Fellow cattlemen, As we enter an expansion phase in beef industry, and every pound

produced is more valuable than any time in the history of our busi-

ness, your investment in optimum genetics is more important than

ever. As we prepare for our 2014 Sale, we have proven many times

these bulls will excel in all aspects of the industry today, and bring

you a profit in any production environment.

Bulls are produced by females with function and performance in an

environment of minimal inputs that include early spring and sum-

mer grass (no creep), fall and winter residue grazing, and hay in the

months of February (minimal days), March and April. If they failed

to produce acceptable progeny in with this program, and on a time-

ly basis, they are no longer part of the program. While we realize

you cannot starve a profit out of your cowherd, we feel this minimal

input environment and management practice, combined with the

right type genetics, will allow us to always meet and most likely far

exceed your expectations of your genetic purchase. As Dr. Lalman

previously stated in Beef Magazine; it is hard to find seedstock pro-

ducers willing to put their cattle through this hardship. We definite-

ly are! And with this type of management and environment, we are

able to propagate and select the genetics which will excel in all as-

pects of the industry and country. These genetics can, and have,

previously went to and performed very well in all parts of the coun-

try.

The progressive genetics offered will increase profits at all levels of

production. That means they: calve easy and are vigorous at birth,

are efficient foragers, have high growth and conversion, are sound

and structurally correct, are fertile and maternally efficient, with

premium udders, and will produce a heavy and high quality carcass

for the packer, retailer, and consumer. If you are part of the total

production and profit chain, please join us, or contact us to arrange

purchases on sale day. Satisfaction Guaranteed!

Lienemann Cattle Co. Welcomes You

Sincerely,

Trevor L. Lienemann

We believe in our program, in our

customers, and in our combined abil-

ity to provide the best quality beef

product available in the world with

complete consumer satisfaction. We

intend to fulfill that belief through our

genetics which take low input re-

sources provided by solar energy, and convert it to the most pre-

mium protein product in the world, as well as the most satisfying

eating experience available to the consumer. This is achieved

through the continual improvement of our Angus genetics

through acquisitions, selection pressure for phenotype and geno-

type, AI & ET technology, DNA EPD enhancement, and now;

our feedlot program which allows us to measure and appraise

actual performance, efficiency, and carcass merit of our raised

animals and those produced by our bull genetics in our customer

cattle.

In 2012 we began our Calf Buy-Back and Feed Cattle Program

(our own cattle), thereby putting our dollars at risk in order to

substantiate our beliefs. Whether we are able to own your cattle

or not at the end of the bidding process, it will put more dollars in

your pocket on sale day. We have raised the value on customer

calves over $10 per hundred in auction barns in the past

years. On 100 five weight calves, that can total more than $5,000

of additional revenue per year back to you.

A very good customer once asked, how we can buy feeder cat-

tle, and generate a profit with $8.00 corn? The simple answer is,

own cattle that convert fast and efficiently, are hearty and

healthy, and have a heavy and high quality carcass that returns a

premium. Our straight-bred and Angus influenced cattle will do

that on a consistent basis. In last years fed cattle, we sold a load

of heifers that went 98% choice or prime, with 65% of our cattle

earning CAB status, and averaging premiums of $70 per

head. With individual cattle earning premiums as high as $11.85

per hundred above the choice price, and on a 923 pound carcass

for a total carcass value of $1,974.61, at 14.5 months of age.

If you have Lienetics sired cattle to sell, please let us know,

and we will do our best to participate, own, or find additional

buyers to increase your value contribution.

This leadoff bull could and should be part of any heifer development program. He combines great CE with a heavy, but soft muscle profile, big middle, and is smooth made. His first calf heifer dam is a made to be a tremendous brood cow; moderate, high capacity, easy fleshing, great disposition, beautiful udder, and high produc-tion. She is also attractive; as the pair was champion at the 2013 State Angus Show, and fertile; with a 24 egg flush last spring as a wet two.

Optimum Impact was the high selling bull at the 2009 Snake Creek Bull sale

chosen by Lienemann Cattle Co. as one of the most complete bulls marketed this

year. Optimum Impact is structurally and phenotypically ideal with a big hip,

strong top, and plenty of rib. This power bull had a birth weight of 78 lb. but

turned in weaning and yearling ratios of 111 and 110 respectively. He is also

strong for marbling and ribeye values and has a $Beef value in the top 10% of

the breed. Let this powerful stock bull have an optimum impact on your herd.

