Current  State  of  Library  Linked  Data   Future  Developments  (In  Progress)  

This  sec(on  is  focused  on  Library  Linked  Data  (LLD)  ac(vi(es  at  the  Na(onal  Library  of  Latvia.  We  are  not  aware  of  any  other  LLD  ac(vi(es  taking  place  in  Latvia.  Please  contact  us  if  you  have  addi(onal  informa(on  about  LLD  developments  in  Latvia.  

Linked  Data  func(onality  in  recently-­‐developed  NLL  informa(on  systems  

NLL  Digi(zed  Periodicals  Portal  (periodika.lndb.lv)            >  Linked  Data  about  structure  and  content  of  periodicals  

NLL  Digital  Object  Management  System            >  Linked  Data  about  digital  objects            >  authority  records  contained  in  the  system  published  as  RDF  

Challenges  and  Limita(ons:  

•  What  are  the  consumers  of  Library  Linked  Data?  

•  Lack  of  other  Library  Linked  Data  sources  in  Latvia  –  what  should  we  link  to?  

•  Linked  Data  is  not  a  high-­‐priority  func(onality  when  developing  library  informa(on  systems.  This  may  result  in  limited  implementa(ons  (due  to  budget  constraints).  

NLL  Laboratory  (laboratorija.lndb.lv)            >  Research  resources:  text  corpus,  named  en(ty  DB            >  Experiments  with  represen(ng  these  resources  as  RDF  

NLL  Authority  Data  at  the  Virtual  Interna(onal  Authority  File  (VIAF)  

•  Integrates  and  interlinks  authority  files  worldwide,    provides  links  to  Wikipedia  and  other  related  resources              >  VIAF  records  are  published  as  Linked  Data    

•  VIAF  publishes  Latvia  authority  records  supplied  by  NLL  

Authority  Data  Collec(on  /  AutoritaXvo  datu  kolekcija  (ADK)  

The  hub  for  Latvia’s  authority  data  with  links  to  related  informa(on  to  other  resources  in  Latvia  and  worldwide  

•  Integrate  Latvian  authority  data  from  mul(ple  sources:    NLL  and  other  cultural  heritage  ins(tu(ons,  VIAF  

•  Facilitate  reuse,  provide  informa(on  as  Linked  Data  

Digital  collec(on  devoted  to  the  150th  Anniversary  of    Rainis  and  Aspazija  (in  2015)  –  famous  Latvian  poets  and  literature  classics,  popular  all  over  the  world  

Pilot  project  for:  >  interlinking  digital  objects  from  mul(ple  sources:    libraries,  museums,  archives  

>  exploring  how  to  use  Linked  Data  for  describing  diverse  resources  in  cultural  heritage  organiza(ons  

•  Improve  data  quality  in  NLL  informa(on  systems  (by  integra(ng  exis(ng  systems,  reusing  external  data  sources)  

•  Implement  RDA  (Resource  Descrip(on  and  Access)  guidelines  

•  Facilitate  collabora(on  with  other  cultural  organisa(ons  in  the  areas  of  Linked  Data  and  Open  Data  

Wider  adop(on  of  Linked  Data  and  Open  Data  in  Latvia  

Pilot  project:  Rainis  &  Aspazija  150th  Anniversary  Collec(on  

Perspec(ves:  

•  Establish  a  competence  centre  for  Linked  Data  and  Open  Data  for  cultural  heritage  organisa(ons  in  Bal(c  states  

•  Make  Latvia’s  cultural  heritage  informa(on  a  part  of  the  worldwide  cultural  data  cloud  

•  Shia  the  focus  from  publishing  the  data  to  [re]using  it  for  connec(ng  cultural  informa(on  systems  and  enriching  library  users’  experience
