DIRECTOR’SMESSAGE

Each year when the staff compiles the Muskegon Museum of Art’s Annual Report, our heads spin a little as we look back at the twelve-month whirlwind that has flown by. It was an invigorating year, a successful year, and a year built around community.

This Annual Report covers the MMA’s fiscal year from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019. During this time, the MMA presented 19 exhibitions of a great variety, including a landmark 90th Regional Exhibition, sculpture, photography, LEGO® bricks, rock n’ roll photography, and more—all this on top of squeezing in a complete remodel of every major gallery as well as adding many significant artworks to the MMA’s permanent collection. Add in dozens of community programs, three major sold-out fundraisers, and regular family programming, it is apparent this past year was filled to the brim.

We are especially proud of how Sons: Seeing the Modern African American Male resonated with our community. With Sons, the community itself was literally on display and set the stage for the wonderful programming that accompanied this exhibition over a three-month period.

The MMA was also honored to be selected as the inaugural venue for The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realist Painters. Our partnership with Steven Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt and The Pittsburgh Foundation produced an exhibition that garnered national attention throughout the fine art world and made a positive impact on the lives of a significant community of women artists.

It is a large community of people who made possible everything the MMA accomplished this past year; this amazing creative staff; dedicated trustees who bring a high level of skill and experience governing this institution; an incredible corps of docents who breathe life into these walls; hundreds of volunteers making our programs, events, and office hum; and our sponsors, patrons, and members who support and sustain the Muskegon Museum of Art each and every year.

As we look through this annual report to the year that has been, we are also looking ahead to what is shaping up to be an exciting future. Stay tuned!

Kirk Hallman, Executive Director

I am pleased to report that our Museum of Art continues to grow,

thrive and prosper. Membership continues to grow; the collections and

exhibitions continue to attract visitors from around the world and our

annual gala to celebrate the MMA’s contribution to our cultural life was

one of the best ever!

A major event for this fiscal year was the Bennett Prize® exhibition. Ten

amazing women figurative artists were selected to exhibit in a nationwide

competition for a $50,000 honorarium and the opportunity for a solo

exhibition at the MMA in 2021. Critically acclaimed and well attended, the

exhibition attracted viewers, press and attention throughout the art world.

In addition, the MMA Replay: The Exhibition (LEGO® Bricks) during the

summer tourist season garnered record attendance.

Significant new art was added to the permanent collection including

works by artists William Glackens, Arthur B. Davies, John Sloan and Dale

Nichols. Our volunteer corps and docents continue to serve with strong

and enthusiastic commitment to telling the MMA story.

We continue to strive to improve and our capable staff led by Kirk

Hallman, Executive Director, and Catherine Mott, Assistant Director,

continue to lead and inspire. The emphasis on education continues to be

strong and the staff and trustees are especially committed to children’s

activities that support learning about art as a lifetime interest.

The Trustees are also dedicated to assuring that the Museum is operated

prudently and the financial condition of the organization continues to be

strong and growing.

As we embark on our next year, we are looking at ways to improve. The

Museum staff and Trustees are looking at ways to ensure that the MMA is

relevant for the next 100 years. We are committed to this effort in the next

fiscal year.

It has been an eventful year at the MMA and we are proudly looking

toward the future with energy and enthusiasm. We thank each and

every one of you for contributing to one of the most significant cultural

organizations in Muskegon and West Michigan.

Sincerely,

Frank Bednarek, Chair

Muskegon Museum of Art Foundation Board

EXHIBITIONS

The Muskegon Museum of Art continued to bring to its audiences an exciting and ambitious year of exhibitions, hosting 19 temporary shows, 16 of which were organized exclusively by the MMA.

SUMMER 2018The summer of 2018 was full of spectacle, with the uncanny life-like figurative sculptures of Up Close and Personal: The Ultra Realistic Sculptures of Marc Sijan; Whiskey Ridge: The Summer of ‘51, a look back at stock car racing in Muskegon; and American Icon: The Art of the Motorcycle, which featured rare vintage motorcycles in our very own Walker Galleries.

