Welcome to the Library What does the Library offer? 

A quiet space for you to read, do research and complete extended learning 

Lots of books, including non‐fiction to help with your research and fiction for reading for pleasure 

The Library gets a selection of magazines, including Match, Shout and Top Gear 

National and local daily and weekly newspapers 

Computers with internet access, from which you can print work for your extended learning 

 

Borrowing Rules 

You can borrow up to four books at one time 

You get to keep books for three weeks 

You will be sent a reminder letter if your books are not returned by their due date 

If you have overdue books, you will not be able to borrow any further books until they are returned

Reading for pleasure, raising literacy and achievement

Books (fiction) 

The Library is here to encourage reading for pleasure and to support your emotional and social development.  A broad range of fiction is available for pupils of all reading abilities, with lots of books by your favourite authors  

 

Finding Fiction 

Fiction books are arranged alphabetically (A‐Z), by author’s surname.   

If you are looking for a particular book, you will need to know the author’s name.   

When you are browsing the shelves, you will find all the different genres of books together to help you broaden your range of reading. 

 

Audio Books and Listening Books   

The Library has a range of audio books on CD.  If you would prefer to listen to a book, rather than reading it, come and take a look.   

The Library has also subscribed to an online audio‐book service, called Listening Books (http://www.listening‐books.org.uk/), which provides audio‐books streamed through their website.

Accelerated Reader   

Pupils in years seven and eight are enrolled on the Accelerated Reader programme.  It assesses your reading levels and recommends books based on this, helping you to find and read books that you will enjoy.   

Once you have read a book, you can take an online quiz.  For every quiz you take, you will get two merits for a score of more than 70%, and three merits for 100%.  Every

100% quiz score will see you join the 100% Club, and members of the club will have prizes awarded termly. 

 

Newspapers and magazines 

We have a range of magazines and newspapers available in the Library.  There are national daily newspapers (The Mirror and The Guardian) and a weekly newspaper called First News.  Also available is a copy of the local newspaper.

Book‐Swap Box 

Come and swap books with others people.   

You can bring in books you have read but do not want to keep any more and add them to the swap‐box, as well as taking away any books that have been read and left by others.   

We want to encourage you to read, and swap, great books. 

 

DVDs 

There are a number of DVDs available for you to borrow.  We have a range of great movies, which are either adaptations of books or linked to their curriculum, to encourage reading and learning through film.   

DVDs are loaned after school for one night and are to be returned the following morning.

Research and Finding Information: the books Non‐fiction books are available to help you with your research and extended learning.  There are also books that will reflect your interests outside of school. 

Non‐fiction books are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) System which arranges books together by their subject.  Each book has a number on the spine, which represents the topic of the book.   

The system was invented so that books were easier to find, with those about similar things closer together.

Other Resources for Research World Book Online 

This online encyclopaedia could be the starting point for any fact‐finding, research tasks you have.  It is an accessible, relevant and trustworthy web‐resource for you to use. 

You can use the search facility to locate articles, or choose to browse the site by subject.  Other useful tools and content include a biography centre, an atlas, maps, a dictionary and plenty of images and videos with the articles. 

To use this resource, use the link on your desktop called ‘World Book Online’. 

  

Newspapers for Schools   

This is an online database of newspaper articles.  Articles can be downloaded in pdf format and printed.

Essential Articles  

This is a collection of articles on current, topical, social issues which cover a range of opinions, comments and opposing viewpoints on the topics.  Articles cover topics such as smoking, animal rights, crime, racism and a huge range of others.

Fact File 

The Fact File book provides statistics about a wide range of key social, political and economic topics, for both the UK and the rest of the world.  A good resource if you need facts and statistics about social/economic topics and issues.

An online resource for Art, with all the information you could wish for including biographies of artists, images, timelines, thematic guides and a dictionary of terms.

Manga Club 

Manga Club is held every Tuesday, after school in the Library.  Get together with others who are into Manga, watch anime and draw Manga‐style 

 

Scholastic Book Club   

You can buy your own books through the Library from the Scholastic Book Club.  Come and pick up a catalogue from the Library and take a look at what’s available.  If you want to order anything, complete the order form and take it to the finance office with your money.   

You will be able to pick up your order from the Library within a few weeks
