A Rockin’ Summer

Our music themed entryway display, “June Tunes,” continues into July to keep

with the “Libraries Rock!” vibe. There’s Ozzy Osborne’s autobiography, I Am Ozzy, Mitch Albom’s The Magic Strings of Frankie Pesto, Danielle Steel’s Country, and Sharyn McCrumb’s The Songcatcher. Also on display are the winners of Fairview’s annual “4

th of July

Coloring Contest.” This year’s theme is “Our Flag Held in Honor”; the display will be featured throughout July. Fine Free Week It’s “Freedom from Fines Week” from July 8 – 14. This is your chance to get those long overdue items back to the library and avoid the late fees!

Riding the Summer Reading Wave

As summer continues, so do our “Libraries Rock!” summer reading programs. Our Pre-K groups will be treated to “Chick-Chick-Chicken Dance” and “Rock Your City with Ozobots.” For our K-5

th graders, there’s

“Acoustic LIVE with Eric Lewis,” “Carnegie Science Center’s Making Music,” and “Rocking through the Decades.” While stopping at the library, kids can unwind with the monthly coloring workshop, “Catch a Good Book.”

Fun for Teens & Adults

Our teen and adult groups have several separate and combined activities this month: for both groups there’s “CD/DVD Scratch Off Art” and “Appalachian Songs

and Folk Tales Sampler with Jo Ann Dadisman.” Just for teens we have “Behind the Scenes: Music Box Crafting,” and our adults can get their groove on with the “Name That Tune” workshop.

Summer Reading Finale There’s no finale like a summer reading finale! This year we’re throwing an all ages, county-wide bash for our program participants at Wave Tek Pool on July 21 from 6 pm – 8 pm. There will be fun, refreshments, and Grand Prizes for each age group. You won’t want to miss this!

What Do You Know About That? Trivia Contest Trivia returns on July 26th from 9 am – 4 pm. In recognition of “National Parents’ Day,” we want to see how well you know TV parents and their fictional offspring. The contestant with the most correct answers wins a prize.

Won’t You Be My SweetTart? July’s round of the Circulation Desk guessing game is “Won’t You Be My SweetTart?” Take your best guess in how many SweetTarts are in the jar, be the closest without going over, and win!

Speaking of Books Our monthly book club, “Speaking of Books,” meets on July 24 at 4 pm to discuss Room by Emma Donoghue. “To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer.” -Amazon

Fiction Addiction Fiction Addiction is taking a break for the summer. If you are interested joining this teen book club, pick up a copy of Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake join us in September for discussion, crafts, and FOOD!

Cover2Cover Pick up your copy of Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and join the Cover2Cover book club on Thursday, July 19 at 1:30 pm. On a May afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary sagas of the Second World War. The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he had been a clever delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and stealing. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a supreme talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when war came, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a sinking raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would respond to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would hang on the fraying wire of his will. Now a major motion picture.