Keeping up the feeling of fun and continuing our dedication to showcasing the art of living Michigan artists, we also hosted an installation of cast wax circus peanuts and honey bears in Perchance to Dream: The Art of Michael Peoples.

Rounding out the summer was The 150th Anniversary of Edward Curtis: 150 Masterworks from The North American

Indian, in celebration of this rare and historic collection owned by the MMA.

FALL 2018Fall 2018 highlighted Michigan artists with the return of our 90th annual juried state-wide show and a career spanning exhibition of legendary Grand Rapids artist Armand Merizon in Armand Merizon: His Life and Art. After premiering at the MMA, the Merizon exhibition traveled to the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City, MI.

WINTER 2018-2019Winter was all about community, new perspectives, and art in our everyday lives. Sons: Seeing the Modern African American Male featured the portraits and stories of 47 black men from Muskegon. With images by photographer Jerry Taliaferro, the show challenged perceptions and inspired conversations about race, equality, and civil rights.

Adjacent to Sons was Ad Man: Joseph Grey II, the first ever retrospective of the career of Joseph Grey II, the earliest black man to work professionally in the ad agencies of New York City in the 1950s and 60s. Ad Man was accompanied by a catalogue on the artist’s life and art that the MMA wrote and produced.

The 13th annual Postcard Salon featured the original artwork of 381 artists, and nationally celebrated Michigan children’s writer and illustrator Patricia Polacco returned to the MMA with A+ for Educators: The Illustrations of Patricia Polacco. In Pieces: The Art of Vintage Puzzles shared with audiences the early heyday of puzzle making in America; American Spectacle: Paintings from the Manoogian Collection, organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts, revealed how nineteenth-century

American artists looked at and painted the United States; CJ Breil: Conduct Becoming explored the lives of U.S. military veterans; and Legacy: Dr. Frederick and Deborah Brown premiered new gifts to the permanent collection.

Matched with a diverse mix of programs, these 2019 winter exhibitions broke previous attendance records.

SPRING 2019Spring brought with it our annual K-12 countywide student exhibition Expressions and the launch of Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize® for Women Figurative Realist Painters. Organized by the MMA with partners The Pittsburgh Foundation and Steven Bennett and Dr. Elaine Schmidt, this nationally traveling exhibition celebrates the art of women painters and provides, to The Bennett Prize® winner, $50,000 over two years to boost her artistic career. The inaugural year of this ongoing exhibition and Prize brought the MMA once again into the national spotlight.

The traveling show Replay: The Exhibition was a celebration of comic, video game, and animated popular culture, told through paintings, photographs, mixed media, and LEGO® brick sculptures. Continuing the theme of pop culture, the exhibition Lights, Camera, Rock ‘n’ Roll: The Music Photography of Paul Jendrasiak documented the rock and roll stars that have visited West Michigan in the dynamic photos of Grand Rapids artist Paul Jendrasiak.

HIGHLIGHTED EXHIBITION PROGRAMMING

Sons: Seeing the Modern African American Male This past year we had many exhibitions that lent themselves effortlessly to an excess of thrilling programming. The most notable being Sons: Seeing the Modern African American Male, which featured over 90 portraits of African American Men from Muskegon County. The exhibition, followed by the feature length documentary Black Man by Jon Covington, boasted high programming attendance—from our free community day on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day to our first ever Open Mic night and everything in between.

Our free community day on MLK Day brought in 856 people from all over Muskegon County and featured films, crafts, tours from Muskegon High School Advanced Placement art students, and a panel discussion in the evening. A special Open Mic night welcomed spoken word artists and 157 guests for a night hosted by the local poet Kumasi Mack.

Student engagement also played a large role in the Sons exhibition educational programming. We were able to impact hundreds of students between Muskegon and Muskegon Heights Public Schools alone.

A+ for Educators: Illustrations by Patricia Polacco On the topic of students, A+ for Educators: Illustrations by Patricia Polacco was another exhibition that impacted a bevy of schools with its programming for students and teachers alike.

