Lichtenstein Pop Art Self-PortraitChoose an Onomatopoeia

What will you use for your word bubble for your picture? If you choose your onomatopoeia first it will help you to take a picture that will match your word. For example if you chose the word SMOOCH then you could take a picture of yourself blowing a kiss, if you chose the word SMACK then maybe you want someone to pose slapping you, if you chose the word SHHH, then maybe you want to take a picture of yourself sleeping. The possibilities are endless but picking the word first will help with your picture.

Instructions continued on next page

Take Your PictureTake a photo of yourself that fits with the onomatopoeia word that you chose. It is a

good idea to do a close-up. The further away you are the harder it will be to create the effect that you want.

Once you have taken your picture you should save it somewhere on your computer that will be easy to find.

1. Print off the picture of yourself that you are going to use. Make sure that it is that your picture fits the whole page.

2. Outline the “major” lines of your photograph with permanent marker and/or dark black pen

3. Using the sheet of painting paper included in your kit, trace the lines from your picture to the painting paper. You can tape your papers over top of each other on a window to see the lines better. Trace your black lines with pencil.

Instructions continued on the next page.

4. Your artwork should now look like this:

5. Trace your pencil lines neatly with a black permanent marker and/or dark pen.

6. Carefully, erase all of the pencil lines.

7. Write your chosen onomatopoeia in your artwork. THEN draw a “thought cloud” around it.

8. Get an unsharpened pencil and your paints, water cup, and brushes. Dip the eraser end of the pencil in the red paint. “Stamp” the eraser end of the pencil across your skin to create the Lichtenstein “dot matrix.” You do not need a ton of paint on the eraser. You don’t want it to be in a big blob.Use a ruler to make sure the dots are evenly spaced.

9. Carefully, paint the rest of your picture with the tempura paint in your kit. Remember this is grade 11 art. Paint within the lines. Don’t get lazy and have your paint in areas that it shouldn’t be. Your end product should have

very clean lines and the paint should be very clean.

10. Allow to dry

11. Use a black permanent marker and/or a dark pen to make your original black lines bolder (fatter, thicker, harder etc.). Can you tell the difference between the image in step #8 and the image below?

12. You are finished! Submit your work to Mrs. Biem along with a Self Evaluation.
