Market Review

DEBT MARKET REVIEW

The Call, Repo & CBLO rates for 5 days were at 9.50%, 9.50% & 9.25% respectively, on demand for funds on the last day of the financial year, with 3 non-banking days ahead. Liquidity in the banking system continued to remain tight following advance tax outflows.

Inflation quickened to 8.31 percent in February 2011 from 8.23 percent a month ago. Inspite of decline in food inflation, February inflation rose on account of high fuel and manufactured product prices. India's food Inflation again eased to a single-digit to 9.50 percent for the week ended 19th March from 10.05 percent last week. While the fuel inflation rose to 13.13 percent for the same week from the previous 12.79 percent in the prior week.

Inflationary pressures seem to be getting broad-based. The pressures from food prices are now showing on the manufacturing sector. RBI is expected to continue to rein in demand-side inflationary pressures and contain the spill over of food and commodity prices into more generalised inflation.

Reserve Bank of India conducted its mid-quarter policy review on 17th March 2011

RBI hiked its policy rates for the eighth time by 25 bps taking the repo to 6.75% and reverse repo to 5.75% in order to tame the rising inflation which has spread from food to fuel to manufacturing. CRR remained unchanged at 6%

The 11-year bond (8.13% GS 2022) yield ended at 8.09%. The bond traded in the range of 8.06% - 8.10%, as markets braced for auction of Rs. 10,000 crores in the month of April.Going forward The 11 year security is likely to trade in the range of 8.07% -8.12% with an upward bias.

Government of India announced the issue of 8.01% 2021 and 8.08% 2023 postal life insurance government of India special security for a notified amount of Rs. 7,000 cr on 31 March 2011.

Private banks one- year CD yields closed at 9.50% whereas PSU banks three-months CD yields were at 9.45%.

The 10-year AAA Corpoate Bond yield ended at 9.20% as on 31 March 2011.

Outlook:

Liquidity is expected to improve from April 2011, when these outflows come back into the system on possible government spending

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will have to maintain a hawkish stance on inflation and it needs to keep a vigil on two factors-first, geopolitical tensions and

secondly, the core inflation. The stubborn inflation is expected to put more pressure on the central bank to continue monetary tightening. We expect the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to continue to hike rates in future to rein in inflation.

EQUITY MARKET REVIEW

The benchmark indices have seen a surge of around 10% during the year while the percentage change between highest and lowest close is around 31%.Index Closed on Closed on Percentage Lowest Highest Percentage

01/04/10 31/03/11 change close on close on change25/05/10 05/11/10

Sensex 17692.62 19445.22 9.91% 16022.48 21004.96 31.10%

Nifty 5290.50 5833.75 10.27% 4806.75 6312.45 31.32%

The return offered by the market was not as large as it was during FY2010, in the backdrop of high crude oil price, high inflation and soaring interest rate even though the Sensex has touched 21000 points driven by stronger rupee and high FII investment. Volatility was on the higher side.

Bankex, FMCG and IT indices of BSE had witnessed 25% or more return during the year while Metal, Power and Realty indices had experienced negative return. However, the Oil & Gas index remained flat.

In the primary market 61 public issues have been floated, 57 being IPO and the rests are FPO. These public issues have garnered `46,267 Crore. The largest issue in terms of size was Coal India Limited with more than 15 times oversubscription and has raised `15,199 Crore. Highest oversubscription was received by MOIL at 56 times.

The equity market has seen net Foreign Institutional Investment (FII) to the tune of `48,838 Crore (data source : NSE) during FY 2011. There was a long spell of FII buying since May 2010 till Nov 2010 resulted into Sensex touching 21000 points. The last quarter has seen FII selling due to geo-political instability resulting fall in the market. However, during the last week of Mar 2011, the market has again experienced buying by the FIIs and has revived with full vigour.

Outlook:

Indian economy is witnessing a growth of around 8.5% during FY2011 and expected to grow at 9 - 9.25% by 2012. IIP growth is 8.3% during Apr 2010 to Jan 2011. The Union Budget aims at lower fiscal deficit lower borrowing, lower current account deficit, higher productivity growth and higher credit growth. These measures are positive for the equity market to grow to a newer high. Reforms like introduction of GST and DTC, Union Government's focus on infra-development and fiscal consolidation will also be supportive for higher growth of the equity market while the major concern remains on the rising inflation with soaring interest rate.

