We worked closely with members of the Port Power Australian Football League, Old Collegians and staff to educate our boys.

I remind parents that CBC has a non-negotiable hands-off policy as well high expectations around responsible bystander behaviour.

The Year 12 Food Technology Class under the direction of Miss Olivia Jobson and Mrs Andrea Reed prepared an outstanding culinary delight for the Board last Monday night as part of their summative assessment. Students planned, prepared, delivered an exquisite three course Indian inspired meal. Our students are to be congratulated on their choice of menus, flavoursome meals, professional table settings and service.

Congratulations to all students who recently participated in the Cross Country National Championships William Holmes in Year 6 who placed place 4th overall in the individual 3km event, 1st in the U11 5 x 1.5km Relay and 2nd in the U11.

Conclusion

This week I conducted an ABC interview in regards to an upcoming ABC story on Year 12 student Akram Maungkyawmin. Akram recently shared his story as a Rohyngya Muslim asylum seeker with staff. The ABC also are inspired by Akram’s love of life and determination to make Australia his home.

I was asked by the interviewer was CBC making a statement by having such a multicultural community including refugees. I said that all boys who entered our gates were welcome. We have no strangers at CBC, just different stories. Akram’s story is a truly inspirational one. I thank our parents who allow us to be countercultural to Australian politics and embrace our refugee and migrant children with the same embrace as if it were our own child. I thank parents whose immense sacrifice in paying school fees on time allows the College to assist students for who a Catholic education would be an unattainable dream.

After the ABC journalists left my office I sat in reflection on how many boys have entered CBC gates with their invisible suitcase of dreams over our 139 year history. I give thanks for the Christian Brothers College community who have embraced each and every student as they dance into the future with immense hope through a Catholic Education in the Edmund Rice tradition.

My blessings for a safe and restful holiday.

3INSIGHT

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

In celebration of our much loved and treasured Grandparents, on Friday 22nd September, the Junior Campus hosted its annual ‘Grandparents Day’ celebrations, with a liturgy, classroom visits and morning tea. It is always a blessing, to have the boys, Grandparents present within community and once again, their spirit transformed our space with a day of heart-felt celebration.

Just recently when presiding over mass within the Vatican, Pope Francis stated;

‘Grandparents are treasure, who transmit history, doctrine and faith to us as our inheritance.’

They are our link, the interconnectedness between one generation and the next. Our elders, our teachers, with a message and teaching that is offered with an open heart and unconditional love.

Modern research confirms the importance of Grandparents in a child’s life. The time that grandparents spend with their grandchildren, their patience, and their full-life experiences are invaluable to grandchildren. Grandparents are a resource of knowledge and unconditional love. However, one does not have to be a blood relation in order to assume the special role of grandparent; one just needs to possess those unique qualities that enable the establishment of a deep emotional connection with a child. Grandparents bring out the best in their grandchildren and this is so evident in observing the boys with their grandparents while visiting the Junior Campus. The joy on their faces and the pride that present when the boys introduced their much loved grandpa or grandma.

Research suggests grandparent offers children a broader range of knowledge, emotion and experience, creating a special place in the family as a trusted adult. Grandparents may even provide a safe haven for children to turn to, in times of stress when they feel they cannot approach their parents.

Some of the other special roles that grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren are:

Ancestor: Grandparents are the link to a grandchild’s ancestors and a connection to the family’s common history. They tell stories of their own grandparents and other ancestors bringing them to life and making them real for the children. This also gives the child a sense of ‘we’, solidifying the fact that he or she belongs to a family unit – something bigger than themselves – and gives them a sense of safety and security.

Buddy: Grandparents often assume the role of a friend, secret confidante, or ‘light-hearted conspirator’. Children sometimes feel more comfortable discussing sensitive issues with a grandparent than with their own parents.

Mentor: Grandparents are a child’s ‘cheerleader’, inspiring their imagination and dreams, nurturing their spirit and encouraging intellectual growth while giving a sense of self-worth. Grandparents are especially effective as teachers because their unconditional love makes their grandchild feel safe and comfortable and loved for whom they are, not how they perform.

Role Model: The influence of grandparents helps create a positive perception of older people and their relationship with a grandchild and also serve as a model for a child’s own relationships with others. A grandparent’s actions can teach their grandchildren how they should behave in society, care for themselves, and aspire to be as future parents and grandparents themselves.

Spiritual Guide: Grandparents have a role as a spiritual guide and help teach children to value acts of love, tolerance, compassion, reverence, joy, peace, gentleness, faith and kindness. By acting in a moral, ethical, and honest manner, they set an example for their grandchildren to emulate.

Student: Grandchildren will also get a sense of empowerment and self-worth by teaching their grandparents new things and having the

opportunity to share some of their life and culture. A great example of this is grandchildren supporting grandparents with 21st century technology.

