EVENTS

The beautiful city of Seattle,WA, hosted the ALA MidwinterMeeting this past January. Thenew and unique glass-enclosed Central Library was amust-see for all!

Among the highlights at theIOP Publishing booth was the

‘60 Seconds With…’ interview on our website featuringUniversity of Washington’s very own Mel DeSart. Mel is ahighly-respected and popular librarian and it was ourpleasure to spend a few moments getting to know him alittle better. It definitely brought a smile to many faces asthey read his Q&A session. If you missed Mel’s interview, you can still read it in the archives athttp://journals.iop.org/sixty/101.

IOP Publishing welcomed familiar, as well as some new, faces to our booth this year. Many of our visitors werehoping to pick the key that would open the treasure chestholding this year’s very special giveaway – A Year’s Worth

of Chocolate! It wasn’t very long into the afternoon on dayone that Betty Galbraith from Washington State Universitychose the winning key and, needless to say, she was quitesurprised and excited! The second prizes of homemadechocolates were won by two STS members; Beth Blankleyof Nova Southeastern University, and Erin O’Toole ofUniversity of North Texas.

On Sunday evening, IOP Publishing proudly sponsoredthe annual STS-Members Dinner. Everyone seemed toenjoy the buffet and all certainly appreciated the hardwork that Beth Thomsett-Scott of University of NorthTexas put into organizing the event. We gave a special‘goody bag’ to attendees which included an umbrellacustom-made especially for STS members (handy forSeattle’s weather!)

We would like to thank all of the STS members who tookthe time to stop by our booth to express their gratitude forthe continued support IOP gives to STS. It has been andcontinues to be our pleasure!

As a learned societypublisher, givingback to thecommunity is morethan an aspiration, itis our mission. Thus,it is with great pridethat we announceour efforts indevelopingcommunity websitesdesigned with usersfrom all disciplinesin mind.

Community websites provide a meeting point forindustry professionals to exchange ideas andinformation with their academic counterparts, and assuch, they are designed to promote communicationand networking among scientific communities.

The websites themselves are completely free to use,and the content is current, relevant, and informative. While there is some peer-reviewed content availableonly by subscription, the majority of the content is free. This includes editorial, industry news, and analysis.

Current community websites from IOP include: compoundsemiconductor.netenvironmentalresearchweb.orgmedicalphysicsweb.orgnanotechweb.orgoptics.orgphysicsweb.org

For a snapshot of all IOP’s community websites, please see:www.iop.org/communitywebsites

These sites are not intended to take the place ofjournals’ content, but they do offer an alternative toend-users. As such, they provide librarians with aresource to offer to users who need more informationabout a specific subject area, but don’t necessarilyneed a journal subscription to fulfil those needs.

In the current environment of budget cuts and priceincreases, community websites offer an importantalternative to librarians, helping to provideinformation to users. They also help us to fulfil our common objective: disseminating information to awider audience, and building links with ourcommunities.

The Centre of Scientific andTechnical Information located inthe Slovak Republic is a publicscientific library, specializing intechnical subject fields as well asselected fields of natural, economic, and humanitiessciences. The library's numerousservices are used by scientists, researchers, small and mediumentrepreneurs from the area, aswell as students and tutors fromthe Slovak Technical University.

The Centre recently designed and developed theirwebsite in January 2006 (www.cvtisr.sk). After muchhard work and determination the site now serves as aplace where the Centre can disseminate informationabout their resources, as well as communicate withtheir patrons. It is accessed by over 13,000 users eachmonth.

Edita Tarovska, who heads the Periodicals AcquisitionsDepartment, highlighted the areas that seem to be ofmost interest to users.

E-Resources (E-Zdroje) provides a list of all electronicresources administered by the Centre. It also providesSciTech Navigator; a tool for effective usage of freeInternet resources.

News (Aktuality) is apermanent feature onthe homepage. Thissection providesusers with updatedinformation about theCentre, including anynew resources thatthey may want toutilize.

SciTech Informer(SciTech informátor) is a monthly newsletter circulatedby the Department of Information Services. Thepublication focuses on new happenings, new entries inSciTech Navigator, and also contains information onnew products and e-books. The newsletter waslaunched last July and has proved extremely popular, having over 450 subscribers.

Ask Us (Opytajte sa) provides a forum for opencommunication with current and potential users. Thisallows patrons to openly discuss questions, concerns, and problems directly with a library staff member.

We thank Edita for walking us through the Centre'swebsite and wish her much luck in the future!

We are delighted to be able to support the newly formedKarlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), formed by themerger of University of Karlsruhe and the NationalKarlsruhe Research Centre, as it becomes a Germanresearch university of excellence (www.kit.edu).

KIT is one of three universities in Germany to be given‘elite status’ as part of the German Government’sexcellence initiative.

IOP is the first publisher to have signed an agreementwith the new KIT, to provide electronic access to IOPcontent, for all users at the merged institutions.

We were pleased to be able to respond so quickly toKIT’s request for widened access to IOP content and to

offer support during their transitional phase. Since 1999, we have concluded 74 Consortia

Agreements with over 1,350 institutions in 57countries. Our agreements enable all members of aconsortium to obtain access to our content at asubstantial discount. Experience shows that significantuse is made of journals that were not previouslysubscribed to, so that the benefit of access to a largerbody of content lowers the unit cost of content for all.

Should you wish to discuss a possible agreementwith us, please contact Desmond Reaney, Head ofBusiness Development, at [email protected].