Market Review

DEBT MARKET REVIEW

Tight liquidity condition persisted during the month of February 2011 with inflation being the major area of concern for the Reserve Bank of India. The wholesale price index, the most widely watched gauge of prices in India, came down to 8.23 percent in January 2011, from a year earlier, compared with 8.43 percent in December 2010. It was mainly on account of drop in food prices with the fresh arrival of agricultural products. RBI continues to maintain a hawkish stance on inflation and monitor the liquidity and interest rate movements, very closely.

Sovereign Bonds witnessed a sharp rally and markets cheered the following announcements by the Finance Minister in the Union Budget for F.Y. 2011/12, presented on 28th February 2011.

l Lower than expected net borrowing of Rs.3.43 lakh crores and Gross Borrowing of Rs.4.17 lakh crore, as against Rs.4.27 lakh crore in the last fiscal.

l Tighter Fiscal Deficit Target at 4.6% of GDP for next fiscal, against market expectation of 4.80%.

l Increase in FII investment limit in Debt to $40 billion.

The 10 year benchmark bond (7.80% GS 2020) yield touched 7.98% on 28th February. On the CDs front PSU Banks issued 3 month and 6 month CDs in the range of 9.95% - 10.10%. PSU banks and Private banks issued 1 year CDs in the range of 10% - 10.30%.

The 5-year & 10-year AAA Corporate Bond yield ended at 9.20% & 9.14%, respectively, as on 28th February 2011.

Outlook:

Inflation would remain the primary concern of the Reserve Bank of India in the coming months with the spurt in Crude Oil Prices, subsequent to the unrest in the Mid-East Region. With the expected advance tax outflows in the 2nd Fortnight of March, tight liquidity conditions are expected to continue till March 2011. However, if the Crude oil prices ease, interest rates may cool down from April 2011,as it appears that interest rates are at peak levels or are nearer to the peak levels. Next Quarterly Review of RBI on March 17 will be keenly watched.

EQUITY MARKET REVIEW

Ahead of the Union Budget expectations and geopolitical pressure, the equity markets in the month of February remain in bearish zone. The major indices; BSE-Sensex and Nifty-50 settled at 17823.40 and 5333.25 levels down by 2.75% and 3.14% respectively.

Except the BSE FMCG sector, all other major sectoral

indices registered negative growth in the month. The

Real estate sector grossly under-performed with

11.09% negative growth whereas the Mid-cap and

Small-caps were around 7.2% down in February'11.

During the month, 24 out of 30 stocks in Sensex and

38 out of 50 stocks posted negative returns. The

ADAG stocks like Reliance Communication (down by

around 30%), Reliance Infrastructure(down by around

12%) due the CBI questioning to the group Chairman

Anil Ambani as a part of its probe into the 2G spectrum

scam. Similarly in Auto segment, Hero Honda and

M&M were down more than 10% and in Metal sector,

the Hindalco and Sterlite registered a negative returns

of around 12%.

The FIIs continued to be sellers for the second

consecutive month of 2011. They sold around equity

worth `4585.50 crore during February. The total

outflow since the beginning of the year 2011 has been

to the tune of `9398.60 crore. The domestic mutual

funds turned out to be the buyers to the extent of

`1121.10 crore till 25th February'11.

The Union Budget, declared on 28th February'11 was

greeted by a optimistic rally where the Sensex rose as

much as 595 points on no negative surprises in the

Budget. The entry of foreign national in Mutual Fund

industry, fiscal discipline, no increase in the excise

duties led the market rally. However, once the initial

euphoria is over, the Sensex closed at 17823.40 (up by

122.49 points) and Nifty at 5333.25 (up by 29.70

points) on the Budget day.

Outlook:

There are no major negatives left on the domestic

front. The budget declared did not have any negative

surprises and was focused mainly on rising inflation

and inclusive growth. The fiscal deficit as % to GDP

revised for 2010-11 to 5.1% from 5.5% and is

estimated to 4.6% 2011-12. The Equity market now is

cognizant towards the global cues and seem to be

cautiously moving upward. The corporate results also

might not be far away from the expectations. The

Elections in April and May will be another factor that

will decide the course of action for the equity market.

However, the growth expectations of 9-9.25% for

2011-12, increasing infrastructure spending, robust

government revenue collection gives a long term

positive outlook of Indian economy. Hence, inspite of

the range bound market in near future, the long term

outlook seem to be optimistic.
