LIFESAVING REPORT 2018-2019

Creating a Lifesaving Nation

We invest in animal welfare organizations that make the most lifesaving impact possible. With more than $230 million invested and 6.5M animals adopted, we partner with organizations who are creating lifesaving communities across the nation.

AREAS OF IMPACT The Petco Foundation invests in organizations that have the most lifesaving impact. Through a decision-model designed to evaluate and assess organizations alongside their peers, we empower those who are the most productive and effective, and who work with a relentless determination to succeed.

Disaster Relief and Recovery Helping Heroes Pet Cancer Research & Treatment Innovation

We support organizations with funds and supplies when disaster

strikes to help save animal lives and aid in recovery.

We support the impact that service, therapy and working pet

heroes bring to their communities.

We invest in finding a cure and providing treatment for those

in need.

We support innovation that advances change and promotes new approaches to lifesaving.

It’s been a great year for saving lives! As we celebrate the Petco Foundation’s 20th anniversary, I am so proud to be part of a nationwide network of people who are passionate about creating a better world for animals.

Together with more than 4,000 animal welfare partner organizations, we are building lifesaving communities across the U.S. I believe that assessing the accountability for saving lives is a core differentiator for the Petco Foundation. The Petco Foundation analyzes the operational metrics of our animal welfare partners alongside their peers to determine the organizations that are the most productive and effective at saving lives. Under-resourced organizations like Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi or Palm Valley Animal Shelter in Edinburg, TX work tirelessly with relentless determination to save animal lives, and they are succeeding!

That’s why our donors’ support is so essential! There are people and organizations across the country who are innovating and saving lives every single day—it’s our goal to find these organizations and to empower them to make big things happen for animals. We’ve done just that for 20 years, and we look forward to continuing to build a lifesaving nation as we look toward our next 20!

All for love,

Susanne KogutPresidentPetco Foundation

INVESTING TO SAVE ANIMAL LIVES

The Petco Foundation supports the incredible organizations that train and support animals whose service improves the lives of hundreds of thousands of people each and every day.

The Foundation places a special emphasis on organizations which obtain pets from shelters and transform them into Helping Heroes. Some of the amazing animal heroes served by these investments include:

Stryker, an adopted service dog trained by K9s for Warriors, who helps veteran, Jennifer, overcome symptoms of PTSD.

Jake, a former shelter dog, who was trained by the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation as a search and rescue canine.

Xeli, an adopted cat that was certified as a therapy pet and now helps calm travelers at the Denver International Airport.

HELPING HEROES The Petco Foundation has given more than $12 million to support the heroic work of service, therapy and working animals.

DELIVERING TO SHELTER PETS This spring more than 21,000 adopters joined together to celebrate the love that adopting a shelter pet brings to your life. Together they created the world’s largest virtual valentine for shelter pets and the people who love them.

The shelter valentine was delivered to organizations across the country, culminating in surprise grant investment deliveries to 16 organizations and $14 million invested nationwide to save animal lives across the country!

Thousands of adopters from across the United States shared personal accounts of how their adopted pets changed their lives in the sixth annual Holiday Wishes campaign.

The Petco Foundation selected 51 winning stories and delivered $755,000 in grant awards to adoption organizations including one $100,000 grand prize, and a series of finalist awards ranging from $5,000 to $50,000.

The 2018 winning stories range from funny to inspiring to heartwarming. A few may even evoke a tear, but every one is a unique example of how the love of a pet can change everything. Annagrace’s grand prize winning story won $100,000 for Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue in Florida. In her story, Annagrace describes how Auggie helped her heal after a shooting at her high school.

Holiday Wishes award celebrations took place across the country, in tandem with an online People’s Choice Contest which gave the public the opportunity to vote for their favorite story to award even more lifesaving funds.