As we traveled the country to evaluate genetics, the realization of the traits, form, struc-ture, muscle, performance, carcass, and function, became clear “standouts” in the Zone 88 bull. We could not be more excited about the acceptance and use of him back on our optimum genetic base. As we look to industry expansion in the years to come, we believe Zone 88 and his progeny will play a big role in adding overall value to all Zones of the beef business. Owned with Baldridge Bros, and PineView Angus. Semen available through Bull Barn Genetics, Cattle Visions, and owners.

FALL BORN BULLS

We have began a fall cow herd to offer you some aged

bulls. The fall born bulls offered for sale are from out-

standing dams and nursed on corn stover, same as the

spring cows. They are weaned in March and turned out

on grass for the summer, and combined with the spring

born bulls for development on test. They have not

been offered for auction previously and are front end

type bulls with a ton of future. They will cover big pas-

tures and settle a large volume of females while main-

taining their condition. Their progeny will add addition-

al profit to your operation and bottom line.

YEARLING HEIFERS

The lower production or problem females are culled and sent to the feedlot, and the balance of heifers are retained as replacements or sold as a pen of 5 at NCC(none this year). All heifers are Registered Angus and sold as such. Synchronization, AI and/or natural breed-ing service, and care are also available through a prede-termined time (spring or summer) for related fees. If interested in any of these items, services, or programs, on these or your other cows or heifers, please contact Trevor to discuss.

These heifers were pulled from the replacement pen

on February 10th. If you are expecting the heavy con-

ditioned and fed up type, you will be disappointed. If

you want the type which are feminine, have longevity

and efficiency, will produce cattle like the bull offering,

and turn a profit without supplementation, you will

become a very satisfied owner. With all-time high

cattle prices now is the time to own these type of pro-

ductive Angus females which will deliver and care for

calves in the most profitable times we may ever expect

to experience.

Bred heifers on summer grass being selected for their power and performance by Alec Naber, a cattle buyer from the Nether-lands. These heifers were purchased by Hundland USA for ex-port to Kazakhstan.

Calving Ease By Sydni Lienemann District FFA Champion Prepared Speech

Most producers have had the un-

fortunate experience of going out

at night to check on calving only to find one of their

cows lying alone unable to deliver independently. This

abnormal or difficult birth is known as dystocia. Dysto-

cia can be very costly to producers. Obvious losses can

include the cow, the calf and potential revenue genera-

tion. Other, less obvious, economic losses would include

lower conception rates, an extended calving season, and

increased labor and veterinary expense. These are real

risks all cattlemen endure during calving season. Some

risks are out of our control, but there are steps we can

take to lessen the likelihood of the occurrence. Today,

I’m going to talk to you about calving ease EPDs, the

factors contributing to calving ease, what it means for

producers to focus too much on calving ease, and finally

my opinion on the issue along with that of other beef

producers.

Over the years, research has shown there are several

factors influencing dystocia. Those studies indicate ac-

tual birth weight is the major factor. Commonly beef

producers consider the Actual Birth Weight of a bull

when selecting one for purchase and use that as the only

indicator for calving ease. While there certainly is a

strong correlation between the two the term “calving

ease” can be somewhat misleading. That is, we need to

keep in mind that there are other variables involved such

as sex, cow age, pelvic area, body condition and nutri-

tion level, the breed of the sire, and the season of the

year and temperature that can also greatly influence

birth weight. These additional factors can actually de-

crease the accuracy of birth weight EPDs. For produc-

ers utilizing angus genetics, the most valuable tool for

reducing dystocia are expected progeny differences, or

EPDs. Birth Weight and Calving Ease EPDs are the two

best indicators the breed has and can be genomically

enhanced for accuracy. Birth weight, expressed in

pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth

weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

More recently the Angus Association has introduced an

EPD specific for the multiple factors of calving ease. The

calving ease direct, or CED, is a difference in percent-

age of unassisted births to assisted births in first-calf

heifers. Again, these are not perfect predictors; however,

they can certainly reduce the risk of dystocia, and are

great tools for producers when selecting sires.

