Four decades ago, Donna and Donald Lowry and a small group of devoted parents banded together with tremendous courage and a vision to challenge the status quo. At that time, each found their children with developmental disabilities without specialized care options as they themselves approached adulthood.

These seven parents risked much to invent, create, design and build a full spectrum of services that were almost non-existent at the time, but necessary to support the needs of their children and others with developmental disabilities throughout their adult lives.

With the establishment in 1978 of a day treatment program serving 32 people in Brockport, Lifetime Assistance, Inc. was born. In 1979, 21 Holley Street in Brockport became Lifetime’s first community residence as well as the first community residence for adults in western Monroe County. Two years later LAICO Industries was founded, offering employment services to 70 people.

Step By Step – A Remarkable JourneyLifetime Assistance has reached many milestones; each one has created a monumental step towards the extraordinary agency it has become 40 years later.

Today, Lifetime Assistance serves over 1,800 people at over 70 residential, day service and community sites throughout western New York. With 1,500 staff members and hundreds of volunteers, some of whom are the original trailblazers of this pioneering enterprise, Lifetime continues to assure that each person supported is given every opportunity to succeed and reach their greatest potential.

Donna and Don Lowry selflessly worked to make Lifetime Assistance happen. Our son Kevin’s confidence, social skills, work ethic and ultimately his happiness to a great extent are attributable

to the groundwork laid by Donna and Don, and we will always be grateful to them. – Peter Head

04 CelebrationAnniversary

We have accomplished so much together and we’re here to celebrate each of you, our wonderfully caring, inclusive Lifetime family, for your part in building an extraordinary, life affirming, and in fact, world changing community. A spirited Lifetime community built upon principles of respect, trust, kindness and creativity, on daring to dream, driven by hard work and a commitment to social change, and advantaged by the kindness and grace of our wonderfully caring community. – James Branciforte, President & CEO, during the agency's 40th anniversary celebration September 28th.

Over 800 dedicated employees, families, board members and people supported by Lifetime Assistance enjoyed a night of celebration at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. It was an historical night filled with stories of days gone by, comradery, and one awe-inspiring standing ovation for four of the original founding family members who attended the event. Ms. Donna Lowry, one of the original pioneers, was honored with the Lifetime Legacy Award for her continued service, steadfast advocacy and leadership. Tears of pride and overwhelming love filled the room as Donna humbly accepted the award.

The Lifetime Inspiration Award was presented to Ann Costello, honoring Tom Golisano and the Golisano Foundation, for decades of service to the community and individuals with developmental disabilities. Mr. Branciforte eloquently expressed his genuine gratitude: “While it seems obvious that Tom’s business expertise is the driver behind his astronomical successes, I’d submit to you, that while this is absolutely 100% true, there’s another side of the story. Tom’s extraordinarily kind heart; a heart as big as this planet, touching lives every single day. Tom has taken on the demanding and formidable tasks of challenging

and changing society, so all people are treated with dignity in everyday life.” Ann graciously accepted the award, smiling as she reminisced about the early years of the Foundation and her longtime friendship with Mr. Branciforte.

The evening roared on with hours of laughter and dancing to the musical talents of the band Shine. It was a night

40 years in the making that took almost one year of planning by an incredible team of staff, led by Director of Day Services Amy Mitchell. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Page 10: Lifetimes 40 · 8/31/2018  · Saturday Night Fever were box office hits, and the Susan B. Anthony dollar was minted. In Brockport, NY, area residents and officials were beaming with

It was the year the first cell phone was introduced. Grease and Saturday Night Fever were box office hits, and the Susan B. Anthony dollar was minted. In Brockport, NY, area residents and officials were beaming with pride as doors opened to the first supports and services for people with developmental disabilities in western Monroe County.

The year was 1978 and it marked new beginnings for many. Forty years later, Lifetime Assistance, Inc., has left footprints on the hearts of thousands of individuals, their families, employees and the community at large. Many faces have walked the halls of Lifetime, some have come into our lives and quickly gone, others have stayed for a while and impacted our lives significantly.

Either way, we smile a little brighter each day knowing their lives have been and are being positively impacted by this incredible agency.

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go, others stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same." - Flavia Weedn

Happy Anniversary Lifetime Assistance!

Our family’s involvement with Lifetime Assistance started over 35 years ago when I worked as the manager of the South Ave. group home. This was certainly the most memorable work I had ever experienced. Assuring that each person was treated with respect and they had a quality, comfortable life, was one of the most rewarding jobs in the world!

I was amazed to learn that five of the original ten individuals that lived in the South Avenue home when I worked there in the 80’s still live there! That’s a great example of how Lifetime provides stability and comfort to the men and women they serve. In the 90’s, our family needed help for two of our own children with developmental disabilities. Lifetime was a natural choice because we knew they would be very well cared for and supported. Jim has been at Lifetime's Clarkson Apartments since it opened in 1994 and Ben has received services since 1997. Most recently he moved into Frances Apartments, Lifetime’s new inclusive housing complex. Lifetime Assistance has given our family so much care over the years. We are happy to be able to give back by joining the Lifetime Society. – Paul & Carol Taillie

If you are interested in joining the Lifetime Society and leaving a legacy gift to commemorate your commitment to individuals with developmental disabilities through Lifetime Assistance, please contact the Lifetime Assistance Foundation at (585) 784-5002 or [email protected].

Kevin Head’s hard work has paid off in a big way. But Kevin, a 2018 recipient of the William B. Joslin Outstanding Performance Award sponsored by the New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID), says he is far from resting on his laurels for winning this prestigious statewide award.

A Job Well Done!

“I look forward to coming to work (at LAICO Industries) every day,” Kevin said. “I want to keep working hard, and I like earning a paycheck."

