As we embrace a new year, I want to reflect on the basics of our ministry — why we do what we do.

It all starts with the mission of Providence Life Services: “Answering the call to enhance the lives of those we serve in the name of Jesus Christ.” This mission informs everything we attempt to do and every important decision we make as an organization.

Our aim is to enhance the lives of the seniors we serve, whether those seniors are recent retirees looking for an active lifestyle, residents who need rehabilitation with us and return home, or even hospice patients who are nearing the end of their lives.

Enhancing lives can take many forms: cooks who create delicious meals, chaplains who offer comfort, and caring staff who become an extension of family. They all have the opportunity to live our mission. You, too, can play a role. Your prayers, your volunteer time, and your financial contributions to our ministry all demonstrate your commitment to serving seniors.

It’s not just the work we do, or the support you offer, that matters — it’s the “Why.” We serve in the name of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saves us. Why do we show love? Because He first loved us.

At all our communities, through all our services, we aim to offer excellent care — so that God would be pleased and those created in His image would be served.

Memory careQuestions & Answers At Providence, we assist many families dealing with dementia — and we know that it isn’t an easy road. Therefore, we strive to be as helpful, compassionate, and supportive as possible. Here are just a few questions that come up often during the journey; if you’re looking for more information about how Providence can assist your family, reach out to your local community.

What is the difference between dementia and alzheimer’s disease? Alzheimer’s Disease is a type of dementia, but not all dementia is Alzheimer’s. Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms resulting from neuro degenerative diseases — diseases that attack the brain. Dementia is characterized by losses: loss of memory, language, decision-making and problem-solving skills, and visual-spatial abilities (such as the ability to judge the distance and speed of oncoming traffic).

could my loved one have dementia? Different types of dementia present with different symptoms. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most commonly diagnosed dementia, and the subject of the most research on the topic. According the Alzheimer’s Association, common early signs of Alzheimer’s include: memory loss that disrupts daily life, difficulty completing familiar tasks, confusion with time or place, poor judgment, withdrawal from social activities, and changes in mood or personality.

A medical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s — or another disease that causes dementia — requires losses in two or more cognitive domains. A doctor can help determine if that applies to your loved one.

if my loved one is diagnosed with alzheimer’s, how do we plan for the future? Families will need to look at safe housing, and consider where is the best place for their loved one to live. They will also need to decide how long it’s safe to drive. Other things to consider include financial and healthcare implications — specifically, appointing a power of attorney while your loved one is still able to make the decision.

These are emotionally charged decisions, and often the information is best received from a physician, who can be an objective source. Family members may ask a doctor to step in, so that the family can maintain its position of emotional support – otherwise, decision making can put a strain on relationships.


how does Providence assist a client with dementia symptoms? There are many ways, but some of the most important include adjusting communication, reducing fall risks, and promoting a sense of control.

Our staff is trained to understand how dementia symptoms affect communication and alter the ways that we communicate accordingly. We know that what is factually correct does not matter; it’s the person’s feelings that matter most – what puts them at ease?

And since people with dementia are at a greater risk for falls, we train staff to anticipate what their needs would be whenever possible. There is a still a great deal of unpredictability to it, so we also do a lot of monitoring. We know we can’t eliminate falls, but we aim to reduce risks when possible.

We also simplify things, but we don’t take away choice. Our job is to help our residents maintain their own abilities and support them in areas where they are struggling.

Park Place Prepares for Phase iiIn 2016, seniors fell in love with Park Place of St.

John — the beautiful new apartments, the location

in northwest Indiana, and the community they

found with fellow residents. But the 60 apartments

quickly filled up, and there are still others

who want to move in.

So, we are compelled to build the next wing of

independent living apartments.

In God’s providence we have been blessed with a

lead donation to make this expansion possible.

That’s why it is so exciting to

break ground on Phase II of the

Park Place campus: 54 new apart-

ments, which will nearly double

the size of the community. The

new development is expected to

open in the summer of 2019.

We’ve just started to get word

out to the public about this addi-

tion, but we already have a list of

depositors — people who want to

be part of the Park Place commu-

nity, but were too late to get into

the Phase I apartments.

These depositors will enjoy a

waived community fee when they

make a reservation this summer.

They will also have the chance to

choose their cabinets and counter-

tops, and a better chance of getting

their preferred floor plan and lo-

cation in the building — the home

that fits their lifestyle best.

New residents will be able to

decide between one bedroom or

two; a spot near the elevator and

the dining room, or down the hall

for more privacy and less traffic;

a view of the sunset, or a chance

to watch the sun rise over their

balcony each morning.

Construction is set to begin this

spring, and we are very excited

to see this community expand.

On March 28, we celebrated the

groundbreaking for the new wing:

joined nearly 50 residents and

depositors for a short ceremony

and photo opportunities.