But how much is too much when it comes to us-

ing calving-ease bulls? Some producers are going to

extremes in selecting minus birth weight sires. What

will happen if a breeder selects for minus birth weights

generation after generation? The results could be just as

economically damaging as calving difficulties altogeth-

er. If all you produce are low birth weight calves, they

won’t grow, or mature and perform well. That said,

you could be losing anywhere from 55 to 75 pounds of

weaning weight. At $1.80 per pound, on a herd of 250

head, you could be looking at a loss of up to $34,000!

Additionally, with continued smaller calves, they will

likely be frail boned and have a smaller skeletal struc-

ture which could lead to even bigger problems for fu-

ture generations. Then the difficulty would not be with

the bull, but with the cow. Breeding “calving ease” to

“calving ease” to “calving ease”, the likelihood of end-

ing up with an undesirable calf is much greater. One of

the biggest disadvantages of stacking calving-ease

bulls, is that cattle tend to lose muscle. This results in a

significant reduction in carcass value with a loss of in-

come. I am not saying that calving ease bulls don’t have

a place in a breeding program and are completely nec-

essary when breeding to first-calf heifers, but mature

cows can and need to be able to handle having larger

calves to optimize profit potential.

Calving Ease EPDs are a beneficial tool for pro-

ducers when making breeding selections. But, like any

other tool, they are only good when used for the right

job. For example, a screw driver is a great tool, but it’s

not too terribly helpful when you need to pound in a nail.

According to one producer, quoted in BEEF Magazine,

“the use of minimum-BW EPDs in regard to calving ease

is being oversold. This is another example of using an

EPD as a merchandising tool instead of for its intended

purpose as a selection tool.” In my opinion, a good cow

should be able to calve easily with heavier birth weights.

Therefore, when considering matings for my mature

cows, I look at weaning weight, yearling weight and car-

cass EPDs over calving ease EPDs. For my heifers, I do

emphasize the use of calving ease EPDs, because they

are the right tool for that job.

Now that I have talked about calving ease EPDs,

the factors contributing to calving ease, what it means for

producers to focus too much on calving ease, and current

opinions on the issue, I hope you take this information

into consideration when making your next breeding deci-

sions.

All natural protein supplement for heifers, brood cows, stocker cattle and horses.

SweetPro 16 protein supplement is designed for the essential fortification of heifers, brood cow, stocker cattle and goat requirements for vitamins A, D and E plus protein, calcium, phosphorus and trace elements including selenium. Daily intake will vary depending on forage quality and nutritional needs.

SweetPro blocks improve calving and clean-up. Strong-er calves pay bigger dividends. SweetPro blocks are an effective tool to improve breed-back. Organic com-plexed (chelated) minerals plus extra energy are known to improve first service conception rates. Using SweetPro blocks at weaning reduces calf weight loss by reducing weaning stress and cows consistently wean heavier, “growthy” calves without risk of dis-counts for “fat” calves.

We are proud to be your SE NE Sweet Pro Dealer

It’s the best valued forage supplement we’ve found.!

EPDs and $Values We have the following abbreviations throughout this book with regard to EPDs and actual data. $ Values are expressed in terms of real dollars for a combination of related traits. Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future proge-ny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for

the trait, plus or minus. Remember, no EPD is an absolute. It simply allows you to compare genetic differences in sires. $Value indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. $Values are reported in dollars per head, where a higher value is more favorable. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

BW Birth Weight, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the animals ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny

WW Weaning Weight, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Milk Influence of the dam, due to her milking ability, on weaning weight, expressed in pounds of calf weaned.

YW Yearling Weight, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compare to other sires

MARB Expressed as a fraction of the difference USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to others

REA Ribeye area, expressed in square inches, and a given end point.

FAT Fat thickness, expressed in inches, at a given end point.

SC Scrotal circumference, expressed in centimeters, at a year of age.

$W Is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, and includes both revenue and cost adjustments

$B Is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value

205 & 365 Day

Actual weaning and yearling weights adjusted to a com-mon number of days for proper comparison

$W

Difference in future progeny performance for prewean-ing merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjust-ments associated with differences in birth weight, wean-ing direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

CE My combined calving ease scoring based on production history and actual data, three stars are the easiest

$B is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value com-pared to progeny of other sires.