Dr Julie Green, Executive Director of the Raising Children Network, writes, ‘Children with a warm, loving relationship with their grandparents are more likely to be resilient, have higher self-esteem and cope better with the challenges of life.’ No wonder we have such ‘awesome’ young men at the Junior Campus. The establishment of a close relationship with grandchildren has also proven to have positive benefits for the grandparents as well, in that grandparents have reported an increased sense of wellbeing, feelings of being part of a family and the broader society, and an improved social life through their connections with their grandchildren. Thus, our Grandparents are a gift to us and we are a gift to them. In closing, I would like to offer this prayer, acknowledge, and give thanks for the gift of our grandparents - life’s most valued treasures – our grandparents.

A Prayer for Grandparents

God of all generations: We thank you today for those who are grandparents or elders. We especially thank you for those who are grandparents to us —those who are grandparents by blood relationships, and those unrelated, but older than we who generously share their love and wisdom, their time and traditions, so that we have roots, stories, and hope. We bless you for the gift of grandparents, and we ask your blessing on them, that their days may be filled with delight through the moments they share with their grandchildren. May their giving and grace towards the younger generations bring fulfilment to them and may they be a blessing to all they love and call grandchildren.

Amen.

International Talk like a Pirate Day

Ahoy, Matey! A wondrous adventure was had by the Junior Campus as we boarded our Pirate ships of learning this week.

On Tuesday 19th September, the Year 3 Gold class weighed anchor and hoisted the mizzen with the students being invited to dress for the occasion. Most students embraced the prospect of adventures on the high seas as buccaneers for the day.

Our class, along with the themed campus, battened down the hatches and were buzzing with excitement as students engaged in their learning. Literacy tasks involved creating savvy pirate adventures, imagining realistic entries into pirate journals and selecting information that may have related to pirate diary entries, including Letters of Marque.

When the adventures on the high seas ceased, the focus turned to land and locating Treasure Chests! Creating and following treasure maps was a challenge for some students, while others were focused on the more important task of calculating the monetary value within treasure chests. Following instructions using directions on maps added to the list of numeracy tasks available for the students.

A pirate does not sail alone, so in order to have our students able to take the rolling waves with precision in their pirate ships, they were provided with materials and a few basic instructions in order to create their individual pirate ships. Their creativity in producing ships which not only float on water, but are also able to harness water power, the STEAM component, is a credit to them. Some even had some whale sightings Thar she blows!

The entire campus was on board with this themed day and classes also engaged in different activities including some who were able to demonstrate their expertise with their gaming skills, scavenger hunting skills and critical interpretations.

Overall a good time was had by all, Yo Ho Ho, including their feathered friends on shoulders!

Dear Members of the CBC Community,

RE: IMPORTANT SAFETY AND WELLBEING INFORMATION REGARDING THE NEW BUILDING PROJECT

I wrote to the community on August 29 2017 in regards to the construction of the CBC Senior Campus Centre of Innovation and Learning. The Centre will contain state of the art learning spaces, Front Office and Administration centre and a rooftop ecological classroom to be completed mid-2019.

The current Front Office and Administration Bourke building will be handed over for demolition on November 13 2017.

This will not affect Year 12 students who depart CBC on October 27 2017 in preparation for exams at their usual location at the German Club on Flinders Street.

Year 10 - 11 students will conclude studies on campus on December 1 and will be relocated to alternative classrooms if they normally attended lessons in the Bourke building.

Years 7 - 9 will finish on December 8.

Due to demolition and asbestos removal restrictions for entry into CBC will be in place from 13 December 2017 until January 2018. Notes will be placed on the front gates indicating accessibility.

The Senior Campus Administration Office/Front Office will be relocated on October 5 & 6 2017 to a purpose built room next to the Gymnasium on the Eastern side of the College.Entrance will be via Wakefield Street. The Deputy Principal, Front Office and First Aid room will also be located in this space. Parents wishing to pay accounts or make financial related enquiries will be able to do so in this location.

Please note that student entry will also be via the sliding automated gates adjacent the new Administration Office at the Eastern end of Wakefield Street.

New Senior Campus Evacuation Plans will come into effect from November 13. A summary of evacuation and relocations maps have been provided in this letter. The College will conduct evacuation drills to ensure staff and students are fully aware and practiced with the new evacuation plans.

Due to the relocation of Front Office/Administration there will be no phone systems operating on October 3 and possibly October 4 2017. In emergency please contact 0403 222 160. OSHC can be contacted on 0404 423 190.

The project will include the installation of an additional 170 new student lockers. Please note that the current location of some student lockers will change with the demolition of the Bourke building and students will be advised of alternative locker locations.

Please be advised that car parking along Wakefield Street as well as available pick up and drop off temporary parking may be affected by ongoing building works. You are asked to use Ifould Street as an alternative.

I take this opportunity to introduce and thank College Property Manager Mr Graham Brink who is managing logistics and relocation throughout the project. Mr Brink is working closely with all project partners to ensure minimum disruption and maximum safety for all members of our College community during this exciting project.