Patricia Polacco joined us here at the MMA in the spring for morning presentations available for K-12 students, a midday book signing, and an evening lecture. During the day of her visit, 304 students, teachers, and patrons came from all over West Michigan to hear this family-favorite author and illustrator speak.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTWe were privileged to be one of the beneficiaries of the Women’s Division Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 annual fall TRINKETS AND TREASURES event. The event, a two-day indoor yard sale, shared a portion of their profits with the MMA’s educational department. Their philanthropy granted the museum a very generous $7,000, which allowed the museum to purchase several more award winning museum-grade stools from Swedish design company Lectus. We were also able to purchase a number of children’s stools from the same company.

The stools’ ergonomic lightweight design makes them a valuable museum tool every day. From tours to personal visits, the stools add an important layer to our efforts in accessibility.

CONCERTSThe MMA presented three well-received and well-attended concerts by outstanding musical artists in newly launched MMA concert programming. We were thrilled to present Julien Labro, Kieran Kane & Rayna Gellert, and Laurence Juber, all of whom warmly shared their expansive talents and experience in the intimate setting of the MMA’s Frey Auditorium.

DOCENTSYear after year, the docents give an abundance of time, hard-work and sincerity to the Muskegon Museum of Art. This year, of course, was no different. As a group, they provided the MMA with over 2,800 hours of volunteer service. The docents continued to exceed staff expectations through leading countless student tours, engaging the public, researching artwork extensively for traveling shows, acting as advocates for the institution, planning a fabulous trip to Chicago and being readily available for a plethora of other museum-related tasks.

MMA docents are heroes in the education department, and this year we had the pleasure of welcoming five new docents to the group! This brought our docent membership to an impressive total of 50 dedicated individuals.

Museum Programming is supported, in part, through a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUPER SATURDAYS Made possible by the generous annual support of ARCONIC – Whitehall Operations, Super Saturday had yet another SUPER fiscal year with 3,400+ attendees! A long-standing family favorite for locals and visitors, Super Saturday serves the public by providing a safe space for all families to engage with world class art in the galleries and participate in family friendly art-making in the classroom.

EXPRESSIONS This year marked our 37th annual Expressions student art exhibition. The exhibition, made possible by the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District, showcased the work of 224 students from 16 school districts (11 public, 3 private and 2 charter schools).

And this year we saw an awe-worthy attendance at both the middle/high school and elementary receptions for the students. With the middle and high school reception bringing in a total of 552 individuals and the elementary reception bringing another 310, we were elated to share in the child-fueled joy in the gallery space.

AESTHETIC EDUCATIONFounded by the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, Aesthetic Education is an inquiry-based learning system that helps students develop their capacities in critical thinking. Through participatory activities, reflections, and deep engagements students are able to fully experience works of art while drawing meaningful connections.

After hosting Muskegon’s first Aesthetic Education training with the MAISD and West Michigan Symphony for teachers from 11+ schools and artists in 2018, we were able to immediately start building and hosting experiences for the trainees’ students. The MMA’s experiences revolved around two exhibitions: FantasMenagerie: The Sculptures of Nat Rosales and A+ for Educators: Illustrations by Patricia Polacco.

We found the Aesthetic Education experiences to be remarkably successful with the students, and the teachers reported vast improvements on engagement in and outside of the experience venue. Alongside our area partners, we have just completed a second kick-off session for the trainees with plans to expand the group in 2020.

Dropped in today...Everything about the

COLLECTION REPORT

ACQUISITIONSThe fiscal year 2018-19 brought the continued growth of our internationally recognized permanent collection. In collaboration with our Collections Committee, we made numerous important purchases and accepted several significant gifts.

GiftsBy gift, we acquired photography from Michigan artists Jennifer Green and Dorothy “Dot” Thompson, both of which were featured in our 2018 summer exhibitions.

An anonymous donor presented us with a stunning piece of carved optical glass by Czech artists David Suchopárek and Ingrid Račková, continuing a legacy of studio glass at the MMA.

