4.0 Living in Stuttgart, Germany

4.1 Introduction to Stuttgart, Germany

Stuttgart, the city located between forests and vineyards, is an urban community in Southwest Germany. As the state capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart is not only an industrial city with world famous automobile companies and state-of-the-art science and research facilities; Stuttgart is also a cultural city that has made a name for itself through its renowned State Opera and ballet programs, and the exceptional art collections at the State Gallery and the Gallery of Stuttgart. (Source: www.stgt.com) Stuttgart's main attractions are clearly the hilly landscape, the numerous vineyards that stretch all the way to the city center, the many parks that make Stuttgart one of the greenest cities in Germany and the mineral water fountains that characterize this region as having the largest source of mineral water in Western Europe. More info: Statistics and Facts: http://www.stgt.com/stuttgart/allginfe.shtml Stuttgart’s History: http://www.stgt.com/stuttgart/historye.htm City details (Maps/Route planner /Traffic details/ Accommodation etc): http://www.stgt.com/stuttgart/homee.htm#orient

4.2 Public transport (VVS)

The VVS Transit and Tariff Association Stuttgart (Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund Stuttgart, VVS), together with its partners, is contributing significantly to maintaining and improving mobility in the metropolitan Stuttgart area. The region served comprises not only the state capital of Stuttgart, but also its four neighboring districts Böblingen, Esslingen, Ludwigsburg, and Rems-Murr-Kreis, an area of well over 1000 square miles and a population of almost 3 million. Advantages:

One ticket for all Busses and Rail (S-Bahn /U-Bahn /R-Bahn) Lines.

Short distance ticket (Kurzstrecken ticket) More details: http://jeevanhebbalu.blogspot.de/2012/03/tricks-and-tips-2.html

Ticket Plus (more info in further pages) Zone concept: VVS follows zone concept to differentiate between prices.

Ver1.0 © www.jeevanhebbalu.blogspot.com Page 10 of 26

Page 11: Life in Stuttgart

Life in Stuttgart,Germany Jeevan Hebbalu

Zone 10 & 20 are considered as Stuttgart-City region. When you buy ticket, like day tickets specify which zones you would like to travel. Normally 3day ticket given in your hotel will only be valid for Zone 10 and 20. Zone map and Tariff: http://www.vvs.de/karten-plaene/ Routeplanner: http://www.vvs.de/fahrplan/ Tickets: http://www.vvs.de/tickets/ or http://www.vvs.de/tickets/zeitticketsverbundpaesse/

4.3 Ticket Plus

One of the best option for long term visitors in Stuttgart is to avail Ticket plus. Advantages of ticket plus:

Ticket plus can be brought from one zone to entire zones, cost increases with increase in zones.

Ticket plus is transferable, means it comes with out photo, anyone can use the ticket plus.

Ticket plus holder can take one adult and child in the entire VVS network for free on weekends and holidays throughout the day (also on Dec 24th and 31st).

Ticket plus holder can take one adult and child in the registered valid VVS zone (not entire network) for free on weekdays after 19:00 hrs.

Ticket plus holder gets Bonus voucher booklet, which can be used in some places to get some discount eg: One day group ticket, TV tower, Wilhelma Zoo, Trips drill etc)

If there is delay/failure of bus/rail more than 30min, ticket plus holder can take taxi and claim up to 50€. (Note: You can claim only delays caused due to VVS, not for natural calamities or accidents)

Ver1.0 © www.jeevanhebbalu.blogspot.com Page 11 of 26

Page 12: Life in Stuttgart

Life in Stuttgart,Germany Jeevan Hebbalu

Ticket plus available only for year subscription. Payment can be done by one time or one can select Abo (monthly deduction from Bank account) subscription.

Are you relocated to new place, don’t worry you can ex-change your zone in VVS Kunden zentrum .

More info: http://www.vvs.de/tickets/zeitticketsverbundpaesse/vorteile-jahresticketplus/

Tips:

Buy ticket plus from your office (Firmen ticket) to get one month discounted price.

Some Banks extends offer on ticket plus with one month discounted price.

If your daily travel is after 09:00 in the morning, then take 9-Uhr Umwelt ticket with ticket plus. You nearly save 50% of the normal amount. Only constraint is, travelling not possible before 09:00 in weekdays.

You may not be able to cancel the ticket after 8-10 months of usage. But you can sell it your friends.
