11WIRE ROPE GRIPS

ApplicationsWire rope grips are used on wire rope eye-loop connections or complete-loop, end-to-end connections wheresocketing or splicing is not feasible when a non-permanent or temporary joint is required.

Instructions For UseCautions And WarningsThe wire rope grip should be fitted to the wire rope as shown schematically in the figures.The bridge of the grip should invariably be fitted on the working part of the rope and the U-bolt on the ropetail or dead end of the rope.Turn back enough wire rope length so that the required minimum number of grips can be installedaccording to the instructions below.1) The first grip must be placed one saddle width from the turned back rope tail or dead end of the rope.See figure 1.Tighten the nuts to the specified torque. *

2) The second wire rope grip must be placed immediately against the thimble but nevertheless in such aposition that the correct tightening of the grip does not damage the outer wires of the rope.See figure 2.Turn on the nuts firmly but not yet to the specified torque. *

3) All other grips must be placed between the first and second grip in such a way that they are separated byat least one clear grip width from each other.See figure 3.

4) Apply light tension to the rope and tighten all nuts to the specified torque.** Refer to torque tables listed on pages 13 & 14.


12 WIRE ROPE GRIPS

The efficiency of a wire rope termination made with wire rope grips will depend upon their correctplacement on the ropes and the care and skill in the fitting and tightening of the grips.With inadequately tightened nuts or with an insufficient number of wire rope grips the rope end may drawthrough the grips at a very early stage in loading.A number of factors can adversely affect the tightness of grips upon ropes, such as:

-the nut may be tight on the thread, yet not tight against the bridge.-contamination of the thread by, for example, dirt and corrosion products, may prevent the correct tightening of the nut.

Forged wire rope grips provide greater bearing surface and more consistent strength than malleable cast irongrips.Malleable cast iron grips should be used only in non-critical applications.For critical applications only forged wire rope grips are recommended.Wire rope grips generally to DIN 1142 and commercial wire rope grips must not be used as:

-hoist ropes in mines.-rope drives for cranes in steel works and rolling mills.-permanent fastening of ropes in other rope drives.-rope terminations for load suspension devices in the operation of lifting appliances except in the cases of lifting tackles where these are produced for a special application and are not reused.

Never use any grip for directly connecting two straight lengths of wire rope.

Instructions for use.Cautions and warnings.

General.Commercial shackles are not to be used for lifting purposes.

Should extreme circumstances or shockloading be applicable, this must be taken into account onselecting the product to be used.

The Working Load Limit (WLL) should be applied in a straight pull and overloads must not be made.

Side-loading should be avoided as the products are not designed for this purpose. If side-loading is unavoid-able refer to the following:

It is required that the shackles be regularly inspected and that such inspection should take place as a mini-mum in accordance with the standards given in the country and all relevant requirements of the RiggingCode of Practice. This is neccessary, because the products in use may be affected by wear, misuse or over-loading with resulting deformation and alteration of steel structure.

Safe use of shackles.

Shackles should be inspected before use to ensure that:- the body of the shackle and pin are both identifiable as being of the same quality;- all markings are readable;- the pin is of the correct type;- the threads of the pin and the body are undamaged;- the body and the pin are not distorted or unduly worn;- the body and pin are free from nicks, gouges and cracks.

Ensure that the pin is correctly screwed into the shackle eye, i.e. tighten finger tight, then lock using a smalltommy bar or suitable tool so that the collar of the pin is fully seated on the shackle eye.Ensure that the pin is of the correct length so that it penetrates the full depth of the screwed eye and allowsthe collar of the pin to bed on the surface of the shackle eye.

Incorrect seating of the pin may be due to a bent pin, too tight fitting thread or misalignment of pin holes.Do not use the shackle under these circumstances, but refer the matter to a competent person.

Never replace a shackle pin with a bolt, other than one designed for the purpose, as it may not be suitable forthe loads imposed.

It is important in the case of shackles fitted with a bolt, nut and split cotter pin that the length of the plainportion of the bolt is such that the nut will jam on the inner end of the thread or on the eyes of the shackle,and that the rivet on the bolt is cross drilled for a split cotter pin.Never use a bolt type shackle in operation without using a split cotter pin.

Usage.

Select the correct type of shackle for a particular application.Shackles should be fitted to the load in a manner that allows the shackle body to take the load in a true linealong its centre-line; and not in such a way that bending loads are induced, other than those for which theshackle is designed.

When using shackles in conjunction with multi-leg slings, due consideration should be given to the effect ofthe angle between the legs of the sling. As the angle increases so does the load in the sling leg and conse-quently in any shackle attached to that leg.