Substantial gifts of art came to us through the estates of Dr. Frederick and Deborah Brown and Robert “Paul” & Marjorie McConaughy. These gifts included art by Tunis Ponsen, Dale Chihuly, James Tissot, and Manuel Robbe.

Sherman Poppen donated an early vessel by David Huang; Judith and Bruce Clark two abstract paintings by Midwest artist John Himmelfarb; M. Dawn Berry a print by Marion Greenwood; Joseph Grey II an early, award winning watercolor; and from Steven Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt a painting by Mary Henderson, one of the ten finalists featured in our Bennett Prize® exhibition.

PurchasesThrough art fund proceeds and financial gifts the museum was also able to purchase major new artworks that complement the best of our existing collection, expanding on the stories we are able to tell.

Continuing an interest in Regionalist painting we added a stunning winter farm scene by Dale Nichols, Footsteps in the Snow. Its vibrant blue sky was an instant attention getter in the newly remodeled Bettye Clark Cannon Gallery.

Through auction, we were able to secure multiple paintings by early-twentieth-century American artists, acquiring for the collection:

Driobe and Her Handmaidens by Arthur Davies

Nude and Windsor Chair by John Sloan

Woman with Watch by William Glackens

A Midsummer Night, Cambridge by Edward Potthast

Bathers at Quiberville by Theodore Earl Butler

The paintings by Davies, Sloan, and Glackens illustrate a transformational time in American art in the beginning of the 1900s and greatly complement our other paintings by members of “The Eight” and their circle. The Potthast and Butler are prime examples of American Impressionist painting, one of our earliest areas of collecting.

Looking to the future while supporting living artists, we also purchased pieces showcased in our 2018-2019 exhibitions, including Conduct Becoming: Survey #3 and #4 by C.J. Breil; Hamp’s Band by Joseph Grey II; and Babe in the Woods by Dorielle Caimi.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

Festival of TreesIn what has become a local tradition, a small army of volunteers transform our galleries into a festive holiday display and host special events and activities during the last weeks in November. The 14th annual Festival’s fun steampunk theme carried through trees, wreaths, and other holiday décor created by local designers and sponsored by individuals and organizations in the community. Visitors bid on the trees, décor items, and donated gift baskets during the Festival’s on-going silent auction.

6th On Tap & UncorkedOur sixth annual ON TAP event on April 12, 2019 included beer and wine tasting and food pairings. The event was a sold-out success, continuing to introduce a fresh audience to the MMA. Setting the event in the MMA galleries makes ON TAP stand apart from other craft artisanal beverage and food tasting events.

107th Anniversary Gala Gala-Con, the 107th Anniversary Gala held on June 8, 2019, was inspired by pop culture and the LEGO® brick sculptures featured in the summer Replay exhibition. The colors of the evening popped and as the theme of the event reminded us—“Everything is Awesome!” The Gala, another sold-out event, is one of the year’s biggest parties and a significant fundraiser.

SECOND CENTURY LEGACY SOCIETY

Second Century Legacy Society Members

The Muskegon Museum of Art began with a simple planned gift of money from Charles Hackley to the Board of Education to buy art. His gift, which he designated in his will, was an expendable trust of $150,000 to buy “pictures of the best kind” and was both unexpected and significant. Indeed, it was that very gift that inspired the building and establishment of the Museum.

The MMA is the embodiment of the inspiration and the reality that a planned gift can have.

In 2007, the MMA established the Second Century Legacy Society to encourage our supporters to consider a planned gift through a bequest of at least $25,000 to one of our endowed funds or our art funds, a direct lifetime gift of $25,000 or more, or a gift of art worth $25,000 or more.

A gift of inspiration is no small matter. Legacy giving is the simplest and most effective way to give and can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Simply call us regarding your desire, and we will make arrangements accordingly. For more information on becoming a member of the MMA Legacy Society, contact Kirk Hallman, Executive Director, at 231.720.2573.