Observed each October, NDEAM marks the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates the public about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents. Now in its 15th year, NYSID’s Joslin award, celebrated during NDEAM, recognizes those who have overcome individual challenges to experience meaningful employment and personal growth.

“The Joslin Award is a monumental honor, and deserving employees, such as Kevin, highlight the importance of NDEAM to celebrate the skills and talents of workers with disabilities,” said James Branciforte, President and CEO of Lifetime Assistance. “We remain committed to partnering with our accepting and inclusive community, and to the continued spirit of disability employment awareness, and the belief that workers of all abilities can succeed, and that every individual can make a difference.”

Kevin was one of several employees at at Lifetime's LAICO Industries and Classified Scanning and Shredding Services to be recognized.

Among thosehonored:• Carolyn Fose, Martha Wood and Larry Shannon, covering 35,

30 and 25 years respectively as employees at LAICO Industries;

• John Himmelsbach, Hector Morales and Jessica Weiland, who have graduated from LAICO Industries and now are gainfully employed at other private businesses in the greater Rochester area;

• Choma Costello and Nate Ainsworth, who together received the LAICO Outstanding Service Award in recognition and appreciation for their efforts in promoting LAI’s overall mission to support people.

Lifetime Assistance celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with multiple honors to employees.

Kara Cannarozzo says she was stunned. “I don’t feel that I have done anything that any of the other nurses at Lifetime Assistance would not do,” Kara said. But when Kara was named the recipient of the 2018 Joanne Mills Award, she admitted she was both shocked and surprised.

“Receiving the Joanne Mills Award is a true honor,” Kara said. “I am truly blessed to work with such a wonderful, supportive group of nurses in such a rewarding field. Thank you to everyone who nominated me for the Joanne Mills Award.”

Joanne, likewise, would be pleased. Throughout her 24 years as a Registered Nurse and Associate Director with Lifetime Assistance, Joanne Mills dedicated her career to creating a culture of caring by constantly reminding her peers: “It’s all about the people we serve.”

Joanne was a difference maker, and Debra Argus, Lifetime’s Director of Health Services, agrees that Kara personifies everything Joanne stood for.

Joanne also delighted in making homemade cheesecake cookies for various events at the agency she loved. See recipe to the right.

Shocked, surprised and well deserved. Introducing this year’s Joanne Mills Award winner.

It was all part of a year-end college project in which the students were required to create unique working prototypes of products to support Dorthea and Ricky in their daily routines.

The students spent the first semester doing the research. Once their initial assessments and recommendations were accepted by faculty, they used the second semester to construct and complete their recommended solutions.

“I love it,” said Dorthea regarding the new portable pull-out drawer affixed to the arm of her wheelchair. “I don’t have to ask anyone for help.

It’s all right here. I am so happy!” The students also fabricated a new swinging arm to assist Dorthea in retrieving her handbag on the back of her wheelchair.

Ricky needed help reaching and manually lifting the left foot rest on his wheelchair. He also wanted a tabletop device to place on the arms of his chair.

Ricky was given a table-top device, specially made to fit his wheelchair, and a hand-held mechanism to release his left footrest.

“The device helps Ricky to be more independent so that he can transfer easier to different surfaces,” said Jennifer Lowell, Coordinator of Occupational Therapy Services at Lifetime Assistance.

The assistive devices fashioned by the students are one-of-a-kind innovations, Jennifer said. Upon project completion, the U of R students generously shared their blueprints and manufacturing methods with Lifetime so their creations may also benefit future users.

The Home on

For one day they streamed out across numerousLifetime Assistance sites: attorneys, accountants, teachers, engineers, administrative assistants, call center representatives, health care professionals, manufacturing and assembly line workers all focusing on a variety of spruce-it-up, clean-it-up, paint-it-up, rake-it-up projects.

Nearly 500 volunteers representing more than two dozen companies converged to provide various improvement tasks at numerous Lifetime Assistance sites over the past several months. Mary Kay Whalen, Administrative Assistant for

Lifetime’s Transportation Department, estimates that volunteers collectively contributed over 4,000 hours at Lifetime’s 70 plus locations.

“The staff at the residence were so appreciative and campaigned to have us go back, which we will,” said Rob Malyk, Software Test Engineer for Paychex Enterprise Business Solutions.

“Worthwhile? Wow!” exclaimed Robert Rehberg, Manufacturing and Logistics Technician at eAperion Solutions.

“At the Idlewood home, the residents look forward to the Day of Caring. Kevin, Mike, Jamie, John and Boyd reserved the date and planned their schedules so they could work side-by-side with our team.”

“Over the years, we have bonded with them and we are all ‘friends,’” Robert said. “We love to help them with planned projects and watch them take pride in their home. At the end of the day we all have a sense of accomplishment.”

TEAM Graduates!Shajadia, Ryan and Caroline donned their caps and gowns, walked the aisle and proudly displayed their certificates as the latest graduates of the Lifetime Assistance/Monroe Community College TEAM (Transitional Employment Academic Model) two-year study program.

facebook.com/lifetimeassistance

“All of these graduates have every right to be proud,” said Jay Harwood, Lifetime’s TEAM Program Manager. “It’s a challenging program but it certainly can be a rewarding one.”

The two-year certificate program helps support students’ academic, social and daily living skills, as well as provide future employment opportunities. Eligible students receive supports and services from Lifetime Assistance while spending time interacting with other students on a college campus and during their internships. All four students have a bright future ahead

of them. Ryan proudly completed all of his course requirements, including four internships and hopes to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Shajadia says she is looking forward to a health care career in an assisted living environment where she can provide support and comfort to seniors.

Caroline hopes her coursework on nutrition and healthy living will help her pursue a career in the food services industry. Rachel (not pictured) has many interests, but her passion is with animals and she hopes to one day own her own pet store.