To avoid eccentric loading of the shackle a loose spacer may be used on either end of the shackle pin or ashackle with a smaller jaw width should be used.Do not reduce the width between the shackle jaws by welding washers or spacers to the inside faces of theeyes or by closing the jaws, as this will have an adverse affect on the mechanical properties of the shackle.

When a shackle is used to secure the top block of a set of rope blocks the load on this shackle is increased bythe value of the hoisting effort.

Avoid applications where due to movement (e.g. of the load or rope) the shackle pin can rotate and possiblybe unscrewed.

Finished shackles may not be heat treated because this may affect the Working Load Limit and the materialstructure.

Shackles in use should be subject to thorough examination by a competent person at least every 6 months.

Hints For Safe Lifting

1. Place sling so the load is correctly balanced.

2. Never overload a sling.

3. Inspect sling for damage before each use.

4. Do not use sling if there is any sign of cut webbing, snagging, heat or chemicaldamage, excessive wear, damaged seams, any other defects or presence of grit,abrasive materials or other deleterious matter.

5. Do not use sling if I.D. tag is removed.

6. Protect sling webbing from sharp edges of load. Use protective sleeves.

7. Slings should be stored away from sunlight or any heat source.

8. Consult with manufacturer’s recommendations before immersing a sling in achemical solution.

9. Do not tie knots in sling webbing.

10. Never attempt to repair a damaged sling. Always refer sling to a certifiedmanufacturer.

Available as a set of 4 with a WLL of 56 tonnes. Two types are availablefor either top lifting or bottom side lifting.MKIIa - Self locking lugs for top lifting of containers. Suitable forsplicing direct to 4 vertical slings.The lug engages in the top corner aperture and when rotated through90° a lock ring drops and firmly secures the lug.These lugs are used for lifting with a spreader frame and do not projectover the container.MKV a - These lugs are designed to eliminate the dangerous use ofstandard hooks and are handed left and right. Two Leg Slings Three & Four Leg Slings

The Working Load Limits (WLL) listed in the tableabove are the maximum weights which slings aredesigned to sustain in General Lifting Service ac-cording to the standard uniform load method ofrating.In exceptionally hazardous conditions or in anyother circumstances which might indicate a need fora WLL lower than the designed figure, the degree ofhazard should be assessed by a competent personand the working load limit adjusted accordingly. TheWLL, which should be marked on the sling itself oron a securely fixed metal tag, must not be exceededin any circumstances.THE LOAD IMPOSED ON A SLING LEG IN-CREASES AS THE ANGLE OF THE LEG FROMTHE VERTICAL INCREASES. Account is taken ofthis fact when calculating working load limits. Forexample, a 10mm two-leg sling to be used at anangle of 45º from the vertical (90º included angle)

will have a WLL 1.4 times that of a single leg slingwhen used vertically, and not two times the singleleg. That same WLL applies to all angles from 0º -45º (0º - 90º included angle). Where there is likely tobe a need to use a sling at an angle greater than 45ºfrom the vertical, the sling should have additionalmarkings showing the reduced WLL applying atangles from 45º to 60º from the vertical (includedangles from 90º to 120º)

ADVICE FOR SAFE USE OF LIFTING CHAINASSEMBLIES.

“DO’S”1. Check the condition of the slings before each load.2. Check that the chain legs are not twisted.3. Check that the load is on the centre of the hook and not on the tip.

“DON’TS”1. Do not carry out self-repairs and weldings of the chains and fittings.2. Do not use the slings loaded over the maximum permissible load.3. Do not load with convergence angle over 120°.4. Do not shock load.5. Do not shorten the chains by knotting them.6. Do not paint or galvanize the chains.7. Do not use chains in pickling or acid baths.8. Do not submit the chains to heat treatment.9. Do not use chain and accessories outside of temperature range

between -40°C and +200°C.

“WHEN T O REPLACE YOUR SLING”1. When the contact point between the links has a diameter reduction

over 20%.2. When the chain has reached the ultimate elongation in respect to the

initial dimension.3. When the marks on the chain are illegible.4. When parts of the accessories have deformations (e.g. opening of the

mouth of the accessories over 10%).

This information is provided to assist in the selection of chain lasing sets.It is important that chains are used strictly as outlined in the Truck Loading Code.Certain grab hooks (without supporting wings) and grab hook twitches derate lashing capacity by 25% andthis has been taken into account in the ratings provided below.Lashing capacities listed are half minimum breaking load as outlined in Standard AS/NZS4344.