In our mission statement, “Enhancing the lives of those we serve in the name of Jesus Christ,” we have placed our trust and faith firmly in those words of assurance from John’s gospel. But all of our actions of service and ministry are powerless without prayer.

We are a ministry that believes strongly in the power of prayer. We know that by placing our needs and challenges firmly in the hands of God, He will re-spond and bless our work. For over 100 years we have been called to serve the elderly in a variety of care settings. Our effort is based on Christ’s com-mand to honor the elderly and encourage them in all their needs, including mind, body and soul. In addition to nursing and

care staff, we have a chaplain at each of our communities provid-ing spiritual support.

We call on you, our partners in Christian community, to walk alongside us in our care minis-try. We covet your prayers and ask that you include not only the residents and clients as we address their daily needs, but also our caregivers and staff as they face the challenging task of caring for the elderly.

We also ask that you pray for Providence Life Services as an organization. Providence con-ducts its ministry in a climate and environment that is very challenging. We face difficult payment and reimbursement

issues, particularly in the state- funded Medicaid program. Most of our fundraising efforts center on providing resident assistance as our clients live longer, with many exhausting their resources.

Quick guide to Senior Living ServicesSenior living has many different facets and options

— which can often be further customized to fit the

needs of each individual senior. At Providence, we

aim to offer a full spectrum of senior living options,

in order to enhance the life of each resident.

But all these options can be confusing for those

with little experience in our field — which includes

most of the families that we serve. Below, you can

find a brief guide to the different levels of care

offered by Providence.


retirement livingretirement living (also known as independent living) is for seniors who do not need medical care or assistance with activities of daily living. It’s for people who want to enjoy a rich social life and still possess a private apartment.

Our campuses are populated with seniors who are busy volunteering, traveling, staying fit, and enjoying their grandkids. Because retirement living is often on the same campus as many of our other services, residents also have peace of mind that more care is available if they ever need it.

retirement living is available at Park Place of elmhurst, Saratoga grove, victorian village, village Woods, royal Park Place, and Park Place of St. John. village Woods and victorian village also offer townhouses as an option for independent seniors.

assisted livingAssisted living is senior housing that includes some nursing care and other supportive services. People choose assisted living when they need help with daily activities like getting dressed, bathing, managing their medications, making meals, doing laundry, or other tasks. A move into assisted living requires a healthcare assessment by a professional.

There are many advantages to community living at Providence at all levels, and assisted living is no exception — three prepared meals a day, and friendly people to eat with; entertainment; housekeeping; church services; and medical help.

But the compassion that marks all our interactions is what really sets Providence memory care apart.

residents live in secured neighborhooods, designed for their safety, but we encourage as much freedom as possible. They visit with each other. They play games, paint, and help deliver mail. We work hard to make connections with them so we can offer activities that are meaningful and purposeful.

Memory care is offered at Park Place health & Wellness centers of elmhurst and St. John, victorian village, Saratoga grove, emerald Meadows, and Providence healthcare & rehabilitation center of Zeeland.

Skilled NursingA skilled nursing facility (often called a nursing home) offers the highest level of care outside a hospital. It is for seniors who are unable to care for themselves. Skilled nursing facilities are licensed by the state and inspected at least annually by surveyors from a department of Public Health. They can also offer a high level of medical care from licensed physicians and registered nurses, including wound care, Iv feedings or antibiotics, or physical therapy.

Providence has 6 locations that offer skilled nursing care. Two of them, victorian village and Park Place of St. John have “Small

Houses” on campus, which have smaller architecture, open kitchen concepts, short hallways, and serve only 10 skilled nursing residents, per house.

rehabilitationSubacute rehab is for residents who need short-term care after an injury or illness; it helps patients return to their lives. While residents are receiving therapy services from trusted professionals, they also have all the benefits of a Providence community: meals, activities, and medical professionals.

Providence communities partner with excellent providers for rehabilitation services in each of our locations throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.

home careThrough Providence at Home, PLS can offer home health care, private duty services, and hospice at a home, at a Providence community, or at another facility. Home care can help residents stay in their homes or remain at their desired level of care for longer.

Medicare-certified home health services include skilled nursing care, chronic care management, patient education, wound care, Iv antibiotics, physical therapy, and assistance with social services.

Private duty is for those who just want a little extra help. Services are chosen as needed, and include: help with bathing and dressing, medication reminders, housekeeping or meal preparation, laundry, and errands.

Hospice serves patients in need of end-of-life care. A team of Providence nurses, physicians, therapists, aides, chaplains, dietary experts, and volunteers offer both care and hope.

Internship Program Expands

The Providence Life Services internship program had small beginnings, but it has made a big difference.

It started at Trinity, with a few students who were hand-picked for a highly customized leadership development internship.