Instructions For Use & CareLever Type Load BindersHook loadbinder to chain so you can operate it while standing on the ground.Position load binder so it’s handle can be pulled downward to tighten chain(see photo). Be aware of ice, snow, rain, oil, etc. that can affect yourfooting. Make certain your footing is secure.

We specifically recommend AGAINST the use of a handle extender (cheaterpipe). If sufficient leverage cannot be obtained using the lever type load binderby itself, a ratchet type binder should be used.

If the above recommendation is disregarded and a cheater pipe is used, it must closely fit the handle andmust slide down the handle until the handle projections are contacted. The pipe should be secured to thehandle, for example by a pin, so that the pipe cannot fly off the handle if you lose control and let go.The increased leverage, by using a cheater pipe, can cause deformation and failure of the chain andloadbinder.

During and after tightening chain, check load binder handle position. Be sure it is in the locked position andthat it’s bottom side touches the chain link.

Chain tension may decrease due to load shifting during transport. To be sure the load binder remains inproper position: Secure handle to chain by wrapping the loose end of chain around the handle and the tightchain or tie handle to chain with soft wire.

When releasing load binder, remember there is a great deal of energy in the stretched chain. This will causethe load binder handle to move very quickly with great force when it is unlatched. Move handle with cau-tion. It may whip - keep body clear.

Never use a cheater pipe or handle extender to release handle. Use a steel bar and pry under the handleand stay out of the path of the handle as it moves upward.

If you release the handle by hand, use an open hand under the handle and push upward. Do not close yourhand around the handle. Always keep yourself out of the path of the moving handle.

Ratchet Type Load Binders

Position ratchet binder so it can be operated from the ground.

Make sure your footing is secure.

Maintenance of All Load Binders

Routinely check load binders for wear, bending, cracks, nicks or gouges. If bending or cracks are present -Do not use the load binder.

Routinely lubricate pivot and swivel points of lever binders and pawl part and screw threads of ratchetbinders to extend product life and reduce friction wear.

Instructions For Care and Use of Your Cookes Ratchet Tiedown Restraint

To ensure continued safety and an extended service life from your tiedown assembly, please read and adherestrictly to the following information:

These recommendations apply, in the main, to the use of webbing ratchet tiedown assemblies in road trans-port and whilst some of the more general recommendations apply throughout the field of use of such prod-ucts, it is important to realise that in some applications different requirements may apply.

• Ensure that sufficient tiedowns are used and that they are in good condition and strong enough tosecure the load.

• Where anti-chafing sleeves are supplied, ensure these are placed where edges or corners of the loadcome in contact with the webbing.

• Do not under any circumstances tie knots in the webbing lashings.

• Do not increase the tension on the webbing by the use of levers or bars.

• Do not allow modifications or repairs to be carried out by anybody other than a certified manufacturer.

• Make use of anchorage points which are at least equal in strength to the webbing.

• Ensure that the sum of the lashing capacity of the total tiedowns used is at least equivalent to the massof the load and that the vehicle has at least one tiedown every 1.5 metres along the length of the load.

NOTE: Complex loads are likely to require additional tiedowns.

• Ensure the vehicle’s load space and the condition of it’s load platform are suitable and adequate for thetype and size of the load.

• Always ensure that the front of the load is abutted against the headboard of the vehicle or some otherfixed restraint, taking care not to overload any of the axles.

• Check the security of the load:(a) before moving off,(b) before entering public roads,(c) at regular intervals throughout the journey,(d) on any occasion when unusual road conditions may have altered the tension of the webbing.(e) following removal of any items from, or addition of any items to the load during the journey.

Repairs.

To ensure your tiedown assembly maintains it’s ultimate strength, do not allow repairs to be carried out bynon-certified manufacturers.

Repairs will only be undertaken where it is considered that following such repairs, the tiedownassembly is deemed to provide continued safety.

The Occupation and Safety Actmakes it the responsibility of the employer to

provide safe lifting equipment for his employee.It is therefore important to have your equipment tested on a regular basis depending on how

frequently it is used or the environmental conditions it operates in! It is recommended that this shouldnot exceed 12 months.

Recently the Courts have imposed heavy fines on firms who haveused unsafe equipment resulting in injury or death!

Cookes can offer a testing service at 11 branchesthroughout New Zealand. There is also a mobile servicefor testing at your own premises in Auckland andChristchurch.

Our other 3 branches can carry out visual checks andarrange for proof loading at the nearest Cookes test bedif required. Lifting equipment registers can be suppliedfree of charge.

After testing, Test Certificates are issued in accordancewith the relevant standard.