Two of those students — Mark VanderZee and Evan Geels — are now serving as managers at Providence of Palos Heights and Royal Atrium Inn, respectively. They learned all different aspects of the managerial role throughout their internships, and continued to learn after accepting full time positions.

Providence is now expanding the internship program, reaching out to other schools and including other roles in the organization.

Coordinating the program is Kyle Harkema, who serves as Providence’s liaison with colleges and is developing the intern program alongside CEO Rich Schutt.

He has reached out to schools such as Olivet Nazarene University, Prairie State College, and Purdue University Northwest. In the future, he expects that he will also connect

with students from Michigan schools, like Hope and Calvin Colleges.

He is looking for students who come from all different fields of study — including nursing, physical and occupational therapy, business, psychology, and social work. They could be working toward 2-year, 4-year, or graduate degrees. But they’ll all have one thing in common.

“My intention is to choose students for their character,” Kyle said.

The interns could be paid, or might work for college credit,

depending on their roles and their school’s requirements. Either way, their efforts would matter, both to their education and to the work of Providence.

“We want the internship to have added value for both the student and the organization,” Kyle said.

And eventually, these internships could lead to full time positions.

“We want both sides to establish if it is a good fit,” Kyle said. “But we are building these relationships and doing all we can to secure the future of the Providence workforce. We’re looking for a missional fit.”

Providence is expanding its internship program to include many more roles throughout the organization, such as nursing.


orothy Houghton’s daughter Sharon, who had worked for Providence of

Zeeland for almost a decade at the time, helped move her parents there. It was a tough decision.

“I was devastated and I really struggled with it,” Sharon says.

But she didn’t struggle long, “It turns out that it was the best thing I could have done for them. They loved it here.”

Sharon’s father passed away a couple years ago, but Dorothy still enjoys her life at Providence. As some-one who used to work in nursing, Dorothy knows what is important when it comes to healthcare.

“It meets all my needs and some besides,” Dorothy says. “And if I need something, the staff is always ea-ger to help. If they don’t know the answer, they find someone who does.”

And it isn’t just about the things she needs.

“I enjoy the little touches around here, like ice cream every night!” she says.

And Sharon has peace, knowing her parents appre-ciated her choice. She says, “I told them if I was rich, I would buy them a castle, and they said, ‘This is just like one —only smaller!’” 2

ois Pacholski has lived at Saratoga Grove for over five years. Her daughter Sue

Donahue remembers how difficult it was when the family realized her mother needed memory care.

“I looked at 10 to 12 other places. They were awful,” Sue says candidly. As a nurse, she understood how important it was to find a place that would attend to all of her mother’s needs, and she felt residential care was the safest place for her, but the search pro-cess discouraged her.

Then Sue toured Saratoga Grove. “I just loved it,” she says. Sue felt the size was small enough to ensure her mother received the right kind of care, that the bright colors gave the place a warm, positive feeling, and that a private room would help Lois transition to her new home more easily. But she also loved the different philosophy of care that she witnessed from the staff.

“I saw that the staff sits and eats with the residents. I just love that,” Sue says. “As a nurse, I know what people need, and the physical needs are just a part of it. They need to know they’re cared for.” And Sue knows her mother has that at Saratoga Grove.

“Saratoga Grove is such a special place for Mom and for the family,” Sue says. “We feel uplifted here. We feel peace.” 2

fter breaking her hip a year ago, LaVerne Pawelski’s care became too extensive for her to live alone in her home. It was a difficult decision, but her children looked around and decided Providence was the best care for

their mother. She’s glad they made that choice.

“I’m happy my children chose Providence as my new home,” she says. “Everyone has been so nice here. I can’t say enough about it.”

LaVerne, a former teacher of Shakespeare and other literature for over 40 years, enjoys the activities at Providence that help keep her mind in shape, like trivia and bingo, as well as Friday night movies and popcorn. “Our themed parties are the best!” she says. “They have so many nice activities. You’re not just sitting looking at walls! You’re meeting people and you’re busy.”

But it’s not all about fun and games. “Providence has provided me with the skilled nursing care I need. The nurses are very caring and loving. They always check up on me and ask me how I am. They thoroughly explain my medication to me, as well as any procedures that I may need.”

LaVerne knows she is cared for at Providence, and she appreciates it. “The nurses, as well as the CNAs, treat me with care, dignity, and respect.”

new star ratings have recently been released by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and Providence communities have earned high marks. The CMS five-star quality rating system evaluates three different areas — health inspections, staffing, and quality measures — and it helps families compare and evaluate nursing homes for their loved ones. It is also a factor in obtaining referrals from doctors and hospitals.

Each Providence skilled nursing community (in Palos Heights, downers Grove, zeeland, St. John, Homer Glen and Elmhurst) has earned at least a four-star overall rating. Park Place Health & Wellness Center of Elmhurst and victorian village Health & Wellness Center each claimed a five-star rating. Every community earned a five-star rating in at least one category.
